“Nice place to stay”
Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

The hotel is 10-20 minutes walk to the beach and major shopping. There is an ABC store at almost next building for your needs, drinks etc... The rooms are renovated that includes flat TV. My room had shower and was large enough to have a huge twin couch with pretty Hawaiian floral design, lots of storage, huge built-in area to put your luggage up, safe deposit box, coffee machine, empty refrigerator and an office corner. I had a corner location, Room #801 at 8th floor but not an attractive view. The internet connection was with a fee but was flawless and fast. The staff was great, the front desk was always helpful with great positive attitude to assist as well as the Bell staff. The room service dining offered some really good items that included fish and salads. The hallways are not air-conditioned but the room air condition was sufficient. The elevators were very efficient.

I traveled yo Honolulu on business for four days at the end of April and was looking for a convenient hotel that would continue earning points as an elite level Hilton Honors member. The Doubletree was much less expensive than the nearby Hilton Hawaiian Village, so I gave it a try.

At check-in I was "upgraded to a suite" (room 720), given "free internet access" and 2 bottles of water as a Hilton elite Traveler. Interestingly, the was a a suite adapted for disabled customers (e.g., wheelchair accessible, walk in shower with grab bars and bench seating). I did not need or request such accommodations, but appreciated the suite upgrade with on exception. The closet hanger bars were available only at wheelchair height making having of linger garments a challenge.

The staff were generally helpful and friendly, but in a laid-back Hawaiian fashion. For example, when I went to check out two of us different customers) waited for the only available clerk as she chatted of the phone for a good 2-3 minutes. In addition I could not get the WiFi internet link to work consistently. After two sets of complaints about that I learned (on the evening of my final day) that my room had poor WiFi reception because it was adjacent to the elevator shaft which somehow compromised the signal. They offered to move me to another room or give me a $10 dinner coupon, but it was 8 pm and I was scheduled to leave the next morning at 6 am. It would have helped more if they'd addressed this issue when i first raised it 48 hours earlier.

The room was generally clean, but with a few non-roach insects. They did a planned fumigation on my second day.

I was at business meetings all day x3, so I only really used the room to sleep and shower. The desk was nice, but not helpful without the internet access. The bed was comfortable, but the thermostat was in the living room of the suite and would not go below 68, keeping the bedroom at 72-74 most of the time (a bit too warm for my tastes).

The maid service was okay but borderline inattentive on detail (e.g., did not refill empty tissue dispenser or empty water from ice bucket).

It's a good enough alternative to the flagship Hilton across the street, but does have lestt than stellar attributes.

Room Tip: If you plan to use the internet do not accept a room near the elevator (such as 720). Do not accept...

I like DoubleTree, and in some cities they are even better than the local Hilton.....not here. Here in Waikiki the poor DoubleTree sits two blocks from his grand big brother Hilton Hawaiian Village and is totaly ignored. The place looks like a dump compared, and guests don't enjoy any of the privledges across the street. This is just plain bad company policy, because there is no reason DoubleTree guests should not enjoy other Hilton amenties that are so close, especially considering how BAD the pool facilities are at the DoubleTree. Neverthelesss, still has a Hilton bed and basic room, so at least that was good.

I've been staying here since February and at my corporate rate, it is definitely worth it and allows me to stay within the state contractor budget. Hilton honors members with of gold or diamond status receive free wireless in rooms, but the breakfast is just a standard continental breakfast but you have to pay nine dollars for the upgrade to a warm breakfast. The thermostats are restricted to a low temperature of 69 degrees and occasionally the cleaning staff will turn it up to 72 degrees so you could be greeted by a nice warm room when returning home from work. This has even occurred when the cleaning staff had no reason to enter my room because I had the do not disturb up and had requested no room service that day. This is inexcusable and the management should inform their staff to never enter a room when the occupant has the expected right to privacy.

Aloha Dastuge,

Mahalo for staying with us and for your candid response about your stay with us. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. Regarding our cleaning staff entering the room after you posted up the "do not disturb" sign, I'll pass your concerns to our Housekeeping Manager and the appropriate departments to ensure the privacy of our guests. Thank you for bringing that up to our attention.

We hope that you choose to stay with us again during your next visit to the islands.

Be wary of the "cheap" rooms here - they have tiny bathrooms w/ showers, no fan, and air conditioners locked down at too warm a temperature. We stayed in a room right across from the elevators and ice maker and the room was very loud (I'd guess that other rooms wouldn't have this problem, but these are the reduced rate rooms). The air conditioner was locked at a temperature that did not cool the room, I can only imagine how awful it would be in the hotter months (we where there in April).

Aloha Colorado5678,

Mahalo for your candid post regarding your stay with us earlier this month. We recently went through a 16 million dollar renovation that modernized our rooms to optimize the guest space, including the bathroom space. Thank you for posting about your concerns regarding our air conditioning in the guest room. Our A/C system saves energy by turning off when the patio doors or guest room doors are not fully closed and left open. I do hope you were able to reach out to our engineering team if the A/C was not functioning correctly, as they're always ready to jump in to assist our guests. Once again, thank you for your feedback regarding our guest rooms, as they'll be used to find ways to improve in our services and amenities. We hope that you'll give us another chance to show you those improvements.

Mahalo,
