“A truly great revamp of a timeless hotel placed directly on the beach at Waikiki”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2011

Great location, situated on the beach Fort DeRussy end of Waikiki Beach, with all the nightlife of Beach Walk and Lewers straight directly behind. The two main bars are totally different, the large bar on the beach caters for a livelier crowd and much larger but is a must, the smaller 'lobby/pool bar' owned directly by the hotel is much smaller, more intimate and offers a great Happy Hour. The hotel offers a good choice of eateries in the bars or in sophistacted but casual restaurants (it is Hawaii after all) but within steps of the hotel there is an array of alternatives, some actually encouraged to be visited by the hotel. For shopping, there is ample in Waikiki itself, some stores such as Macy and the more high quality stores such as Tiffany, Gucci on luxury row, but venture out a little further to the Ala Moana shopping centre 15 minutes walk away, or short bus trip and you have close to 250 shops and multitude of restaurants to choose from in the largest outdoor mall in the USA. This hotel is also only a few minutes walk from the main Convention centre also. All in all deserves one of the top billings on any recommondation travellers website, but a must is to visit it's sister beach hotel, the Hotel Waikiki Beach and enjoy a drink and dinner (or lunch / breakfast) at the infamous Dukes Bar.

Room Tip: Part sea view is fine, but ask for high floor

The Outrigger Reef Hotel staff was so friendly and welcoming. They answered any and all questions we had about the island and all it's activities. At the beach, the Assistant Manager of Beach Activities of Maui, Steve Mundy had chairs and bogey boards available to us every day and gave me a great rate on a killer pair of Maui Jim sunglasses! He was so helpful to us each day! Our rooms were clean and the soaps and lotions provided were dreamy! It is centrally located and easy to walk anywhere in downtown Waikiki! There's literally nothing we disliked about our experience here! We're definitely going back to that location every year!

Stayed at the Outrigger for 5 nights. We had an oceanfront room, with the ocean about 40 feet away. Room was on the 4th floor, with two lanai with table and chairs. Unfortunately, most mornings the beach cleaning machine started vacuuming around 6:30am and surfers would show up even earlier to be ready to catch the first waves. If I stayed here again, I would just get an oceanview room, which also had a lanai and were less expensive. We ate in two of the restaurants in the hotel, both were good. Pool area was nice and several shops are on the lobby level along with an Activities desk. Room was very clean and all of the staff we had contact with were polite and friendly. Bed was very comfortable and bathroom large. Room service was always on time and the tip was included in the price. Beach was a little narrow and could get crowded, but the swimming was good. Water craft to rent was close by, as were some of the boat tours. Many restaurants and shops within a 3 block area.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, it's price was comparable with many other Waikiki luxury hotels.

Chose this hotel based on Outrigger Hotels website & other TripAdvisor reviews. Stayed here 3 nights. Extremely pleased! We chose a partial ocean view room (room 609 was what we were given). Enjoyed a nice view of the beach/ocean to the right (east) of our lanai & pool/public area to th left (west). Room was clean, well maintained, not huge but comfortable & quiet even though located at the elevators. Bathroom nice size, housekeeping unobtrusive & tidy every day. Bed & pillows among the best we have enjoyed in our travels. A lot of families with kids were staying here but you would never know it outside the restauarants. Hotel staff from bell staff to concierge to front desk to restaurant welcoming, professional & efficient. Enjoyed a wonderful breakfast oceanside @ "Shorebird" each morning (included in the package we went with through AAA). Eveything from basic cereals to fruits, juices, breakfast meats & seafood to ethnic selections. If you don't have a package like we did, the approx $15 pp was a great price for the choices you have. We saw that many folks of many national origins were staying here & everyone seemed to fill their plates. Shorebird has an apparently popular dinner each evening where you choose your entree that you grill yourself on a huge charcoal bbq (instructions, grill times for desired doneness provided along with some supervision) along with a "salad bar" for your sides. This was fun & delicious even though I didn't come here planning to do my own cooking. The beach in front of the Outrigger is narrow but it is public. We could walk from the Hilton Hawaiian Village to just beyond the Sheraton Waikiki without obstruction. You do pay extra $$$ if you want to spend the day on the beach with lounge chairs, umbrellas, etc. The hotel appears to contract w/ vendors to provide these amenities. The concierge (Expedia desk) was great as we planned our daily activities. The bus system is efficient though crowded as we discovered when we used it to get to Diamond Head. We initially thought of staying @ the Sheraton as we did on our honeymoon yrs ago. After we walked through the Sheraton lobby that looked more like a shopping mall than hotel, we decided the Outrigger was a good decision. We didn't rent a car in Oahu. Avoid doing so if you can. All hotels, including the Outrigger charge huge fees for parking which is at a premium.

Room Tip: Request ocean view room w/ odd numbers

I was disappointed in the lack of WiFi in the meeting room. I could get internet in the room with an ethernet cable. The staff did not seem to have a legitimate answer, or concern, and the answers were not consistent.
I enjoyed the shops inside, and my room was quiet, and comfortable.

We stayed six nights in the oceanfront room and couldn't have been happier. Got into hotel late at night and breathed a sigh of relief! What you see online, truly is what you get and more. Plenty of room for the four of us, having hide-a-bed was great bonus, along with separate area to get ready with sink and mirror (outside of shower area).
Took previous reviews advice and asked for room on 8th floor (sixth floor and up would have been fine). However, noise from beach or otherwise was never an issue. Fabulous location if you're looking to be on ocean.
Rooms were clean (huge factor in my happiness), staff from checking in to checking out ... very accomodating. Our housekeeper made a point to let us know if there was anything she could do for us, to please let her know. When we needed more coffee, towels, etc late at night, we called desk and housekeeping had it up to us in minutes. (We aren't demanding, so this was impressive.) Only thing we didn't realize was valet parking is not optional. We would have preferred to not use valet, but seeing the area, understand why it is set up that way (available space). The valet parking staff ~ very nice and accomodating. Can really say that about every staff person we interacted with!
We originally were going to stay three nights at this hotel and three nights on North Shore. So incredibly glad we didn't. We had great access to entire island from Waikiki Beach. We were very happy with our choice and if we end up on Oahu again, without a doubt, will stay at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach!
