“THE MOST INCREDIBLE PLACE TO GET MARRIED- THE HOTEL & BANQUET STAFF ARE AMAZING!”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

My wife and I were recently married at Moana Surfrider and had an amazing experience! Moana Surfrider is our favorite hotel in Waikiki- it is the oldest hotel with very nice ambiance due to it's location, architecture, decor and staff.

We were married at the Diamond Terrace at sunset. It was so beautiful! The wedding site and the weather always seem to be ideal at this location.

One of the most memorable experiences of our wedding was how incredible the staff was at Moana Surfrider. The Banquet manager Toni Takata and her assistant Miju Kim did an unbelievable job and were especially helpful on our wedding day. We were so happy with how accommodating they were to us .

The Banquet staff was led by Bob and a host of the most polite & professional waiters you could ask for.

We feel very fortunate to have had such a wonderful experience at Moana Surfrider and would recommend this to anyone considering getting married in Hawaii.

Room Tip: The Honeymoon Suite has a beautiful view of Diamond Head and the beaches of Waikiki

The Moana Surfrider is a truly lovely hotel that retains the magic of the old Hawaii yet provides all the mod cons one expects from a top 21st Century hotel in the SPG chain. Staff are extraordinarily polite & efficient yet with the aloha spirit regardless of where in the world they originate. The hotel is directly on Waikiki Beach & as the oldest hotel there it has prime beachfront along with bar & restaurant overlooking the beach. The pool is OK with lots of lounge chairs although a bit small for a hotel its size. The rooms are lovely, spacious & well-appointed with good size bathroom & walk-in closet. It fronts on the prime stretch of Kalakaua Ave in the heart of Waikiki so you can walk everywhere. We were there just before Christmas & its decorations were so lovely that many tourists stopped in to take photos by the decorated tree. I have stayed here a # of times over the years & it is now at its best due to relatively recent renovations. Definitely a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view with large windows

My husband and I chose the Moana surf rider for the second part of our honeymoon. We were so disappointed with the hotel. Now we are not usually ones to complain but this was an exception. On arrival at the hotel we were understandably told our room was not ready yet. So we were offered the facilities of the hotels freshening up rooms which had showers and towels etc. when we walked into the room it was dirty. There was empty wine bottles and used towels in the bathroom. It had been used and not been cleaned before we used it. We then returned to the lobby to let them know and we're offered another room which we declined. We then went to breakfast at the beach house restaurant at the moana surf rider. The cutlery had dried egg on it and the white coffee mugs had brown stains in them. We eventually received the keys to our room. We booked an ocean view king room. To our shock upon entering the room it was literally the size of the king bed. Very small and the only view of the ocean was from a tiny windows hat could not be accessed without moving furniture. This window faced North.  So basically if you moved into the far right hand side of the room you could get a glimpse of the ocean. It was very dishonest to advertise this room as an ocean view. It certainly was not. As this was our honeymoon and we were staying 8 nights we did not think we would be able to live in such confined spaces. We spoke to reception who were quite helpful. We were moved  to a bigger room with a small balcony overlooking diamond head. It was still in the historic part of the hotel. It had been renovated, however the room had an overwhelming stench. It was like the strong disinfectant of a hospital. It was literally burning our nostrils. After some tears we again ventured to the reception and were helped out by the manager Stephen. He was very helpful and understanding. He told us that there has been a number of issues regarding the smell in the historic wing. He said that there was a room available in the newer tower wing in two days. In the mean time he offered us an actual ocean front king room that was the oldest part of the building. This was nice, had an amazing view and did not smell. However was very old and had dated decor. The bathroom was dirty around the taps and shower full of grime. We must say that the staff at the hotel were extremely helpful when we were upset with our room. When we were moved to the tower room we were shocked to see the difference in the quality of the rooms. And the small price difference. I can only imagine the guests staying in the historical part of the hotel would be disgusted  if they knew how much nicer the tower wing is in comparison to the diamond wing and historical wing. And the price is not greatly different. And finally on our last night we were woken up at 3 am when there was a legitimate fire in the hotel. The flames damaged the first 3 floors of the exterior of the hotel and the smoke was very thick on the level we were staying. We were evacuated and not able to return to our room for 2 hours. When we checked out the next day not a word nor apology was even offered by the hotel staff. Considering we were exposed to such a dangerous terrifying and very smokey wake up call. All in all a very stressful experience. We would not stay at the Moana Surf-rider again.

We have been to Waikiki a few times and recently stayed at the Westin Moana Surfider and enjoyed our stay. Probably our best experience was hiring the deck airs and umbrellas by the beach and sipping piña coladas whilst watching the sunset. Breakfast on the veranda is a must and is excellent but be prepared to wait when they are busy. A facial in the spa was so relaxing, I kept falling asleep. The hotel is very central with a beachside location. Although the room was spacious, the windows in our room in the Bayan wing were small. The gym was good. The pool is small, so if you have kids who spend lots of time in the pool and you are looking for a luxury hotel, the Sheraton is better.

...do they really need to charge an extra $35 fee for a beach chair and umbrella? The room rates are high enough that a chair on the beach should be included. Not to mention that you also pay a $25 resort fee each day of your stay. That said, the public areas of the hotel are beautiful, as is its beachfront location. Rooms are small, but well appointed. Pool is small and nothing special. Bring your no-limit credit card if you plan to eat and drink here.

Room Tip: Rooms in the newer towers are larger than those in the historic building. If you can afford it, go f...

Really nice hotel. Great bar staff. Clean rooms. I was in my brothers room to watch a little of the game and the door was propped open, security saw this and made sure things were ok. Definitely would stay there again.

By fine, old hotel, I don't mean outdated or not well maintained. I stayed here for 2 nights as a layover on my way to the south Pacific. I think it is the second oldest hotel in Waikiki, but you wouldn't know it if not for some of the architecture. The public areas are beautiful and well maintained, and open out onto the pool area, bars, restaurants, etc. I had a fine corner room that was large, well maintained, my only complaint is no balcony, but lots of windows with ocean views. The location is very convenient, on the main drag in Waikiki. Small refrigerators in the rooms, and ABC stores everywhere for drinks, snacks, etc.
