“Good for the Budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2010

Stayed here in March 2010, with my husband, kids 9 & 13, and grandma too. We picked the Sand Villa due to its proximity to the beach and shopping, as well as the price. A bonus for us, was that the hotel included continental breakfast, and had a hot tub. Not many hotels we researched in Waikiki had those 2 ammenities. We found the Sand Villa to be well used, but also clean and very friendly. It was great for us to get rooms that had 3 single beds (no kids fighting about sleeping arrangements) and the toilet/bidet was an interesting addition to the washroom. The bathroom has a dispenser for liquid soap and shampoo in the bathtub/shower area. I brought my own conditioner and was glad I did. Our room had a little fridge, coffeemaker and tv. The coffee is free only the first day, and then you can buy the packets at the front desk if you choose. We knew this in advance and packed some filters and coffee so we could enjoy coffee whenever we wanted. We used the valet parking which was easy and billed to our room at the end of our stay. This cost 15.75 per day. Our car rental was from Dollar, and we got a great rate by using the Entertainment book. Free breakfast was great to get us started in the morning, and saved on our overall budget. Two blocks to the beach was convenient, although the pool and hot tub area of the hotel was very nice and secluded with tropical foliage throughout, making it a nice retreat at the end of a busy day. Shopping and restaurants were only a block away. A nice feature of the hotel was free internet access in the hospitality room, and free use of the room at the end of the day when our flight left late in the evening. It had internet access so we could check our flight status, and a small bath with shower to freshen up. We asked for some pool towels before we checked out so we could enjoy the beach/pool area one last time before our flight. The hotel is located right on the corner of the Ali Wai Canal, and so there is a bit of noise from the traffic, and the emergecy vehicle station (the odd ambulance every day) but still less than if you stay right on Kuhio. Bottom line, we would stay again.

If you're a snob, this is not the place for you..But if you want to feel like family and really enjoy yourself..this is the place to be..The bar and restaraunt were awesome, price and quality was unbelievable...bedding was a liitle hard for me,(at home I sleep on a 6 inch feather bed)but if we went back we would go over to macys and get a featherbed for the stay and ship it home on our last day..THE VIEW AND OUR ROOM WAS AWESOME!!!Cant't wait to see Dee and the others...lol

I went here for my honeymoon and the tubs were not clean. The water smelled like urine and i didn't like the wall headboard. The elevators were broken. So there was only one elevator and our last night some woman was walking through downtown screaming and crying in the streets. (No fault of the hotel). Other than the dirty bathroom it was an okay stay but my honeymoon would have been better if it was a luxury resort. I will say this though, the pool was great and the staff was friendly!

Very clean and well maintained (decor ready for an update though) - Beds really comfy, shower good, good views front and back, Staff helpful and efficient (asked for more pillows - they took less than 5 mins to respond)..wee bit noisy, but this is the price of a central location. The electric toilet with seat warmer and built in bidet hilarious....I want one! Breakfast (Toast/jam/juice/coffee/fruit/yoghurt) kept the hunger at bay till dinnertime. Happy hour and bar good fun and good value (good steak). The in-house travel advisor is to be taken with a pinch of salt...scary..... was insistant on telling us where we should go.....I wanted an 'round the island trip' just to get my head around things quickly...'Oh! we don't' do those...and you don't want to take The Bus......' she raved on a bit...with the result I booked a trip on the street (well you gotta gamble sometimes) through a company called Explore Hawaii - $24 all day from 8.30 - 5.30 with Donny the Driver - fantastic Value also booked a BOB (Breathable Observation Bubble) -my only crit was the value of the Hanauma Bay trip - $18.99 - should have got 'TheBus' and rented snorkelling gear there - cheaper and would have given us more time on this Brill Beach - If you want the turtles they hide round the back of the rocks where the current's stronger, so hire a life vest first --- I'm saving to go back it was so great - and we only saw 5 flies the whole time - Amazing!

This hotel is a great value and is an easy walk to just about anything that Waikiki has to offer if you are willing to walk a few minutes to save hundreds of dollars. It is rated as two and a half stars on most travel websites which I think is fair. It really would be nicer with just a little touching up: some paint and some carpet cleaning, especially in the guest rooms and hallways. I don't want to imply that it was dirty, because the rooms were given plenty of attention by housekeeping and the staff took good care of the place, ownership just needs to give a little attention to detail. The pool area is small but well kept and beautiful. The wiki breakfast is exactly what they advertise and had toast, canned pineapple, donuts, croissants, coffee and juice. It was plenty if you don't need a huge breakfast each day. The best part of the place is the Sand Bar downstairs, reasonably priced with good food and drinks (Cocktails for $3 at happy hour and they were NOT watered down!). The bar staff is awesome and make you truly feel welcome as a visitor. They not only take care of guests but draw a regular local group that are equally friendly. The hotel staff were friendly and will help you in any way the can but they don't necessarily go out of their way to make sure you are ok, you have to ask for assistance. Overall, this is a hotel for folks that are independent travelers and can figure things out for themselves and are working with a budget. You can't come into it thinking you are going to be staying at the some ritzy Waikiki hotel. I would not hesitate to stay again because of the great deals to be found here.

Hello - just spent seven nights at this hotel. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Rooms are ok for the price you pay, a lot of the hotels in Waikiki are very old and dated so no surprise there. Would skip the breakfast, but meals in the bar/restaurant are good and price is reasonable. I thought the pool was huge and a highlight of the property. Would stay at this hotel again if got a cheap price.
