“Great Place to Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

We spent a 6 nights at the hotel in September 2013. What a great experience. The staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is casual but still has an elegance about it. Our room was a partial ocean view, which from past experience means you stand on the toilet to see the water, in this hotel we had a full view of the ocean from our balcony. We would recommend this hotel to a family or anyone looking for a great place to stay in Honolulu. They also do what we think was a great value buffet breakfast for $14.95 per person, then gave us a voucher each day for one person 1/2 price the next day

Great location, room OK, staff friendly, a bit too expensive. Hotel is a bit outdated, had vouchers for breakfast (9 days) only Ocean House was Just OK, you could not get a normal breakfast. In The Shorebird you couldn't even get toast or full cream milk.

Room Tip: Have a look what you payed for, first.

I loved this hotel! The staff was very friendly and the beach was beautiful. It had a great view of Diamondhead, and there were plenty of beach chairs available (for rental only.) the food was good, but expensive. I felt breakfast was a little overrated and wished there was a less expensive option in the hotel. However, it is close to Starbucks so we did eat there one morning. The restaurant by the beach was great and the sunset was beautiful. We ate dinner there twice and were happy both times. The bar by the beach was great too, and offered specials that were a good price. Definitely take advantage of that! The pool area is not large, but it's great. The pool was clean and refreshing, waiters come often to bring food and drinks, and the drinks are very well made. I did the spa as well and were happy with it. This hotel is located in the city, so keep that in mind. While it is located on the beach, it is a city view and city atmosphere. I liked that very much about it. I stayed there for the Fourth of July and attended the fireworks show on the beach. I rented chairs for the evening at a great price. It was very, very crowded but the show was amazing and you can't ask for a better location. I would definitely go back to this hotel and would recommend staying there.

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef on the beach for 5 nights at the beginning of October for part of our honeymoon. From getting out of the taxi at the lobby, everything was perfect. The valet took our bags and escorted us to check in where we were seen straight away by a very friendly lady. Check in was fast and easy. Our bags were delivered to our room 2 mins after we arrived. We had a partial ocean view room which was fab. It had a balcony view of the ocean and of the pool. As it was our honeymoon, we had a bottle of champagne delivered to our room courteously of the hotel. Happy days!
The room was great - spacious, clean and a really comfy bed. The maids came in everyday to clean and we're very friendly and helpful at all times.
The hotel is steps away from the beach and a 2 mins stroll from the shops - it's a perfect location.
Food in the hotel was great - the shorebird is fab for breakfast offering an all you can eat buffet. The ocean house restaurant was lovely. We went there on our last night as a treat. We were treated very well and saved a table on the beach front. It was perfect!
We had drinks at the beach bar - cocktails are great there! Service around the pool during the day was fab - everything was brought to you.
The only negative, and it's not a huge thing - they do try to sell you timeshare at the Wyndam. They are very nice people selling it, but just say no as they do go on!!
All in all, great hotel. I would go back there tomorrow and highly recommend to a friend.

We just returned from 6 nights at the Reef. The location was great and loved the open air lobby. The first night out room was not as requested but Marlene was able to get our requested room the next day. It was a 1 bedroom ocean view suite which was roomy and the view was fantastic. We ate breakfast at The Shorebird and The Ocean House 2 of our days there. Both were good but we preferred Ocean House. The beach and pool were both very nice. The beach is rocky so be prepared. The sunset at this location is beautiful. Would definately return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for floors 14 thru 17 for best view. Beach side is very quiet.

The staff are warm and engaging we did have a problem with our room and where moved three times to get the right room but it was worth it. It was no problem once we brought what we booked to thier attention.

Great location central to wonderful resturants and bars car hire and awesome shopping.

We stayed here recently for 3 nights. It was our first stay at this hotel and we have always wanted to stay here after 2 previous trips to Hawaii. For the most part, it did not disappoint. Check in was a little longer than expected with the staff member telling us his very long and boring life story about a Da Vinci painting that his cousin had inherited and had to sell due to illness... good grief it was ridiculous, I don't even know how he got on the topic. We just wanted to get to the room already!

So we get to the room eventually, room 1025 on the 10th floor. I had researched and deliberated over the room types extensively. I had originally wanted to book ocean front rooms but these were a little out of our budget, so we went for ocean view instead. When we checked in I was quite disappointed to have a tiny view of the ocean, and the rest of the view was of Fort Derussy park and the city. I'm not the type to complain so I let it go, but it put a bit of a dampener on the trip for me and according to the room map on the website, it seems like we were put in the wrong category room, but I could be wrong. So a tip for those wanting a really good view - I guess oceanfront is the only way to go (if you can afford it). It later worked out okay as we had an amazing view of the fireworks on Friday night (in front of the Hilton hotel) - this was pretty special and such a nice way to finish our trip.

The room was nice, the bed was quite comfortable. There is not a huge amount of space, though we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. It was nicely set out and the bathroom was a good size. The toilet flushing was really, really loud (like a plane toilet!) which was a little scary when using the bathroom at night time! Housekeeping was a little hit and miss, one day they cleaned our room and took the towels but didn't replace them which was annoying, as we then had to call the front desk and request some more towels. And then the person who stood there to bring them up expected a tip, um sorry, don't think so buddy when it was the hotel's mistake, not ours.

The staff were inconsistent, some were good but overall they weren't the friendliest I have ever dealt with. The guy at the pool hut was quite rude and ignored me at first because he was too busy playing on his phone! Shorebird staff were ok. We did have a good meal here. Make sure you use the coupons in the book they give you when you check in. We didn't get to try the Kani Pa Grille but heard it is quite good.

We didn't use the pool either, it is quite small though there are ample sunchairs which is good. The beach was beautiful, though a little rocky. If you walk a bit further it's little less rocky.

Ignore the card on the bed about a 'free gift' - it's a timeshare scam. These people are so annoying, I understand they have a job to do but I think there are better ways to go about it than harassing people on their holiday! Avoid the left hand (Wyndham) side of the activity desk as this is where they are located.

Don't miss a photo opportunity with the sunset - pretty spectacular. Would have loved to try the Ocean House restaurant - maybe next time we are in Waikiki.

We did enjoy our stay at the Outrigger and will definitely be back to Hawaii, though I'm not too sure if we would stay here again. We might look at another Outrigger property instead. The Outrigger Waikiki Shore next door looked pretty good and seemed to have great views.
