Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel
Ranked #56 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Reviewed February 25, 2013

The Aston Waikiki was a clean, comfortable hotel across the street from Waikiki beach. It's gotten a recent facelift but is still an older hotel. While there is a fresh coat of paint and new furniture, the bathroom was dated. Our room, 611, was west facing with a view primarily of the pool but we could see the ocean. Sunsets were amazing as always. On the downside, right next to the pool is Tiki's which has live music nightly and the poolside breakfast is served beginning at 6:30 AM. We were also right next to the elevators which woke us up at all hours of the night as there is no sound barrier in the wall between the elevators and the rooms.

Overall, we'd stay here again if it weren't for the $18 per day amenity charge and $27 per day parking fee. The $18 includes breakfast and the pool but I'm not sure what else. At the time we were there (Feb 2013) there was no wireless internet in rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool are loud with Tiki's bar poolside and live music nearly 24/7.

Our amenity fee includes breakfast, use of in room safe, daily newspaper, local calls, high speed internet, and unlimited DVD and game rentals via PlayStation 3. Currently WiFi is offered around the pool area and we are also installing necessary equipment in the guest rooms in order to have hotel-wide WiFi. Great location, close to everything. Room was very clean, it does have some age, but, that doesn't matter to me, it is very clean and comfortable. Breakfast buffet is a lot of bread products, out by the pool. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Bri at the front desk. Helped us with activities and places to eat. Absolutely beautiful view from the room. Bottom line, I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view room...

Plusses: Right across the street from Waikiki Beach. Decent breakfast included; rooms have insulated bags so you can take your food and eat it wherever--we ate on the beach.
Minuses: Rooms are old. The front and side of the hotel are noisy, with the tiki bar and the busy streets and the side and front. We were assured our room was quiet and had an ocean view. It was neither--it was right above the bar and with a sliver of ocean from the walk-out deck. Plus, the hallway was not even carpeted all the way to our room--the carpet stopped a few doors before us. We easily got the room changed to the other side, which had a view of Diamond Head and of the ocean, plus it was quieter. It did not have a walk-out deck, though. The staff was good. I would not stay here again, though, until they update. Plus Waikiki Beach itself is incredibly touristy and packed with people.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter but do not have walk-out decks. I would consider looking elsew...

Aloha, and thank you for the review and pictures. Our location is perfect- directly across the street from Waikiki Beach and walking distance from popular venues and attractions. We are a popular tourist resort with a lot of energy.

The Diamond Head side of our hotel has more space in the room in exchange for balcony. The Waikiki side of our hotel has larger balconies in exchange for room space. Our hotel offers many categories at different rates- our most popular category is Ocean Front. These rooms are located on the face of our hotel offering unblocked views of the beach. Our building was built during a time when location and view was priority rather than room size. We are currently reviewing how we can improve some parts of our guest rooms, and we apologize for any inconvenience to you. The carpets end in the hallway where it is open air to prevent weather damage.

We are glad we were able to accommodate your room change request; we do our best to provide exceptional service to our guests. We hope you had a lovely time in Hawaii and look forward to welcoming you back.

We stayed in the Aston for one night to break up our trip from Canada to Australia. We previously spent 5 nights at the Embassy Suites and loved it. While the Aston was cheaper, the room was clean and the beds and pillows very comfortable so it served our purpose. The bathroom could easily have done with a major makeover as it was very outdated. The hotel promotes "Breakfast on the Beach" by providing each room with a cooler bag to place breakfast items in and then guests can either sit by the pool and eat breakfast or walk across the road to the beach. While this sounds like it could work, it fails abysmally! There are no tables set up for guests to sit down and enjoy breakfast, instead guests are made to line up to collect breakfast in styrofoam cups and bowls and then try and find a lounge chair around the pool to eat - it was the worst breakfast experience I have ever had in a hotel!! The morning we had breakfast was very crowded - we ended up having to sit on a small concrete wall and literally try and eat our breakfast before the birds grabbed it first. The amount of wastage is incredible - foam cups and bowls and plastic cutlery everywhere - surely a hotel of this calibre could do a whole lot better than this. A hot breakfast was an extra cost, after we were made to pay an amenity fee on top of our room rate of $18 to cover Breakfast on the Beach and internet access (which is non-existent). A woeful experience. This hotel is definitely not on my list for a return trip to Oahu.

Aloha, and thank you for staying with us. During times of high occupancy we anticipate a busy breakfast. That is why we offer cooler bags, they make for a nice souvenir and are perfect for packing breakfast and taking it to the beach (directly across the street from us), up to your guest room, or take on the road during day time activities. There is a musician and hula dancer around the poolside, as well. We do apologize for any inconvenience to you.

Our amenity fee offers a great value to our guest; it includes breakfast, internet access, use of in room safe, unlimited DVD and game rentals, local calls, and daily newspaper. Our amenity fee is tied at the lowest in Waikiki. We hope you had a lovely holiday, and thank you for the review

My daughter and I really enjoyed our stay here! Great location, friendly staff, good places to eat, free breakfast, free DVD rentals, and good security. Live music at breakfast poolside and at the Tiki bar. Everything was great!

Room Tip: If you get a room above the Tiki bar side of the hotel, you can hear the music.

Aston Waikiki beach was right across street from beach. Not sure why people say hotel is run down. It was clean nicely decorated and views were amazing. Breakfast was great everyday. The bell staff were so helpful and friendly. Beds were comfortable and room was kept very clean by housekeeping staff. Everything about the stay was great! My only complaint would be no wifi in the room. There is wifi in public locations like lobby etc. not really a big deal as there is so much to do in Hawaii who needs Internet! Would absolutely return to this hotel and would recommend for family and friends! Mahalo Aston Waikiki!

upon my arrival to the hotel walking up the stairs to see the pool area that is over a parking structure i believe... you see the front desk right away. i booked the hotel because it offered breakfast on the beach. i"m thinking the hotel will b on the beach, it is across the street from the beach for down side to this place. the only good thing that i can say i loved about the place was the elevator system. you press your key to a pad and it tells you which elevator to go too. i get to the room and it is rather smaller then i was hoping for. the room it self was a bit muggy and had an odd oder to it. i attempted to adjust the A/C and that did not make a difference at all. the small view from the balcony was nice. i went to go take a shower and the tub looks like one of those bath fitter tubs where they just put this piece over everything instead of replacing it all. there was a long black hair on the handle for the shower, as well as the handle was not mounted in the wall it had come loose and would go in when trying to turn on the water. i pulled the shower curtain to find another long black hair there as well. the water was going down very slowly as i showered so it looked more like i was trying to take a bath instead. the towels were not that great when i was drying my self off.the temp in the room still not had changed after my shower. i could no longer stay there so i went to the front desk to check out. my friends had stayed the night before and had a bad experience as well. i went to the modern honolulu instead, and that was an amazing hotel and cost less then the aston.

Aloha, and we are sorry to see that you did not stay with us during your time in Waikiki. Our location is on Kalakaua Ave., directly across the street from the beach. Our 'Breakfast on the Beach' cooler bags are found in the guest room and are perfect for taking breakfast to the beach, or on day time activities. We also have live entertainment during breakfast, a hula dancer and singer.
The comments shared regarding the cleanliness of the room are not typical of our service. Our housekeepers clean the room, and before it is released to a new guest an inspector checks to make sure everything is prepared to properly.
We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations, but we are glad that you were able to find lodging that suited your needs and we hope you had a lovely time in Hawaii.
Sincerely,
