We booked this hotel thru AAA, first leg of our 2-island honeymoon. (see my Fairmont Maui review) We stayed from May 21 to May 26. Though we've not done too much inside the hotel, let me tell u why I gave a 5 Star. Was our first time in Hawaii so we did a lot of the tourist things, out most of the day. First of all, we booked a City View room, cuz I was betting on that they would give us an Upgrade knowing we are honeymooners(I read here that they upgrade sometimes). Sure enough, at check in, he said, oh you should never book a CityView room for your honeymoon, let me upgrade you to a partial ocean view. (we also got 2 boxes of chocolate from hotel) So we stayed on 9th floor, balcony faces pool, and partial ocean view. Room was fair size, enough for a king bed and a sofa. It is right on the beach, once you step out of the hotel from the back, you are on the sand. This is awesome cuz there are a lot of hotels in Waikiki not exactly on the beach. The hotel has a park next to it so it doesnt feel like its in between all the tall buildings. Also location was awesome. McDonalds right across the street(a small 2lane 1way) A Starbucks being built at the hotel on the lobby. A short block away from the main street, Kalakaua, where there's Cheesecake Factory, high end stores Coach, Tods, A/X, also International Market Place. There's plenty to shop/eat on Kalakaua. Just so convenient. We walked around there 3 nites. As others mentioned, this hotel has a nice/big airy lobby. A lot of other hotels have a small lobby(most of Ohana hotels). If you have to ship your souvenier back home, the Post Office is right around the corner. So I gave a 5 Star for the upgrade, the most awesome location and size, and generally good/clean room. I highly recommend it.

We stayed from 23 May to 29th. Great hotel. We had a partial ocean view on the 16th floor.
Didn't think the walls were too bad tho u could here the water works in next rooms bathroom but never heard anything more personal that that!
Rooms were a decent size, clean tho maybe a little tired looking. Restaurants & bars were all ok. GREAT value in the hotel stores. Better prices than outside sometimes!
Downside. Reception do not take the time to explain how to work the elevators. There is a trick to it! ALtho generally speaking reception & staff were all good, EVELYN needs a little work. She wasnt welcoming at all when we checked in. Made us feel like we were putting her out. Our request for somewhere to freshen up on our arrvival ( We had to wait 3.5 hours for our room since check in isn't till 3 pm) was met with a look of pure inconvenience from her.
Despite her, I wouldnt hesistate to stay there again. Great place to stay.

For booking 3 months in advance we got a very small room...was dissapointed as my mother worked this hotel back in the 50's and my fathers picture hangs in the lobby (original beach boys) I came back to show a friend that's never been there before, but everything else was great except the sales pitch about Time Share..we're there for relaxation, not listen to sales....all in all the hotel and beach was great and it brought back memories of my uncles canoe and playing music on the beach at night! would stay again, but have a bigger room.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights on my 21st birthday on April 19th-22nd. They gave us a free upgrade which overlooked the pool. They also gave us conjoing rooms for us and our friends. We loved this location. Close to all the stores (and bars!) and restaurants. Nice pool with a couple of restaurants right by the pool. Convient stores right inside the lobby great for getting water, snacks, towels etc. The beach is nice right out front b/c it's not too crowded. We ate at the restaurant on the beach and listened to great live hawaiian music... it was a wonderful hotel for a great price. We will definetly go again! ( P.S. Don't be scared by others negative reviews it is a nice hotel and worth it)

We had a lovely suite in this great hotel for one month. The hotel was always clean and fresh while allowing the ocean breeze to flow throughout.
The open air restaurant, lobby and pool were a great places to relax. The entire staff was courteous and housekeeping was always efficient. We would definately stay at this hotel again if we were to visit Oahu again. We never felt so comfortable away from home.

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef on our honeymoon 16th - 22nd April 2004. We had booked through a package, so did not have a choice of rooms, and when checking in we were told the hotel was full and no upgrades were available. The room was small and cramped, with a view of apartments right opposite our balcony which meant we had to close the curtains for privacy, making the room dark. Could do with some modernisation, especially the bathroom. The hotel itself was very nice - an open lobby and nice pool area. We ate at the Ocean House restaurant, which was fantastic - great food, a table next to the beach, and a view of the sunset. The hotel is centrally located, and is right on the beach. From what we saw of the rooms with Ocean and pool views, they seemed to be more spacious and brighter. I would recommend this hotel, but make sure you pay the extra for a better room.

I would not recommend this hotel. Dirty, thin walls, very small rooms, run down, smelly.

Also far from Waikiki. Only have valet parking.

Stay at the Hawaii Prince.
