“Best spot on Wakiki”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Our first visit to Hawaii and I don't think we could have picked a better spot . The hotel was awesome, which included breakfast on the beach. What a treat this was with coffee ready every morning by 545 am and food by 630 am. Fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt and donuts were included. If you wanted eggs it was a minimal charge.
Also there are a few restaurants attached - like Wolfgang Pucks(soups, pizza, sandwiches, entrees)subway, stone creamery and the best one Tiki's bar and grill with daily specials and ocean view seating at dinner(sunset)
We had a partial ocean view room which was very nice.
The pool was very small but never used by us as we all went to the beach(14 of us)
Transportation was always easy to find right by the hotel.

Aloha, and thank you for the review and pictures! We are glad to learn you enjoyed staying at our hotel. Yes, many of our guests agree that we do have the perfect location on the Waikiki strip. It is directly across from the beach and a short walk, bus, or taxi ride to most of the desired attractions, restaurants, and shops. We stayed at the Aston Waikiki Beach hotel during our recent visit to oahu for our anniversary. I had heard great reviews of their oceanfront select rooms hence decided to pay the premium .. oceanfront rooms are the most expensive in waikiki and it really does not make financial sense to pay such a big premium for it especially if you are not going to be spending that much time in the room .. since we were celebrating a special occasion we went for the splurge this time around .. we were booked on the 19th floor with a great panoramic view of the waikiki beach strip. I personally think the best view is from the sheraton hotel but that was way out of our budget range.. the room itself was quite spacious .. my only quibble was that the lanai was too close to our neighbors which compromises privacy .. We also found free parking on monserrat ave next to the zoo although it was a bit of a walk at times depending on how far our car was parked .. they charge $18 for resort fee which includes breakfast on the beach (not bad) and wired internet in the room (no, they don't have wifi yet :)) .. their parking is ridiculously expensive hence we decided to skip it in favor of bit of inconvenience to have access to our car .. also their is no coffee maker in the room but luckily starbucks is just around the corner so we got our caffeine fix in the morning w/o any problems .. When we checked in we were a little inconvenienced carrying our luggage up the escalator to the hotel reception area .. their elevator system is a bit of an overkill where you punch in the floor first and then an elevator gets assigned to you .. overall a very clean property right on the beach with great views from oceanfront select rooms .. definitely a winner from a price point if views are important to you !!!

Room Tip: go for oceanfront select on a higher floor to get a panoramic view

We stayed here last summer and it was perfect. We had an easy check in and check out, valet was quick to grab our vehicle, and the free breakfast was good as well. The one thing that I really wanted to share is that my boyfriend hid my jewerly (over $1000.00 in all pieces) in a drawer and never told me. We left to go to the Big Island and I realized my jewery was missing at which he stated oops, I hid it in the last hotel room. I was a wreck when I realized this. I called the Aston and they transferred me to housekeeping and the maid in my room found it all, placed it in a box and they were awaiting an address to mail my belongings to. I feel like that in itself is a reason to come back and stay there again. It is nice to know that there are honest people doing the right thing.

We stayed here a few nights while wanting to be in the Waikiki beach area. It was a great choice for us as we wanted easy access to the beach area but did not want to be right in the thick of it. The hotel was a bit dated but in good repair, clean and we thought quite nice for the price. The hotel was noisy (our room was right across from the ice maker) but you should expect noise when staying in this area (road noise was also an issue).

The breakfast was worth eating - which isn't always true of the free breakfasts. The staff was pleasant and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will return when in the Waikiki area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the sout side and you'll enjoy a view of Waikiki without paying for it.

We found this hotel through Costco travel and would not recommend it as a great place to stay. Be sure you investigate the little "extras" that get charged...$30 a day for parking and $20 a day resort fee with taxes. For a six night stay this added almost $300 to our stay. The rooms were nice and clean and the bed and bedding was excellent. The room was small, but we did not spend much time there. We paid extra for a ocean view which was great but the small lanai only had one chair so we moved one out from the room. Breakfast was adequate, cereal, tropical yogurt, lots of pastries and rolls, coffee, juices, and delicious fruit each day. If you wanted, you could order an omelet for $5 or waffles for $4. There is a Hawaiian singer and hula dancer to welcome you each morning, but we could hear it on the 20th floor, so I can only imagine what it was like for the rooms closest to the pool. Seating is dicey, but if we could not get a seat it was a short wait for one to come available or we took the food to the room. The small coolers were a bonus.

I do not understand the problems with the elevators...to get down to the main floor you hit the star key and you did not need your room key for this, but you did need it to get back upstairs. All you had to do was scan the card and choose the floor and the system told you which elevator would take you there. Very efficient with a minimum wait time.

The location is great if you enjoy the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. There is a wonderful beach right across a busy street, which means you get a lot of street noise, but that is to be expected. There are many ABC stores all around and numerous places to eat. The International Marketplace is very close with shopping and food. The zoo is right around the corner. At night, the restaurant "Tiki's" plays loud music until late in the evening so beware.

The valet is very efficient, we usually did not have to wait more than a few minutes for the jeep, and it was great that we could check out beach chairs and towels to take with us. Beware of Honolulu traffic...it is the worst I have ever seen.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay, but next time would probably book out of the city for a quieter stay and less traffic!

Room Tip: Choose one of their "select" rooms for an ocean view preferably on the upper floors

Aloha, and thank you for the review. Yes, Waikiki is a very busy place! There are many tourists and locals at the beach and shopping during the day time, and at the restaurants and other venues at night. Our location is at the east end of the Waikiki strip, further away from the bigger crowds, but easily accessible by foot or bus to the popular attractions nearby.

We are glad to learn you enjoyed your Ocean Front room, complimentary beach chair and towel rental, and breakfast coolers. Our Ocean Front rooms are the most popular category, as they provide superior views of the beach directly across the street. Our complimentary buffet style breakfast is served each morning; the cooler is found in the guest room upon check in, and intended for use at breakfast. It is a great way to take food up to your room, the beach, or to enjoy poolside with a singer and hula dancer.

We apologize for the confusion regarding the 18 + tax daily amenity fee, and $27 + tax daily Valet charge (only if Valet is used). This information should have been communicated by the third party who booked your reservation with us. We will continue to work with our wholesalers in order to ensure they are explaining the necessary details to our guests.

We thank you for staying with us. Furthermore, we hope you had a lovely time in Waikiki, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Rebecca

Reading recent Tripadvisor reviews after purchasing an affordable travel package ($614 for three nights at this hotel, roundtrip transfers, lei greeting, etc) on-line through Costco Travel almost prompted us to cancel our reservation at this hotel. We are glad we didn't!

The package guaranteed a partial-ocean view room and for whatever reason we ended up on the 14th floor in an ocean-view room with full sweeping view of Waikiki. Our deck chair and its foot rest became a viewing stand from which we ate breakfasts, dinners (take out is nearby) and sipped morning Kona coffee (served at the hotel buffet) and sunset wine.

This 645-room hotel is one of Waikiki's older properties. It underwent renovations in 2002 and again in 2006. Some of the common areas, such as the decking around the pool, as mentioned by others, is in need of replacement. Our room with two double beds didn't have a lot of extra space but it was decked out in bright Hawaii colors, the sheets were as luxurious as those we've had at higher end properties, the carpet new and of bamboo design and the towels were thick. The room was very clean; the maids were there every morning, bright and early.

The hotel also has some nice touches. IWe were provided two cotton kimono robes and newspapers were available every morning at the elevators on each floor.

We are puzzled by some of the complaints we read in earlier reviews of the food provided each morning. The whole concept is to serve breakfast on/in disposable flatware so that you can put it in the insulated bag (a gift from the hotel to keep) and take it, along with hotel-provided beach chairs and towels to the beach just across the street - the hotel's Breakfast on the Beach program. Most guests seemed to want to cluster themselves around the pool however and for that reason hotel management told us they have ordered more tables and chairs to accomodate the morning diners. The food selection included yogurt, cereals, miso soup, rice cakes, fresh pastries, and fresh fruit. Hot items were available for a nominal cost. Kona coffee as well as two additional special blends were also available.

The only 'negatives' we would note were: the lack of wi-fi in the guest rooms (supposed to be installed in February 2013), and, a frustrating room key lock system that required several tries before the door opened. The elevator required the room key to be swiped both at the lobby level and on the floor before it would appear. (If you locked your key in your room you would have been unable to take the elevator to the lobby to get another one).

While others seemed to have negative check-in experiences, we had five people manning the check in computers when we arrived; we stood in line for less than 20 minutes and our wait for our room wasn't more than another 20 (our flight was early - we were at at the hotel before the 3 p.m. check-in). All the staff members we encountered from check in to check out were friendly and efficient.

The location was perfect: across from the famed beach, within a couple of blocks of high end shopping at the Royal Hawaiian shopping center, a block from the Honolulu Zoo and just a bit further to Queen Kapiolani Park and the Aquarium. Bus stops for buses going into Honolulu or away from it were within a block of the hotel. A Starbucks next door provided the free internet access we needed and for those with a sweet tooth, Coldstone Creamery was off the lobby.

Tourism is on the upswing in Waikiki and so are the hotel prices. We found this hotel to be well worth what we paid for it and wouldn't hesitate to buy another package from Costco or to make a return visit here.

Room Tip: If you want guaranteed ocean view book a 'superior ocean view' if available.

Aloha, and thank you for deciding to stay with us, we are glad you had a lovely time at our hotel. It seems like you received a complimentary upgrade upon check in, and we are glad you enjoyed your room!

We are glad to learn you enjoyed our friendly service and hotel. We do apologize for the inconveniences you encountered such as no WiFi, yes; we are in the process of adding it to each guest room and anticipate the completion of the project. We are also sorry about the problem you had with the key. However, pressing the ‘star’ button will take guests to the third floor (lobby) with or without a key card. The key cards are required for going upstairs, which aids in security.

Thank you for reviewing our hotel, and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Hawaii.

I stayed here for the 2nd time in October & I still love the hotel. It has changed ownership since 2008 when I last stayed, but it is basically the same. The location is the best part of this hotel! Ocean front is a must! Get the select rooms if possible, the views are spectacular. The swimming lagoon is great for those who are not strong swimmers & it is usually not too crowded. There are also many more corals and fish by the wall than there was in 2008, so you can snorkle as well. Its not like snorkleing Hanauma Bay or anything, but it is nice to see some fish, etc...
The breakfast line is long, even if you get there when it first starts, it gets very crowded fast! The food is more basic than it was previously. You only get 1 breakfast bag now, which is OK because the choices are more limited. There are some pastries, some fruits, yogurt, cereal & juices. They don't have eggs anymore, which i was disappointed in,but it is free, so..... If you want anything beyond pastries and fruits, you will have to go out, but there are lots of places close by. I found cheeseburger in paradise has a decent priced breakfast & the lines arent as long as others.
The room itself isnt huge, but you dont need a big room with so much else to do! The balcony is by far the best part! Small, but it does the trick!
The bathrooms are outdated however. They are kinda run down & need an upgrade. The floor was kinda dirty as were the walls. the sink & toilet were clean. Showers are old. The shower head actually started spraying everywhere uncontrollably when I first arrived. Maintenance had to come replace it. They also had to replace the light in the room which was making sparks at the base of the plug. They were nice tho & replaced everything that needed to be replaced. I would like to see the whole bathroom just remodeled though, it would really make a big difference for this hotel!
The staff is all friendly. The only issue I had was the room key not being activated properly. Had to go back to the front desk 3 times which was a pain with luggage & super long check in lines. I saw a few other guests having the same issue with the same staff member. He was nice, but I think he just didnt know how to operate the key thing. Once I realized, I went to a different guy & he was able to give me a key that worked with no problem. The cleaning staff were all very very nice & friendly & made sure everything was re stocked in the bathroom; towels, rags, soaps, etc...
Parking is another issue..while valet parking is nice, it is very expensive! It would be nicer to have a self parking option. They are pretty fast at getting your car when you call though. Only once had to wait more than 10 minutes.
I could also do without the resort fee, I think they should apply that toward the price of parking, as most other Aston hotels include free parking or list free parking as an ammenity included in the resort fee.
The check out was nice being able to just drop the room key in a box in the lobby and not have to wait in a line! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Room Tip: Get an ocean front select room for the BEST view!!

Aloha, and thank you for staying with us again. We are glad to see you returned to enjoy our perfect location and Ocean Front room. These rooms are our most popular as they provide exceptional views of the beach directly across the street. Our ‘Breakfast on the Beach’ coolers are found in the room upon check in, and intended for use during morning breakfasts. They are great for taking food to the beach, up to the room, or to enjoy poolside while listening to our singer and hula dancer. We apologize for the maintenance issues in your bathroom, but pleased that they were resolved to your satisfaction with the help of our Maintenance Staff. We are currently reviewing how we can improve our property during the next renovation, and appreciate your feedback. We hope you had another fantastic time in Waikiki, and look forward to welcoming you back!
