“Loved this hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

We've just completed a 7 night stay and I can't speak highly enough of the Outrigger.
When we checked in I asked to be on a higher floor, away from elevators. The manager at check in offered me three different rooms - one on the 6th floor closer to the beach but also closer to elevators; a second room on the 8th floor which was similarly positioned; and a room on the 14th floor, a bit further from the water but also far from the elevator. We chose the room on the 14th floor in the Pacific tower and really loved it. From here we had a great view of the water - think the trick here is to get on as high a floor as possible. Only small issue was the sound of delivery trucks reversing to unload in the hotel next door which could be heard from around 6am.
You do get a bit of sound from people in rooms around you but this is the case in most hotels and we weren't impacted by this at all.
Balcony was small but easily fits two people.
At $35 a night valet parking is expensive so we chose to park at an outdoor car park a couple of blocks away. Max here was $20 per night or $10 if out by 7am. We didn't have any problems with this. Valet were a bit frustrating whenever we pulled up to drop something off but I suppose it's their job to know how long you're going to be there etc.
The Wyndam timeshare folk are a pain both inside the hotel and on the street but a firm no worked ok for us and we weren't overly harassed.
Hotel restaurants weren't fabulous. Our favourite was the Ocean House given it is right on the water and there's full table service. Shorebird requires you to cook your own dinner on a massive BBQ which wasn't our thing. The other restaurant towards the front of the hotel plays live music until 9pm each night but we didn't try that one so i won't comment.
Overall we loved how close we were to the beach and felt very comfortable in our room. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as high as possible.

The Reef is located right on the beach and is close to Beachwalk, Royal Hawaiian Mall, International Marketplace, DFS Galleria, etc. so it appeals to many different types of clientel. It has a short sandy beach with very warm water although it is shallow. Snorkeling is poor here as the wave action causes too much sand in the water so all you see is urchins and coral but you can be surprised by a few sea turtles swimming with you! BE AWARE that the card you find on your pillow offering a free gift is actually a push for Wyndham Time Shares and if you accept - free buffet breakfast at Shore Bird and $150 coupon for an activity. While it was never presented at the desk as a time share promo - "we will take you to the new shopping area and show you a nice new hotel" is the beginning of a 2+ hour sales pitch. They tell you no pressure but you are brought to a boiler room with couples all around you being told about the incredible deal they are offering you. Here is an important link to Hawaii's Time Share Promo rules as Hawaii has really stepped down on time shares and their promises. It is 2+ hours you will never get back and do lots of on line research before you go! http://hawaii.gov/dcca/rico/r_brochures/time-share-brochure.pdf

We just returned from our stay at the Outrigger Reef On the Beach. The hotel was nice, and good value for the deal we got. The rooms were kept clean, and were always done before we returned from the day out. The pool was a bit on the chilly side, and the hot tubs a bit too hot for the time of day, but both were clean, and not too busy. They always had clean towels ready for you wherever you needed them throughout the day, but I didn't like having to pay to get a lounge chair at the beach,we've always stayed in Mexico where you always got chairs to lay on on the beach for free, and they were NOT CHEAP to rent there either. The restaurants in the area were quite expensive, but had pretty good food though. The Yard House was really nice to eat at. The only DOWN part of this vacation came at the very end when we had booked a shuttle to get to the airport to leave. The BELL DESK told us it was cheaper and better to book a shuttle then take a taxi to the airport , so we booked it for 8 pm. We got there in plenty of time with our luggage in tow, and no shuttle showed up at 8:00. I went to the bell desk to ask where it was, and the women called and said the company said the driver was on his way and would be a few mins. Well, 15 more mins past and I asked her again, and she now seemed annoyed that I was asking her since it wasn't "their" company, even though they suggested it, so she said they were at a nearby hotel and would be there soon. We couldn't wait anymore as our flight was leaving soon and we had to get to the airport on time, so at 8:25 we had to catch a $45 taxi and luckily the guys at the front of the hotel directing the valet etc, had a taxi on stand by for us and we jumped in and got there right in time. We were very upset that this was the way our holiday ended and the attitude of the BELL desk was awful!!! Stressful way to end a nice relaxing week, and it left a bad taste in our mouth from what was quite a nice stay there.
Otherwise, besides being quite pricey to eat/drink around the hotel, it was a good place to stay at.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 6th floor in the ocean tower, and it had a quite patio, and a bit of a view if...

Stayed for 7 nights at this hotel on our first trip to Hawaii. Very impressed with all staff and their friendliness right from the start. Had booked a partial ocean view room and we got a room on the 10th floor with a great view of the ocean as well as the hotel pool. Rooms were quite spacious and extremely clean. Great location, a lot of shops, restaurants within easy walking distance. We even walked from Ala Moana shopping centre which took about 25 mins (you can get the pink trolley or a bus there). Ate in the the restaurant by the pool a couple of times and the Shorebird restaurant late one night (enjoying the karaoke at the same time). The food was really nice and prices were about average. The other restaurant was a bit pricey for us so didn't eat there. Although we didn't use it, the hotel valet parking at $35 a day was way too expensive!!! Beach in front of hotel was a little bit rocky and our kids actually preferred to swim in the hotel pool and hot tubs. Only booked one tour through the Expedia staff at the hotel but they were extremely helpful and full of information - didn't get harassed by any time share staff at all but we didn't attempt to collect our "free gift" either. Starbucks downstairs at hotel was extremely busy in morning but handy to have and of course lots of ABC stores nearby, in all directions. The hotel also held different activities every day, for children and adults such as lei making, walking tours and traditional card making. We didn't have time for these as there was too many other things to do, but a great idea. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would definitely return to this hotel.

Unfortunately Outrigger Reef on the Beach is disappointing to say the least.

We checked in yesterday. The staff assisting with luggage were very helpful and lovely. Our flight was arriving early so we were very early to check in. We corresponded with the hotel prior to arrival and we were content to wait until our room was ready if necessary. The correspondence with the hotel was great - they were prompt and informative in emails.

It was a pleasant surprise to find our room was ready after a long flight. However our room is very disappointing. We have been given a room overlooking the building next door. The only way to see the ocean is to stand on the lanai and crane your neck. We had also not been given a king bed.

I immediately called the check in desk and the staff where very unhelpful - basically saying that there were no other rooms but something may come up tomorrow where they can swap us.

We are travelling with another couple. They were not able to check in until late afternoon. Luckily they got what they paid for - a king bed with a wonderful ocean view. Tip - ask for the rooms in the Pacific Tower ending in 51.

On seeing there room and realizing how we had definitely not been given an ocean view I went to speak to the front desk. Frank was helpful - there was one other room available. It was at the back of the hotel. The manager apologized and discounted our rate for one night. But we booked months in advance for an ocean view because that is what we wanted. If we wanted what could only be described as a partial ocean view at a cheaper rate then we would have booked that.

Now we have been told not to unpack - they may be able to move us today however we will be without a room for a few hours. This is an inconvenience. And the room doesn't have a king bed anyway.

It is unfortunate to have to write a negative review and something I have rarely done. But overall my impression thus far is one of a hotel that does not care for its clients, is disorganized and poor value for money. I have even tried to book elsewhere but nothing is available.

Definitely reconsider booking at this hotel.

For the positives some staff are helpful (not the front desk), the location is good and the rooms are clean.

Aloha & thank you for your feedback. It is always difficult to respond when we have disappointed a guest as we pride ourselves in our customer service and our mission is to “wow” every guest. Hotel occupancies fluctuate greatly which makes it nearly impossible to guarantee bedding or a particular room. We do guarantee category.
Check-in time is 3pm & check-out is at 12noon, this is standard in Hawaii. We are currently looking at our bedding inventory and to increase the king category.

Once again, thank you for the feedback which we will use in an upcoming service training class and you have our apologies for any inconveniencies which you encountered.

This hotel had a great location in Waikiki.(on the beach) The rooms were very well appointed & very clean. Even though the beach wasn't the greatest at this location we were still able to get into the ocean & enjoy the water.
The breakfast buffet was very good value for the dollar with 50% off coupons easily available through several promotions.
Even though we were not in an ocean view room the view of the city with palm tress & the park next door was still very nice.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Waikiki.

Room Tip: go higher than the 2nd/3rd floors for better view
