We stayed at the Outrigger Reef twice during a trip to Hawaii in October for a total of 7 nights. The service at the hotel is very mixed, ranging from good to rude. The valet staff were great and very helpful. The reception staff ranged from rude (first stay) to good (second stay).

We had booked an Oceanview room for both occasions with mixed results. The first room had an great view, but was mostly a view of the pool and deck with a reasonable good view of the ocean. I actually liked this view as there was a good atmosphere at night with the music from the pool restaurant. The second stay was also an "oceanview" room but was mostly a view of the ugly hotel next door, and the airconditioning system / roof of the lower floors of the Outrigger. It was too noisy to sit on the balcony, as all you could hear was the roar of the aircon and the cleaning staff from the hotel next door.

We had booked through a preferred partner (Whatahotel), who provide great service to us with this booking and other hotels we stayed at in Hawaii (we would definitely recommend them). The preferred partner booking provided us with breakfast for 2 daily, an amenity gift (biscuits) and an upgrade if available. It was definitely worth booking through Whatahotel for the included breakfasts alone, however we were very disappointed with the Outrigger Reef as they seemed to completely ignore the upgrade. While I understand that it is subject to availability, I would have expected them to at least say something along the lines of "we are sorry but there are no upgrades available". However, I got the feeling that the reception staff did not even bother to try to find a room, or whether the Outrigger Reef ever offer this in reality. On the first visit, I asked if an upgrade was available, and was rudely dismissed.

The rooms are adequate and clean. The balconies are small but ok. Valet parking very expensive at $35 (plus tips).

We were in the Outrigger's "Business Centre" one night and were having difficulties printing a confirmation email for our visit to Pearl Harbor the next day. After spending a small fortune trying to print (the yahoo page would crash every time 'print' was selected), my wife approached the Outrigger reception staff for assistance. She was dismissed and told that it was not their problem as it was managed by another party. What a pathetic response for a hotel and completely summed up their attitude toward guests. A good hotel would have assisted their guests, even if it was managed by another party.

We ate at all three restaurants. The Ocean House was perfect for breakfast. Great view, service and excellent breakfast food. We had breakfast at the buffet at the Shorebird on day 1, then wisely changed over to the Ocean House. The Shorebird breakfast buffet was ok, but with an odd assortment of food. The Ocean House has the same view but in a more relaxed atmosphere with better food and service. The Kana Pile Grille had a great Cobb Salad and burger.

On another note, if you are traveling to Hawaii and only staying at Waikiki, you are missing out! Grab a cheap 30 min flight to Maui or Kauai for a few days - you won't regret it! At the very least, hire a car and drive to the North Shore.

Overall, this is an average hotel. Apart from a couple of rude staff, everything is ok but not great. We will look to stay somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Be careful if paying extra for an "Oceanview" room. A pool view is probably nicer depending on where they put you.

Recently stayed at the Outrigger Reef, our initial impression was not good. Having booked an Oceanview room we were given a Partial Oceanview in the Pacific Tower with a view of the hotel next door. After compaining to the reception desk we were told very rudely that as we had booked through Expedia we would have to take it up with them.......not good enough! Finally spoke to someone in management at the Outrigger and we were moved to the Ocean Tower 8th floor with an ocean view, this took several hours which was a waste of our first afternoon.
From then on our stay at the Outrigger was great, we ate twice at the Paui Paui Grill by the pool where different groups perform each night. Julia the waitress was fantastic being a local she was extremly informative and super efficent. It's a pity that the grill will not take bookings for 2 people only 5 and upwards, most unhelpful for guests. An odd decision as most of the people staying were couples. The bell boys were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. The Shorebird buffet breakfast was very average.
We did 2 tours with Roberts, The Island Circle and Pearl Harbour, both were excellent with the driver/guide very professional.

Room Tip: Higher floors less noise from entertainers poolside at night.

My wife and I had booked a night in this Hotel as we flew into Honolulu for the friday night before we were to get on the pride of america cruise ship for our Honeymoon cruise. From the time we arrived we were treated with exceptional service and hospitality. I had booked a ocean front room and when we got there they had upgraded us to an ocean front suite and it was absolutely incredible. We were also given a surprise gift of champagne which we finished off on the balcony admiring the ocean view and diamond head that night. When we got there it was actually 10pm our time and we headed down to dinner where we were able to cook our own steaks in the restaurant which was a little different but fun at that as the chefs helped and catered to what we needed. We then took a walk on the beach being dark and enjoyed the rest of the night as it was late for our time.

We were only there for the night as the next day we got up and had breakfast at the poolside bar area and proceeded to checkout as we had a day planned touring pearl harbor and the historic sites. I truly wish we had been able to stay more than one night as when we got there it was so late our time and had wished we had more time to enjoy the hotel and its ammenities. We were sad to leave what was provide at a great cost but more fun for the next week awaited. Would highly recomend it as it was very nice and if we ever went back to waikiki would stay again..

Room Tip: Ocean front or corner suite is only way to go.

Good location on one end of Waikiki - lots of restaurants and stores in walking distance. The beach cabanas cost $15/hr, $30/half-day, $40/full day, and they are necessary to avoid the intense sun. Snorkeling near the jetty is decent - not Hanauma, but you see a few fish. Parking is $35/day plus valet tips. Considering our car cost us $14/day, the parking price was painful but I guess the market rate.

Our ocean-view room gave a little slice of the ocean from the balcony. We could hear live local music from the bar until 9 p.m., which was a plus to us but could be a minus if you are jetlagged and going to bed early. Starbucks downstairs is convenient.

Rooms are clean and a good size. Staff is friendly and helpful.
