“Why pay double when you can the same experience in South Beach?”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for a family wedding. My review of this hotel also includes my criticism of Waikiki as a whole. We flew to Waikiki Beach from the Big Island. It was total culture shock. Why people spend thousands of dollars to travel to Hawaii for a super crowded, dirty, loud, traffic jammed beach area and strip of mega hotels I will not understand. I think it would be cheaper for the same experience in South Beach or Vegas. We are in our early 30's and love the night life as well as the next couple but this just seemed out of place if you're trying to retreat to Hawaii for a relaxing, romantic vaca.
The Aston is located at almost the end of Waikiki Beach. I guess the hotel has had major upgrades. That being said...I would hate to have seen it before. There have been some cosmetic updates but the bathrooms in the rooms and other areas are still outdated and dirty. Our bathroom tile was dirty and cracked in the corners, ceilings had stains. We ended up having to change our room twice. Our first room was really tiny with only double beds. If one person was standing by the fridge the other would have to climb over the first bed to get past. On top of this the A/C was horrible. We called the front desk who sent an engineer who proceeded to clean out what looked like 20 years of compacted dirt off the coils. The air flow was better but not great. We were able to move to a room with a king bed the next day but the A/C was worse. The room would not cool down below 89 degrees! We called and finally spoke to a manager who upgraded us to a junior suite. At least the air was cool in this room and we had some space. We were assured that our luggage would be moved while we are out at dinner. Of course it wasn't upon our return and we had to call again.
This hotel has a decent bar and resto on the 3rd floor. The only down fall is that the live music and club music can be heard all the way up to at least the 16th floor. So if you don't plan on being out partying all night, it's going to be hard to fall asleep over a nightclub.
If you have to stay here you can make it work but I would not recommend this hotel or area for a relaxing Hawaii vacation.

Room Tip: Splurge for an ocean view. It will at least distract you from the noise.

Aloha, and thank you for taking the time to review our property and location. We are sorry that our hotel and Waikiki was unable to meet your expectations. It seems that your overall impression was negative, and we are sorry for that. Furthermore, we hope that you consider other parts of Oahu or other Hawaiian islands in your future travels as each destination has its unique personality. On behalf of the hotel, we are sorry for any inconveniences we caused to you, and we thank you for staying with us.

My husband and I booked our 20th wedding anniversary trip in February 2012 for September 2012. We thought maybe we would get an upgraded room. We did not. But, the lady at the front desk, who was very friendly, did tell us that an upgraded room would be available in a couple of days. We did get moved to a room with a better view the next day. This hotel is okay. The staff were friendly and the room was clean.

The bathrooms need to be updated though and the lanais are very small. We did hear the elevators all night and our room was on the 7th floor right above the pool and Tiki Bar. It was extremely noisy at night and early in the morning when the continental breakfast was being served around the pool. All of the tour buses pick up out front of the hotel, which was very convenient. There are also all types of affordable restaurants, the zoo, and aquarium near the hotel and the beach is literally right across the street.

We would probably stay there again but would want to be on a much higher floor to get away from the pool and the bar. This hotel is very affordable and we didn't spend much time in our room anyway.

Room Tip: Go to one of the higher floors and away from the elevator.

Aloha, and thank you for the thoughtful review. We do have an excellent location, tour buses and public transportation is directly outside our property, and there are many attractions and restaurants within walking distance. We are sorry that your first guest room did not meet your satisfaction, but are glad that we were able to make it better with a room change. Furthermore, we are glad to see you found value in our hotel, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

30 years in the making... Hawaii was meant to be our honeymoon destination but ended up our 30th Wedding Anniversay destination instead,,,, and we were not disappointed. Hotel, ocean front rooms, breakfast and location were all as described on trip advisor. Staff very friendly, rooms well turned out and clean. No mini bar in rooms but with ABC shops on every corner and a fridge in the room there was no need for one. Absolute value for money. Location could not be better, full access to all amenities, shopping and resaurants with the beach right outside your door, what more could you want. In house tour desk very helpful,,,( thanks Ben, you helped make our trip one in a million). Lift system unique but easy to use and added to hotel security. Pool was a refreshing way to keep cool and the morning pool side entertainment was a nice touch. Free internet was restricted to lobby/pool area which was a little inconvenient. Pastries and doughnuts for breakfast became repetative/boring after a few days.. highly recommend MAC 24/7 at the Hilton if you are looking for a bacon and egg breakfast alternative. Our Anniversay was everything we wished for and more, many thanks to my family and Aston Waikki Beach Hotel. We will definately be back,

The hotel is as described by others. Not super nice but reasonable for the price. Breakfast was fine; Morning music fun; Walking distance to whatever you need; and all the staff were nice and helpful etc. However, check this out. My daughter forgot her iPod and didnt realize until we were home in DC (~14 hours later). She said she "left it on the bed." We called the hotel and the staff had turned in the iPod. 4 days later it was back in my daughters hands. Fantastic. Thanks Marcy, Marissa and Marlinda!

Stayed 2 nights, loved the room, location and breakfast! We had an ocean front room, the decor was tiki, tropical motif. The view, priceless! Parking expensive @ $27 per night! Convenient to everything in Waikiki!

How can they call this hotel a resort and want to charge $10 daily resort fee. I am a frequent resort traveler and this is NO RESORT. My group was able to get the fee waived because we booked prior to March 2012 when they implemented the fee, but we had to fight to do so. Found out they use to charge the fee for internet connection but decided to bundle it. Hotel was ok but needs some remodeling. I was very disappointed that there is no WiFi connection in any of the rooms. You can access internet via a cable modem but that is of no use to me when I am travelling with my iPad and not my laptop. Thank God I could add a hot spot connection to my cell phone while travelling. It was inconvenient to have to go to the lobby area to get the Aston WiFi connection. Sprint charged me $20 for a hot spot for a month usage.

Breakfast on the Beach...free every morning....a serious misrepresentation and a total joke! I knew the beach was across the street...no problem but didn't know I had to fight the Japanese for a continental breakfast to put in a cooler bag, get a chair and towel from the hotel and go to the beach for breakfast. I thought it was going to be breakfast served on the beach each day. Waffles and omelets are available but for a fee. If you were later coming to breakfast rather than early, expect to find nothing left and even though it is still in the allotted breakfast time, I was told they would not be replenishing breakfast. Also expect to deal with the numerous homeless when you venture to the beach. I got breakfast only 2 days out of the 5 and was glad to give it to the homeless people hanging around.

The Aston is perfectly satisfactory for what it offers. Its a multi-storied hotel, right on the beach front, its one of the last hotels on the Waikiki beach. The rooms are of reasonable size, en suite, with clean bath tub & shower facility. Although most rooms have tiny balconies, they offer a narrow view of the beach from between buildings. But its simple enough to get out of the hotel, cross the road, and walk on to the beach.
The public areas of the hotel tend to be crowded throughout the day. Thankfully they are located on the lowest 3 floors. The reception, swimming pool and outdoor eating area is on the 3rd floor, and usually has a fare share of children and accompanying adults sitting around the pool throughout the day.
The Plus points:
The best part of the stay was the breakfast, the price of which is included in the room rate. You are provided with a square thermal zip bag in which you can pack your breakfast from the buffet, and take it down to the beach or eat it in your room or anywhere else you like. It is the best way to beat the crowds at the buffet.
The tour buses all stop at the hotel's side entrance for pick-up and drop offs. The tour desk offers excellent service and are most helpful even if you are just asking for information without making a booking through them.
The minus points:
The hotel's internet use service is very expensive.
The lifts (they call them elevators in the US of A) need to be accessed only with the room key to be placed against the sensor, and thereafter, the floor number is required to be punched in. The alphabetical identity of the specific lift to be used by you is displayed on the screen, and you take that lift to the floor you want. Once inside the lift, the doors will open only on that floor, and should you wish to get out on another floor, you can only do so after you leave the lift and re-do the whole process of calling for a fresh lift. I found the whole thing a little confusing initially, but got used to it soon enough.
The hotel's two restaurants don't look very inviting, and its very easy, and probably much cheaper, to step out of the hotel and go to the dozens of eating places tat abound the area.

I recommend the hotel for what it offers, at the price it does .

Room Tip: Rooms on the middle floors are better, as the waiting time for the lifts (elevators) is redduced. Th...
