We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village while attending a conference. There were some positive aspects to it but we are not resort people and did not really care for the experience. We also spent several days with a rental car touring the island and staying at much more modest places. We stayed in the Tapa tower and our room was spacious, newer, comfortable and all that we could have asked for. The staff were uniformly helpful and friendly, easily some of the nicest and most helpful staff I have seen.

As other reviewers have noted, this is a big resort. They have it set up so that you can visit Hawaii and never leave. You also can have almost no contact with anything that is not the resort. So if that is what you are looking for this is probably a good place but if you want to really see Hawaii and interact with Hawaiian people in some capacity other than service workers this is not the place for you. The layout is set up to help you spend money at every turn and corner. And, you better be prepared to spend because virtually everything, food, clothing, entertainment etc. that you buy in the resort will cost you half as much to double what you can get it outside of the resort and Waikiki. What is annoying are the nickle and dime charges, such as $14.00 a day for internet, on top of fairly steep room rates.

We saw lots of families and I could see how it would be a great, but very expensive place to bring the family. This would not be our idea of a romantic get away place. Too loud, too crowded, and too many kids.

Room Tip: Everyone we knew who stayed in the Tapa tower were happy with their rooms.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort is one of the best properties on Waikiki Beach. It has a good (not great) location at the end of the beach near the harbor and its beach is very friendly for young families. The buildings themselves are comparable to the Westin in Maui. We received an upgrade to the Rainbow Tower with a lovely view of the beach looking south capped with a wonderful Diamondhead vista. The view was pretty amazing, but it's a fairly pretty penny. The rooms are great, but the hallway and elevator experience is starting to show some age which is to be expected given the volume this place must do. The elevators have a weird control system where you enter your floor number and wait - a very Japanese way to do it.
The downer of this resort is that they upcharge you for everything. Self-parking is $27/day, valet $33/day. Resort fee is $25/day. An umbrella on the beach? Extra $30/day. Dinners are pretty outrageously priced, but thankfully there are not one, but two ABC stores on premise. I'm not a big fan of this type of pricing as I think they sucker you in and then have you as a captive consumer, but I realize that most of the big chains are doing this these days.
Another nitpick I have is that their traffic management in the main drop-off area is a bit chaotic. Granted there was some construction that closed one of the arteries, but their Bell/Valet staff could be more proactive to ensure flow and customer pedestrian safety.

Room Tip: Rainbow Tower Ocean View Facing Diamonhead are Great if you can afford it.

We stayed here after much research into the many places to stay in Waikiki. It was great for us with 2 children and we felt the location was perfect. It is a very big hotel but not unmanageable. We were very fortunate to be upgraded to the Rainbow Tower with a fabulous view of Diamond head. If we had been put in Tapa tower (where our original room was ) this review may have been less favourable as it is a walk to the beach and main pool and is no-where near as scenic. Because of the hotel size you do not get that personal interaction with hotel staff but I was expecting this. A word about the Lu'au here- it is on the roof top of one of the hotel buildings-we did not go so cannot comment on it but from what we saw of the location we were glad we didn't book it.
The children enjoyed meeting the hotel penguins and we enjoyed the pool side bar with the friendly staff and great cocktails. All in all a great place to stay if you get the Rainbow tower.

Room Tip: Diamond tower has the best views and is right on the beach.

We stayed here as a family recently, booking 2 rooms in the Diamond Tower. The rooms were basic, but did the trick. The location of the hotel is good, and a bit off the strip. If you don't mind walking to town, it's a great location. If you want to be right in the heart of town, I would recommend staying a bit closer. The hotel area is huge and has lots of shops and eatery places. Personally, I would prefer a more private/intimate hotel, but if you have a family, its a great place. Be sure to check out the penguins and feeding time! And, wi-fi is free in the lobby - don't pay the $25/room/night charge.

We enjoyed hiking up Diamond Head, Kailua, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and lots of lounging and shopping. While the town (in general) feels very American, Oahu is still a gorgeous place to explore and enjoy!

The appointments in this tower are superb-especially the bathroom. Food and Service were equally excellent. The staff members were all courteous and thoughtful. Waiters remembered your drink orders whenever you entered the Bar or Restaurant.

This place is huge, crowded and loud. If you're looking for a hustle and bustle environment, then this is the place for you. Located at the very end (or beginning depending on how you look at it) of Waikiki towards the marina. You can walk to Ala Moana Shopping Center, which claims itself to be the largest outdoor mall in the world. Many shops, restaurants, etc. The place has 8 different towers (about half of them are timeshare (Hilton Grand Vacation Club). There are two Starbucks locations (1 in Kalia tower and 1 in Ali'i tower) and about 5 pools. We never used the pools because each time we went, we couldn't find any empty available chairs. This place even has live penguins on display. This place was a bit too crowded and chaotic for my tastes but I can see how it would work for others. It all depends on what you like. I was there with my wife and three kids (ages 8, 11 and 12) and also with two other familes and their kids. It has a tame beach and also a man-made saltwater lagoon that is nice for very small children, but not quite exciting enough for my kids. One other note: it's big and crowded enough to get lost. Don't send your kids back to the room to get something alone without giving them a cellphone so they can call/text you when they get lost. Not for me, but if you like this kind of thing, it's a decent resort.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful hotel with plenty of stuff to do (before 10 PM anyway), but it just wasn't what I was hoping it would be. It was much further from the shopping/restaurants/nightlife in Waikiki than I expected. Which is not their fault!
I think I would've been better served at the DoubleTree or other Hilton property in Waikiki - closer to the action. It would be great for families! The waterslide pool looked super fun.

Again, not necessarily the hotel's fault, it was my own choice to stay here and to stay at the exclusive tower (hence the 2/3s of my HHonors points).
