“Poor suites”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

Excellent location at end of Waikiki Beach and oceanfront rooms have great view but in our opinion this hotel has gone down in quality in a couple of years. Chipped paint, poorly decorated and equipped suites, mattresses that have seen better days, nice housekeepers, valets/porters but otherwise devoid of service and desk staff not interested. Rooms can be noisy from rooms on either side. Worn but great views from oceanfront rooms. Disapointment with 20th floor suite

Room Tip: Don't stay in Suites 2031 and 2030 When they have events on floor above noise footstpes, dancin...

Aloha, we don’t have a 2031; and upon reviewing the information we have on file it looks like you only stayed in one of our suites. The suite you stayed in is one of our guests' favorites because of the ocean front views and generous space. We’re sincerely sorry that it disappointed you. We are currently reviewing how we can improve our property during the next renovation. Re decorating the guest rooms is something that we can look into, and we thank you for your honest feedback. As for the maintenance issues, your comments have been shared with Hotel Management to ensure the room is welcoming and comfortable for future guests. We apologize for any inconveniences caused to you. Furthermore, we hope you had a lovely time visiting Waikiki.

After travelling around the USA for 8 weeks staying in many and varied hotels at prices much lower than this hotel with no complaints about them at all - this hotel was the most disappointing hotel we have ever stayed in.

This hotel is nothing like how it portrays itself on its website. It is very dated, dirty, smelly and in need of a big overhaul.

There was no welcome on arrival - just “what's your name” and told the lobby was on the next floor up. Reception was no better. We were asked our name, told there was a compulsory amenities fee charge of US$18.00 per night to cover breakfast, internet and DVD movies - even if we didn't want any of those services. We were given our room keys and no explanation about the hotel lift system to your room (nothing like a normal lift system).
Our first room was in the "back blocks" on the 15th floor. We paid for a full ocean view - that we didn’t get (we did go back to reception and advise that we had paid for an ocean view and were told that this was classed as an ocean view).
The room was very smelly and in need of a good clean, paint and refit. Outside our door we had the drinks vending machine, ice machine and housekeeping supply room - the first night we had no sleep from the noise. My partner complained in the middle of the night and was told that they would move us up to the 20th floor away from the machines. When come time to move in the morning – we were told “no the room wasn't ready, it needed some maintenance”. After requesting to see the manager on duty to complain about the service and room we had been given, we were advised that would be moved, not to the room on the 20th floor, but further round to the main part of the hotel and it would be an upgrade to "one of their deluxe rooms at no extra charge". We had to wait until after 3.00pm to access the room. When we finally got to the room - the only upgrade was one extra bedside table and a little better view (although you also looked into the next hotel’s rooms as part of the view). The room was still dirty (even though they said it had been cleaned), in need of a paint, a refit and noisy. We wanted to leave, but we had paid nearly AUS$2,000 for the week’s accommodation and there were defiantly no refunds!
Breakfast was the next little surprise - they gave you a little cooler bag to take with you to have "breakfast by the pool or take it to the beach". The breakfast was very basic, some of the food was stale and you had foam cups with lids that didn't fit, paper bags, and plastic knives, spoons and forks to eat with. Finding somewhere to site to eat was a joke - a hotel with about 600 rooms provides approximately 50 chairs!!! They had a guitar player and one girl dancing while you ate the breakfast - great, except people sat there all morning and occupied the chairs - everyone else missed out on sitting down. Not many people took their breakfast to the beach, they all took the food up to their room - thus spilling milk, hot water and food everywhere on the walking areas and in the lifts. On many occasions this was not cleaned up for ages. From what we could see there were very few housekeeping staff employed.
If you wanted to swim in the small pool, you had to put up with floating bits of food and rubbish from the morning’s breakfast (all the mornings we were there were windy) . The pool surrounds – the concrete around it was very uneven, parts of it missing and the paint flaking off in most areas.
The only things you are provided with in your room as one glass each - no provisions for tea and coffee. The air-conditioner is aimed right at the sleeping area (you cannot change this) and you can't open the window/sliding door as there are no flyscreens and it is far too noisy.
The hotel was over the road from the beach and we are guessing this is what the hotel sells itself on – after chatting to other people, there are much, much better hotels with similar locations.

We are not sure how this hotel has received such good reviews on Trip Advisor. We will never stay again and we have advised our Travel Agent not to book anyone else at the hotel.

Room Tip: Talk to someone who has stayed in Hawaii and do a lot of research - read as many reviews as you can...

Aloha, when you mention ‘full ocean view’ you may be describing an ocean front view. To have a room located on the front of our hotel an ‘Ocean Front’ category must be reserved. We also have an ‘Ocean View’ and ‘Partial Ocean View’ categories. We do guarantee the category reserved because we make our reservations based on the category- therefore, if you ‘paid for a full ocean view’ we absolutely would have provided one for you. Perhaps there was miscommunication with your travel agent.

Furthermore, we receive many positive reviews from our guests because in most of our guest’s opinions, we run a great hotel. Our staff is kind, our amenities provide value, our property is safe and clean, and we’re located directly across the street from Waikiki Beach- one of the most popular destinations in the world. It seems like we tried to accommodate you as much as possible while you were staying with us. You mentioned that our front desk staff simultaneously room moved you upon request and provided a complimentary upgrade with a better view. It’s unfortunate the second room didn’t work out, either. Again, we do apologize for your disappointment, and we thank you for sharing your feedback in order for us to review and consider our opportunities for improvement. We hope you had a lovely time visiting Waikiki.

Rebecca

If able I would've given the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel a 3.5 rating but opted to round up to 4 instead of down to 3 as the staff and location helped make the overall stay a good one despite a few issues with the rooms.

To start, the hotel location across from a really nice swimming beach with sandy bottom enclosed by a sea wall makes it good for families with kids, seniors or those like me who want to have a dip without battling the waves. It's within a few short block walk of the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiʻolani Park one direction as well as the International Marketplace the other so very central within Waikiki.

I opted for my 2 night stay an ocean view room and was on the 16th floor with an excellent unobstructed view along Waikiki toward the Royal Hawai'ian Hotel (Pink Palace). The balcony was a little smaller than expected but you got used to it after a while, though those with height issues take note. There wasn't direct sun in the morning so really liked having my breakfast on the balcony in the shade while watching the stunning scenery below. The BOB (Breakfast on Beach) is a continental breakfast the hotel offers that comes with a small cooler bag in your room which you fill up at food stations on the pool deck and can then take to either the beach, your room or consume on the chairs around the pool. There were pastries, donuts, cereals, fruit, yogurt and juices included and should you want made to order omelettes there is an extra $5 charge for that.

Staying solo my room was plenty big enough for one but can imagine a family of 4 finding it a tighter fit, especially given the bathroom is smaller than others I'd seen on O'ahu. The bathroom also comes without a fan and besides being smaller is also showing it's age with discolored tiles covered by a matt. There was good water pressure and the hot water took only a few seconds to arrive so was happy with that. I did hear from some staff that room renovations are coming later this year so hope they do spruce up the room fittings as I feel they could use it. One other thing I had to consciously remember to do each time I went out was to firmly shut the door as it wouldn't always close by itself as most hotel room doors do. Everything in the room was in working order and nothing was very obviously broken or damaged but you could see the wear & tear over the years in places.

I didn't check out Tiki's Grill & bar which is next to the pool as most nights it seemed full or almost full. It has a retro vintage Hawai'i theme with big tiki statues, fishnets and a volcano and has live music though luckily doesn't play too loud or too late into the night.

There is a $18/night "daily amenity fee" that covers the breakfast on beach, in-room Wi-Fi, free local & toll-free calls, in-room safe, newspaper & PS3 PlayStation so factor that in when making hotel comparisons. I understand these costs were previously charged separately and could add up for some guests but for those like me who don't need a newspaper, play video games, use in-room Wi-Fi or make calls what used to cost a few dollars a day in misc. charges is now $18 and is mandatory so has an impact. Sadly Aston isn't the only hotel chain adding these resort fees but think the cost is too high.

The staff were warm & welcoming and so helped make for a pleasant stay and this along with a good location helped balance off a few small drawbacks about the room. I'd be curious to visit again after some upcoming renovations as it will hopefully make what is a good hotel better.

Aloha, and thank you for the thoughtful review. We’re pleased to learn you enjoyed our friendly staff and desirable location. The swimming area in front of our hotel is much appreciated by many of our guests, we’re glad you like it! It’s also really fun to walk on the pier that jets out into the water. It makes watching the boogie boarders and surfers super fun and up close!

We are currently reviewing some potential improvements we’d like to make to the hotel and/or guest rooms. Please check-in with us (or me) the next time you’d like to visit. I’ll be happy to provide you an update on what we’ve been doing for our property, or possibly work with you and our reservations department to find a great room to meet your needs.

I stayed for 1 night at this hotel with my family, went to Big Island and came back for 2 nights cause I already had a reservation.
Location is great, staff is friendly, rooms are big enough.

1st night:
- amazing room, balcony with ocean view.
- good facilities.
- BUT: found a dead BUG in my sheets. Looking for bed bugs yielded in a negative result though, but I had two red bites the next day.

2nd and 3rd night:
- upgrade to ocean view room.
- this time the sheets were very clean.

Having stayed here with 2 friends in 2009 I thought it would be great to come back...then, we had an elevated room with views of Diamond Head and partial ocean views, it was freshly renovated and the room was large and airy. This time around, I thought of lashing out on a complete ocean view room for the other half and I. Check-in was effortless and friendly and ahead of the 3pm check in time. The room though was very dated. With no disrespect to the staff, this hotel is a bit of a dive. The hotel is clearly a 60s or 70s refurb, the ocean front rooms are tiny and the balconies awful. We were on L8. The bed was hard, the bathroom paint job dated...overall a massive miss. The breakfast is okay if you like lots of sugary donuts, bread and muffins. The fruit is hard and unripe. Expect lots of drunk under 25s and families. For the second visit running I couldn't stomach a swim in the pool, it is too small and too crowded. With a bevy of homeless people to greet you on the street, I couldn't recommend this unless you have very low expectations. The Marriott across the road, or even Astons boutique looking Hotel Renew next door might be an option. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this one needs an overhaul. As for the daily amenity fee, it's a bit rich, when the local taxes added on will take your extras to more than $50 a day!

Room Tip: Don't waste your money on an ocean front room if staying on the low levels. The street noise is...

Aloha Zani, and thank you for returning to our hotel. We especially appreciate feedback from our return guests. We’re sorry your expectations weren’t met this time around. Our 8th level Ocean Front rooms have double balconies and unblocked views of the ocean. They are some of our most popular rooms. To guarantee a higher level, the ‘Select’ category must be reserved. We’re disappointed to see you found the condition of our property as less than satisfactory. Our housekeepers and maintenance staff work hard to keep our hotel inviting and comfortable. Furthermore, we’re currently reviewing what we can do to improve our property during the next renovation.

We do have visitors from all around the world such as honeymooners, families, business people, and college sports groups. The time you stayed with us was right after US high school and college graduations- many of them decided to celebrate in Waikiki. Our security and hotel management have a low tolerance for any individuals or groups that are disrupting other people. It seems that you were affected one of the few times it occurred and we do apologize.

We thank you again for staying with us and for taking the time to review our hotel. We hope you had a lovely time in Waikiki, and we hope to see you again in the future!

My husband and I stayed here at the end of a one month usa trip, we stayed four nights.

On arrival we were met by staff who spoke limited English and not very friendly. However they upgraded us to a partial delux ocean view room.

The room was very cramped and outdated. The place smelt damp.

We were kept awake until 2am every night due to load music from the tiki bar down stairs.

At 6.30am we were awoken by singing (terrible) at the pool area.

The view from our room was very beautiful with the pool and ocean.

The breakfast was very average, you have to grab your food and put it in a little bag then, eat it around the pool. My husband felt like we were a group of seals camped out on the beach.

The breakfast is very high carb and sugar. Not a lot of fruits and healthy options.

They say its a free complimentary breakfast however they charge you about $18 a day plus tax for resort fee.

Positives of the hotel was the free DVD rentals and the proximity to the beautiful beach.

I would say definitely not a hotel for couples who want to relax. There were children and teenagers everywhere.

Most of our couples and honeymooners find our hotel to be comfortable and pleasant. We’re sorry you didn’t find it to be a good fit. The breakfast is included in our resort fee, along with the DVD’s, local calls, use of in room safe, hotel-wide Wi-Fi, and daily newspaper. One of the reasons we have so many families with children is because of the amenities covered, the breakfast especially provides a tremendous value to our families.

We hope you had a nice time in Hawaii at the end of your one month holiday. We thank you for staying with us and hope to welcome you again.

I checked out 15 minutes after checking in. The rooms were super small. The bathroom was old with a dripping faucet and stool that wouldn't stop running. The A/C was set at 65 and it felt like luke warm room temp. I laid on the bed, which was firm and comfortable, but couldn't even begin to take a nap with the noise coming from the sliding glass doors. I don't think they were sealed very well because the whistle from the wind was the deciding factor that I couldn't stay here. Our room was at the end of a hallway which actually turns into a motel feel with the door being outside versus inside a covered hallway, so I think the wind literally went in one door and out the other, even with both of them being shut.
Location seemed wonderful right in the heart of Waikiki and the staff was very accommodating. They didn't even charge me any sort of cancelation fee. The two ladies I worked with during check-in and check-out were both very gracious.
Ended up staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for only $15 more per night and 5 times the ammenities.
