Aston Waikiki Beachside Hotel
Ranked #76 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Pros - hop skip and a jump and you're at Waikiki beach. Next door to abc convenience store, close to restaurants, bars and high end shopping. Ocean views above 8th floor are great (as banyan tree on beach must block lower views). Rooms are clean and cleaned daily and towels replaced. Complimentary beach towels and beach mats provided at reception. Free wifi in lobby and reception area. Staff are all friendly and helpful like Larissa and Lave, but Kamaki was outstanding and went the extra mile to arrange an upgrade and remedy our tour issues. Dated but classy decor, lots of mirror area. Showers have good pressure.

Cons - No hotel restaurant (so no meals or brekkie to choose) no bar, no fitness centre which was important for us, no pool. If you don't have an ocean view you may be looking at the blank wall of the hotel behind. Rooms are quite small 17 sq m, and not suitable for kids, no shelving in bathroom to lay out your toiletries. Hotel is difficult to find as the frontage consists of double door entrance on the street. $5 per night for wifi in your room but mostly struggled to get connected. Some rooms spare wall sockets don't work so inconvenience of unplugging your alarm clock or lamp to charge your devices. Air conditioning is noisy. Elevator has room for only 4-5 people. Name is too similar to Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel which is a block away (and has all the extras), so some people may be looking at the wrong website pictures (eg. pool, bar restaurant, fitness centre) and the wrong trip advisor comments and get surprised when they arrive. No kitchenette or microwave to get groceries and make home made dinners (does have bar fridge). No room to have home made dinners, apart from 2 chairs and small table on balcony.

Not a place for families, but ideal for couples or singles who just need a clean, quiet, place to sleep and are prepared to eat out or bring brekie/lunch/dinner packs from abc store or fast food back to eat on balcony and visit the gym a block away, and the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel's restaurant bar.

Before booking this hotel I looked at all the negative reviews 1st. I decided if the complaints were things I could live with or if they were deal breakers. Yes the hotel is older & not the most up to date as far as furnishings. There is no pool, no continental breakfast & no on site restaurants. Guess what? It's Waikiki, there is an ocean within steps of the hotel & 100's of restaurants within walking distance! The only time we were in our room was to shower, change & sleep. That being said, the shower was clean & water pressure was great. The bed was comfortable (this coming from someone with a tempur-pedic at home) & sheets were clean & soft.
My husband & I stayed in a partial ocean view on the 8th floor, no lanai but the windows do open & the view was beautiful! There was plenty of room for both of us, large enough table's to put things on which I felt made up for the lack of counter space in the bathroom. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels. There was a sign in the lobby that some elevator maintenance would be done, to what extent I don't know. Yes the elevator is small but we NEVER waited more then 5 minutes at all hours of the day so I think the 1/2 hour wait comment below is highly exaggerated!
We also thoroughly enjoyed the staff, especially Lave. Every time we had a question, they were all very helpful, even calling to get walking directions for us to a shop we wanted to visit. We had an issue with the tv in our room & within 30 minutes of my husband notifying them, we had a new tv.
I have stayed at many hotels, including some more expensive higher end hotel chains. If you have to have the finer things in life then this is not the hotel for you. If you want clean, comfortable, & a place to lay your head at night with accommodating staff at a great price, then this is the place for you!
If I ever get a chance to come back to Oahu, I would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view without the extra cost of full ocean view, go with partial view. The highe...

Hotel faces the beach just across the road. Desk staff are first class. Tim Laressa and Lave are super friendly, efficient and helpful. The rooms are OK and I'd come back just for the shower !
No restaurant but plenty of places nearby

Would rate negative if I can.

The only reason for this property to exist is its location. Otherwise , this place should be demolished to reconstruct totally.

I requested a 2 beds room during reservation, but guess what? I got a one queen bed room upon check-in, and my request is NOT guaranteed, of course.

That's only the beginning of nightmares...

There's only one tiny old elevator, which can hold only 4 persons at most. You can wait for half an hour during rush times.

The room is so small that you can hardly find a place to put your luggage.
Carpet is sticky.
Smell from bathroom.

Most of all, they still use a window-type air conditioner, which is as loud as a tank.
During the night, you just can't sleep due to the noise from this junk air conditioner; if you turn it off, you still can't sleep due to the noise from the street. What a dilemma!

Did I mention about their antique CRT giant TV? And those full of cracks wooden furniture?
There's a display on the chairs & table in the lobby, saying these are from Qing Dynasty. I thought not only those in the lobby, but all the furniture in the room are also hundred years old.

The staff is not helpful at all. They do not accept luggage deposition overnight. That's all right, cause it is law. But I asked front desk for help, I met three clerks during my stay, nobody until the third one told me there's a luggage storage company at airport. The first just said: "No, we can do nothing!" The second said she will ask her manager, but of course no follow up.

All in all, don't let this horrible place ruin your Waikiki experience!

Go to Park Shore Waikiki: same or even better location, less price and much better quality!

This hotel is excellent, the staff goes out of their way to be friendly and helpful. I recommend this hotel highly and was pleased with our trip to Hawaii. The hotel is centered perfectly and right on Waikiki Beach. Continental breakfast was very good and the coffee is some that you will always remember as the best you ever had, they use Kona Coffee grown on the island and it is the best you will ever have......

Pros: Location, location, location! Straight across the beach and the Duke Kahanamoku Statue. Clean rooms and great staff.

Cons: No window in our room, so make sure not to book Standard Interior room, unless you're on a very tight budget. No shelves in bathroom, meaning no room for your toiletries. Noisy, room right next to the elevator and the linen closets. No free wifi in rooms.

Would stay again: Maybe, but definitely not without upgrading our room. You can't beat the location, but if you're on a budget there are better hotels to choose from.
