Queen Kapiolani Hotel
Ranked #60 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Reviewed October 15, 2011

Someone once told me, that when choosing a destination, choose wisely. Hawaii, my destination of choice, and Diamond Head as my point of interest, i searched thoroughly for a hotel that fits my budget, and so, I came across Queen Kapiolani Hotel, with an added bonus, the Zoo, located directly across the street. The rooms are perfectly sized, and the bathrooms are cleaned and well stocked. Each room offers magnificent views of either Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach and or the City . The pool has lots of views to offer as well. The hotel lobby, which holds a portrait of the Queen, offers friendly staff and a very helpful 24 hour concierge.

With Diamond Head views and walking distance to the beach and shops, Queen Kapiolani is the place to stay. I believe this hotel served its purpose. I would definitely stay here again.

The Kapiolani is one of those hotels that oozes a history of grandeur but has a distinctly run-down feel.

The downsides:

Everything seemed to be a little broken or in need of maintenance, the escalators spent more time operating as stairways than escalators as they were shutdown, the lifts had a tendancy to randomly take you on tours of every floor except the one you wanted to visit and the in-room aircon require liberal thumping on an hourly basis to stop rattling annoyingly which meant leaving it on overnight wasn't an option. The room felt a bit tired and had an odd feeling of being unclean which I wasn't able to put my finger on, possibly caused by the window nets being a greyer shade of grey.

The upsides:

Fantastic location. This hotel is at the quieter end of Waikiki beach which is great, you're about 50 yards from the beach itself, with a starbucks and a great surfbar called lulu's for breakfast overlooking the beach so you can watch the surfers. Being at the quieter end of the beach isn't as much of an issue as you might perceive its a nice 10-15 minute walk along the beachfront into the main town area with the larger hotels and shops if you're that way inclined.

We were 2 couples so had 2 rooms both of which were of the same sea-view grade. The difference between the rooms was huge. While one faced across the zoo and out onto Diamond Head with a great sea view, the other was at the back of the hotel with one of those "stand on tip-toes and you can see the sea" views and an annoying early morning wake up call by the refuse lorries loading and unloading. So, you're in pot-luck territory as to the quality of your rooms.

Summary:

If you're the sort of person who goes to a hotel on holiday and wants to spend a lot of time in the hotel and room then this isn't the place for you, the hotel is just a little tired to spend all day in it. However, if you want a crash-pad in a great location then this might be just the place you're looking for.

We stayed in May, had 2 rooms with diamond head and ocean views for 4 people.

The hotel lobby, pool, and hallways all looked newly renovated. The rooms had been started but were a bit of a mish mash of furnishings and felt a bit old/unclean.

Now, being in Waikiki, we weren't there to spend an entire week in the room. If you are a person who sits in the room all day, I would recommend somewhere else.

We loved the pool deck, spent alot of time there. We also loved the view from our balcony and enjoyed beverages every night on our balcony before we went for dinner. It would be nice if they got rid of the cheap plastic disposable cups and used nice glasses instead.
I have never seen that before - looks especially odd when they are next to the new 42 inch LCD TV.

We had friends join us and stay in a city view room for 1 night, it was not nearly as nice as the diamondhead view. You looked straight into another hotel/apartment building, the room felt like an aquarium.

The noises from the zoo in the morning were entertaining!

Room Tip: diamond head or ocean view

The price is about right but the rooms are really old and the hotel needs serious renovation.
There is also no real lobby. Customer Service is very limited.
Next to zoo, beach and starbucks and lulu's.

Not a bad price for something two blocks from the beach with a great view of Diamond Head and the ocean. Pay for the upgraded view, it is worth it.

The first room I was offered had bedbugs; we were moved to another room, which was smaller than the room we had booked, and were offered no apology or further compensation. The rooms are shabby and rundown. I think there are probably other options for this price in Honolulu that would have nicer rooms, but the location of the Queen Kapiolani is pretty good - just a 2 minute walk to the beach. Ultimately, though, I'd stay elsewhere, and check your bed before you get in it!

Aloha! I sincerely apologize for your experience with bed bugs here at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel.

While our housekeeping personnel are trained to detect the presence of bed bugs when they change the bed linen after every checkout, they are not always able to observe every instance due to an oversight, the nocturnal nature of the bed bugs, or the fact that the bed bugs are unknowingly brought in by the arriving guests on their clothing or luggage. You are probably aware of the reports of bed bugs in not only the hotels but also in the high end retail shops in New York. Unfortunately, the bed bugs can be found everywhere (don't let anyone tell you otherwise) and it is a good idea to check not only your room but your luggage, restaurant seat, rent a car, airline seat, etc. as a precaution. However, here is no need to be paranoid as fortunately, on a positive note, bed bug reports represent less than 1/2 of 1 percent of the number of rooms we have occupied in our hotel and in over 50% of those reports our pest control technician reported that he did not find any activity after inspecting the room.

I am not sure why your second room was smaller than your first room unless you were initially assigned a room that was on the end of the building as those rooms are slighly larger than the majority of our rooms.

Again, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced and hope that you enjoyed your vacation to Hawaii.
Aloha and mahalo, Russell Chun General Manager
