This is the funky hotel that you would see in a movie thinking “wow, if only there was a place like that in real life”, well, it does exist. I have stayed a couple of times at this hotel and I have enjoyed every second of it. First of all, this is not a hotel – this is a very pleasant way of experience Hawaii in a way you will never come close to if staying at one of the other hotels on Waikiki. The staff is very relaxed and helpful, they are basically more like friends. The location is absolutely perfect if you want to explore Waikiki (300 m to the beach) and the surroundings. Just about everything is within walking distance (or a short cab ride). The standard of the rooms are ok and you will find all the necessary things you need for a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Before buying any beach equipment check what is available for lending in the hotel reception. Our children borrowed lots of stuff from the hotel instead of buying and leaving.

This hotel may not be for everyone, but it was perfect for me. It is not posh but it is warm and genuine and reminiscent of what I think Waikiki was 20-30 years ago before all the development. There is no breakfast or restaurant, there is a small pool, but what there is, however, is charm and a sense of belonging. There are people I met there that have been coming for over 35 years. There was a neighborhood man at the reception desk who had stopped by to chat with fresh cheese bread he had just made, and he offered me, a complete stranger, a piece of it. The room had a kitchen with microwave, sink, stove and refrigerator and the Food Pantry supermarket is just down Kuhio street about 3-4 blocks so you can save some money and cook in your room. The place is well-worn but clean and a block from Waikiki beach and the buses on Kuhio Street. If you are travelers on a budget, look no further for an affordable roof over your head in a central location. Mahalo to Royal Grove.

Room Tip: Ask for something on a higher floor with a kitchen (category 2 room) for $70 per night.

This is a hotel with alot of heart, lost in time....The location is ideal (2 blocks from the beach and close to all amenities). I stayed 2 months and felt very safe and secure here. The Monday jams were awesome! The pot luck holiday meals were ex! Previous guests have left air mattresses, floaties, swim goggles, wake boards, etc. and they are all available to borrow. The rooms facing the pool are less noisy than the ones facing the front of the building as the early morning traffic can be noisy. It is reasonably priced and you won't be spending much time in your hotel room as you will be out experiencing Waikiki Beach and it is Paradise!!!!!

Room Tip: Book a room facing the pool as they are quieter. Higher floors are less noisy.

We'll be back! It's quite dated, yes, but very well located with clean, spacious, well equipped rooms and friendly and obliging staff. There is great eating on the same block, buses to everywhere 100m away and its 200m to the beach. We loved Royal Grove.

The hotel is a bright pink building and kinda sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the Hilton, Monarch and the other 5 star properties (what does this tell you – hell yeah, prime location!). Hop, skip & jump and you are at the beach. Centrally located and close to all the shops, farmers market, restaurants etc. The hotel is also right next door to the bus stop, you have a car rental agency right in front of the hotel, and a lane away from the pickup point for all day tour buses. What more could you ask for?? The room itself was quite comfy with all the amenities you need for your stay. The property could do with some refurbishing but yet manages to retain that quaint charm. We were glad we stayed at the Royal Grove as it met our needs. As for the staff – true Aloha spirit!

Room Tip: Higher floors have less traffic noise and you can also catch a glimpse of the beach.
