The OUTRIGGER REEF ON THE BEACH was superb in every, from the accommodations to the service, to the attitude of the staff who could not have been more helpful.
The children loved it and, as regular and seasoned travellers, we were very impressed. I would recommend Oahu as the PARADISE it is said to be and the OUTRIGGER as the place to stay for value for money, quality and comfort. The hotel is on the beach, close to all the pleasures waikiki has to offer. We will be back very soon. The sunshine certainly beats a British summer.

The hotel put us in a room right by the elevators so of course we heard the elevators going up and down all night long - Service at the bar very good - the Shore Side restaurant breakfast buffet very good and the idea of cooking your own meat at night at the same restaurant was interesting - The marriage renewal ceremony on Friday was nice - but not well planned - If we go back to Hawaii we probably won't stay there or in Wakikik at all - too commercial

We recently returned from a week's stay in Oahu for our honeymoon. When I chose the Outrigger Reef, I had read all the reviews and knew what to expect. Yes, the bathrooms are tiny. Yes, there are nicer hotels. But I'll tell you this - I highly doubt there is a better hotel in Honolulu for the money.

We stayed in an ocean front room - probably one of the best views from a hotel lanai in Honolulu (the hotel sits on the beach, about 30 feet away from the water). The room came with a king bed, a couch, two chairs and a table, plus chairs and a small table on the lanai. The room itself was not overly spectacular, but if you plan to spend most of your time in your hotel room, you probably shouldn't be going to Hawaii!

The beach in front of the hotel - which is NOT Waikiki, as other reviewers have mistakenly stated - doesn't get too crowded (like Waikiki), but there are better beaches on the island to relax at (try the North Shore). It really empties out when the sun goes down, which gives you a chance to take a nice, quiet beach stroll or to sit on your lanai and listen to the ocean.

As stated by other reviewers, the staff is very friendly. The timeshare people can be annoying, but easily avoided. The valets work hard at their jobs, but occasionally it can take a while to get your car (when there's only three of them trying to get cars for a lobby full of people, the long wait is understandable). The restaurants are good, but not great.

Overall, if you're going to Oahu to try and take in as much as the island has to offer, this is a great place to stay. A lot of things are within walking distance, and it's a nice place to return to after a day on the beach or seeing the sites. If you plan to spend most of your time in your room, I'd suggest staying somewhere else.

We spent a week of our honeymoon here and the hotel was faultless. Spotlessly clean at all times, the staff were all friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

There's a good selection of shops on the premises, selling clothing, food and drink and a whole lot more, and three restaurants. Our favourite was The Shore Bird, overlooking Waikiki Beach, where you're given raw pieces of meat or fish to take over and cook yourself on their barbecue.

Rooms were compact but very functional, with a safe and fridge in the room, although the bathroom was a little small. The lifts are very slow, but then again, this is Hawaii! We concluded that the lifts ran on Hawaiian time!

The hotel is in a good location, between the market place area to the east and the Ala Moana shopping area to the west.

I'd stay at the Outrigger Reef again in a heartbeat and can recommend it to anybody.

After booking, then reading the reviews we tried to find another hotel. We couldn't because their was a big convention in town. We stayed the last week in July. I loved this hotel! We had booked a city view room for the price, but were upgraded to a partial ocean view overlooking the ocean and the pool. Room was terrific. We kept the lanai (sp.?) doors open the entire time we were in the room even at night. The only negative thing was there was only a shower no bathtub. Bathroom was more than okay.

Things to think about:
We were told everything was sooo expensive. Not so. Stay away from expensive places. We mostly ate what the locals ate and for great prices. The bakery in the bottom of the hotel across the street was wonderful. You can eat till your stuffed for under $3. "Lunch plates" could be found everywhere for under $6. Zippy's fast food restaurent was local, cheap, and great. If you want a truly memorable meal and have an extra $100 try The Ocean House in the hotel and eat sitting by the beach. You will not be sorry. Drinks are expensive most places. Across the street at the Broilerhouse, Mai-Tai's are under $2, though.
if you have a car, Kailua and Lanikae (sp.?) are beautiful places to go swim and not crowded. Buzz' Steakhouse is another memorable, but expensive place to eat across from Kailua Beach. Go at lunch. You really should have a reservation for dinner if you don't want to wait. Try the Artichoke for an appetizer and the Key Lime Pie with Guava Sauce for dessert. Terrific!! We did lots of "touristy" things, but the one you don't want to miss out on is the Polynesian Culteral Center. Definitely worth the time. If I could only do one thing, (besides the beaches) that would be it. The hotel "beach" was fine, but the sand in the water was rocky. You can walk two minutes in either direction and the water is fine. We spent time and thoroughly enjoyed the beach around the hotel. It wasn't that crowded except for Saturday and Sunday. Other beaches around the island were more private and the sand was of a better quality. Other things not to miss are the Internatial Market Bazaar. Cheap gifts. For even cheaper gifts (but the sme ones) try the Swap Meet at the Aloha Stadium. Good quality t-shirts $2 are everywhere. You might want to buy a BIG quality rolling suitcase to take back all your stuff in for only $10! Whatever you wanted to take back you could fin it at the Staium. All in all we had a great vacation! About the hotel, it was a great place to come back to. One hint. Ask for the highest floor possible. We were on the 16th out of 17. It's easier to catch an elevator that's empty and not have to try to push your way into a crowded one.

We arrived at the Outrigger exhausted from travel to board the tiny and SLOW elevators. It took two trips for my party to even get upstairs. We went into our rooms to find them to be small and musty. I had booked three rooms for 8 people and was dissapointed in the size and humidity in the room. The front desk spent a lot of time with me standing in the lobby trying to find larger rooms without success. Food in the resaturant was expensive and not very good.

I can not say enough nice things about our family's week stay. Our 8th floor room in the Ocean tower had a lovely view of the beach and Diamond Head right from the balcony. The facility is absolutely TOPS! But what made all the difference for us was how EVERY SINGLE staff member made us feel like they REALLY wanted us to come back again and that they were TRULY happy that we were staying there. THEY MADE US FEEL GREAT while we enjoyed PARADISE! We never wanted to leave the resort! Thanks for making our vacation!
