We stayed here twice, we liked it so much, a couple of weeks apart. Beautfully redone, the property looks great. Nice rooms, nice pool & jacuzzis, right on the beach. The staff is so nice and accomodating, real aloha spirit. The Kani KaPila grill by the pool has great food & super pool service. Fun location with great restaurants & shopping nearby.

My children and I (along with my mother) stayed at the outrigger reef last august and had a wonderful time. When we decided to go back to Oahu this august we knew just where we were going to stay. We talked about Hawaii and the Outrigger so much that our family friends decided to come with us. We were not disappointed!!! The room was great as was Cecilia who made sure our room was spotless.

The staff at the Kani Ka Pilla Grille was amazing. From the servers who worked the pool area to Jesse the supervisor who came around periodically to make sure everything was okay (which it always was).

We could not have been happier and there is no doubt in my mind that if we are lucky enough to visit Hawaii next year…this is where we will be staying!!

This hotel is fantastic! Right on the beach with direct access to the beachwalk, and is an extremely short walk to all the shopping and dining in Waikiki (Beachwalk, Collections, and Royal Hawaiian Shopping). This hotel was renovated in 2010 from top to bottom and looks great--has a luxury feel. The pool is a decent size and has plenty of lounge chairs--never gets completely filled up, even when busy. The area directly in front of the hotel on the beach can get a little crowded, but you can walk up and down Waikiki beach and find a spot easily. The only other hotels directly on the beach are Sheraton Waikiki, Outrigger Waikiki, Westin Moana Surfrider, and Sheraton Royal Hawaiian--all of which were significantly more expensive than the Outrigger Reef. Find this hotel on Costco Travel, and the package includes free transportation to/from the airport. This hotel also has FREE WiFi.

I booked this hotel based on it being #3-4 on TripAdvisor for nearly one year and was a bit disappointed. Travelled with spouse and 2 kids aged 5 and 11.

ROOM: Splurged on an oceanfront room booked 7 months in advance and ended up on the third floor right above the rental chairs and the guy with the noisy parrots (even though I was there by 1:00, 2 hours ahead of check in time). From room 319, could not see Diamond Head ( too low) but had a great view of the homeless people who sleep on the beach each night. Tried to get a higher room but no luck. The room was adequate, nothing too fancy, had a refrigerator, basic bathroom, TV, desk. Balcony was VERY small.

HOUSEKEEPING: was less than good. We had to call down to the front desk on 3 different days because our room had not been cleaned by dinner time. They kept trying to tell me that the Do Not Disturb sign was up but it was not (however the room next door did have theirs up so maybe they got confused?). Cleaning was marginal and the balcony was never swept so we kept dragging sand into the room.

POOL/BEACH: Beach in front of hotel is VERY VERY small, also rocky. Please walk 100 feet to Fort De Russy beach next door - gorgeous! The pool at the hotel is ok but it is saline and made our eyes burn so badly we only used it once.

FOOD: We took the breakfast package and were pleasantly surprised. We expected continental breakfast for free but we had our choice of a great menu or a buffet We ate off the menu and could not believe that we had fabulous omelets and steak and eggs with juice and coffee. Food was wonderful, service was perfect. Everyone in the Ocean House restaurant was friendly and polite. Ask for Jen - she is terrific!

MISC - coin op laundry in basement was a plus. Valet parking was quick and efficient.

GENERAL WAIKIKI - if you don't get the breakfast package there is a good Denny's across from the hotel. There is an unbelievable amount of shopping and restaurants within 2 blocks walking distance. Hotel is central to nearly everything so a good anchor point. Don't bring beach stuff from home - it's cheap at the ubiquitous ABC stores (seriously there are at least 3 on every block!). If you arrive on Waikiki on a Sat night, don't despair, it gets quieter as the week progresses but it is INSANE on Sat! Thought I was in Times Square on New Year's Eve!

4th trip to Waikiki this year. Stayed at 4 of the 6 beach hotels. 4 our $ OR Reef is the da kine. Very HAPPY longterm staff from John @ bell, Alohalani @ reception, housekeeping & pool staff lots of longevity. Down side-rocky beach, w/ reefwalkers no big ting. Pluses most all rooms w/lanai. Ocean House-fine dining, Shorebird-Family dining, many oceanfront seats, nightly karaoke. Kani ka Pila-Hawaiian style dining, nightly local talent. Cultural programs. Hospitality room. Coupon book.

We stayed here for one week of our honeymoon and loved it. The hotel is big and modern and beautifully done up. Service was very good and the 2 restaurants, while quite expensive, were excellent. The Shore bird has a grill your own which was fun and the Ocean House was outstanding. High cost but very high quality - one of the best meals I have had and a perfect beachside setting.

The pool was not ideal as it is a bit shaded by the surrounding buildings and the beach you are on can get a little busy. However, you are a 5 minute walk from the main strip of Waikiki beach a which is absolutely beautiful, especially around sunset.

There are many local bars and restaurants within a short walk and lots of shops. I would highly recommend the island vintage coffee cafe on Kalakaua Ave, about 10 minutes walk away - the coffee here is the best I have had - plus there is a nice free hula show most evenings, outside the shopping centre that it is part of.

We loved our stay here and would recommend it highly.

Cons:
The service, hmmmmmm, how much time do you have?
Front Desk needs some serious help in some customer service skills! When my husband asked for a newspaper from the front desk, they said "what room are you in", response, "no we don't have any! Like that even matters? He looked behind the bell desk and saw a stack of newspapers!
I asked for an upgrade, again they said, "what room are you in?" You'll have to pay $50 or more for an upgrade, all while making us feel like we weren't worthy!
The Shorebird Restaurant, yea, it's beautiful and everything, if you don't mind cooking your own food while on vacation, and they don't offer anything else on their menu that doesn't require you cooking it! It might have been ok if they were only charging around $15, but come on we're talking $28-30, no thank you, I'd rather go somewhere else! Where? The other restaurant, that was too expensive to even look at, right on the beach, we didn't try. Kani Ka Pila Grille is good for dinner, bartenders and waitress' are awesome, breakfast is awful & service sucks in the am!
Laundromat... nice that they have it, if you don't mind paying $2.50 per wash and dry! It's cheaper to buy a new wardrobe, then to do laundry, wtw?
When it came time to checkout, never once did they ask how our stay was, I asked the clerk if she could please credit us back for a movie I accidentally ordered. I had called beforehand and they said it would be no problem, but not this lady, she was having a problem with it. She wanted to know how many minutes had passed before I had called, to cancel, then she also wanted to know who I spoke to, and that he was wrong in telling me, "if it was under 10 mins they should credit you, when it's only supposed to be under a minute. I'm going to have to go talk to my boss about this, because if it was more than a minute, we will have to charge you.
Pros:
The Bellman, are awesome!
