OHANA Waikiki East Hotel
Ranked #43 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 15, 2009

Firstly the location of this hotel is excellent , it is a block from the beach and within easy walking of any restaurant or shop within Waikiki . There are bus stops and tram stops right across the street in front of the Ohana West .

We stayed on the 17th floor and had excellent views of the beach and mountains . The room we had was a 1 bedder with a small kitchen and 2 balconies . there was 4 of us so was a little cramped in size and our kids had to share the pull out sofa in the living area. There is an express lift wich services the floor above 15 and floors are only accesible via room key which is a nice comfort. The hotel itself is quite quiet however even from 17 floors up you can still here the street noise.

I have read a lot of comment re the small size of the shower but it wasn't that bad - however there was not much room when sitting on the toilet !! Otherwise the bathroom is fine . There is free high speed internet in the room and that worked well.

The pool area is nice - doesn't get much sun but in Hawaii that isn't really a problem and there is a verey hot jacuzzi (nice !) . There are pool towels available from the front desk .

Front desk was a bit iffy depending who served you , at check in we were served by a very abrupt clerk - definitely no aloha with her though subsequent contacts improved significantly . The staff seemed friendly enough although one time a staff member again was quite rude and abrupt when we got in the wrong elevator.

Housekeeping was OK - when we first checked in there was insufficient towels and pillows for the 4 of us and it took a few calls to get them delivered . The sheets on the pull out sofa when we arrived were dirty and had holes in them and we left a note for the housemaid on the bed - she removed the note but didnt change the sheets , which necessitated us making another call to room service and then they came and changed them .

My wife said the hotel felt dirty , apart from some mould in the hower i'm not sure I saw this but maintenance could certainly be improved , in our room a large part of the wall was peeling away and in dire need of repair - see photo attached .

Tour desk in the lobby was quite helpful and there was also a small business centre that could be used.

When you stay here you get free access to the Pink Line trolley service around Waikiki and up to Ala Moana Shopping Centre , on face value that sounds good and in effect it saved us a few dollars however it is a Nightmare trying to get on the trolleys . It is supposed to run every 10 minutes however on some occasions we waited and gave up after 45 minutes , other times trolleys fly past the stop because they are full. Part of the reasons for this and it doesn't appear to be enforced is that a lot of Japanese Tourists who have access to their own private trolleys jump onto the first available trolley and consequently the private shuttles go around empty and the pink line is full and delayed.

All in all the Ohana East is not a bad hotel and if I couldnt afford beach frontage I would stay here again

Although this property is obviously quite old you get the feeling they are going out of their way to please. Many amenities including free in-room wifi, free 15 min phone calls to Canada and mainland US, and micro-kitchens. The room was clean and staff was great. The location was good, not on the beach but only one block away and surrounded by restaurants, shops and convenience stores.

Only downsides were the loud location in Waikiki (if staying in Waikiki I'm sure all hotels are loud) and nightly parking of $18.

We have been to Honolulu 5 times and have stayed in this hotel each time. Great location, friendly staff and great parking although it is about 18.00 per day. Some of the "simple saver" rooms are near the elevator shaft and there is some noise from that other wise it is a great place to stay.

We stayed here for four days at the end of our trip. We stayed in time shares before we checked into the Ohana East. We thought the staff was friendly and helpful. The beds were the most comfortable of the whole trip. The rooms were clean and comfortable. It was a two block walk to Waikiki Beach. The central location was convenient to shopping and restraunts. There are probably 30 or 40 restraunts in a square block. You get on the pink trolley line for free by just showing your room key. We never even got on the trolley because we could easily walk to most things we needed. The international Market was adjacent to the hotel with lots of local items for sale at reasonable prices. Waikiki beach was beautiful and the sand is softer than other beaches. The pool was pretty and got afternoon sun. They had local vendors set up in the lobby. The price of this hotel was very reasonable. They had a mini fridge in the rooms. The balcony was small, but served its purpose. It was an easy walk to the beach and was safe at night. You would be tempted to stay close to the hotel, but I would suggest that you explore some of the beaches on the other parts of the island because they are less crowded and absolutely beautiful. I would stay her again. We were on the 12th floor so we didn't hear any street noise.

We had a great time on our honeymoon! The staff was sooo friendly! Our room was on the 17th floor so we had a great view. Needs little improvements here & there, for example the shower is very small, if you are a closterphobic person, you wouldnt like the shower. Other than that, the hotel was very cute! We were only in the hotel at night because we were out everyday, but the hotel was very very cute & enjoyable!

This hotel has everything I needed---pool, fitness room, parking, room features, etc. The best part is its location just a couple blocks from Kuhio beach and between Kings Village and the Royal Hawaiian shopping center. We also got free rides on the pink line trolley just by showing our room key.

Anyone who is looking for a centrally loated hotel in Waikiki & is on a budget, this is
a perfect option. We stayed in a cityview room but could also see a full view of the ocean!!! Staff is very friendly and welcoming & loved that there is a pool and a jacuzzi.
Their double beds seemed very large to me and loved the complimentary coffee too.
