“Cheap accommodation, decent location, grotty room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

We stayed at the Aston Waikiki Banyan for 3 nights. There were a number of people travelling to Hawaii for a wedding so we rented 8 rooms in total. Ours was definitely the worst (rm 3509). Although the housekeeping staff had done as thorough a job as possible, the room felt grotty. The carpet was pretty disgusting (I couldn't walk in bare feet and wouldn't let my children play on the floor). Exhaust fan in bathroom was full of dust and hair.
Airconditioner was too noisy.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The location is good.

We appreciate your comments and taking the time to share them with us. All the units in our Aston rental program are indivually owned and we are currently working with our owners on a renovation project that will begin in the 4th quarter of 2012 to upgrade the units that need to be refreshed. Thank you for choosing Aston Hotels and Resorts.

We stayed at the Waikiki Banyan 3 nights, walked 1 block every night to catch the sunset, walked to the Honolulu Zoo that was 3blocks away. The things I did not expect where the $10/night (mandatory charge) for the amenities like wireless internet access and free dvd rental, $12/night charge for parking(now days you have to expect that at any hotel especially in Waikiki). The room we had was clean and really nice with kitchenette, separate room and a sleeper sofa. It was really nice for the price.

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us at the Waikiki Banyan. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed your stay. Most properties do charge what they call a "resort" fee for addtional services and the norm is usually $20.00 upwards. Aston properties charge an amenity fee of $10 daily plus tax which includes unlimited Wi-Fi internet service, free DVD and game rentals, in room safe, coffee and tea daily and unlimited local and toll free calls for the duration of your stay. The value of the parking charge is very high and well received by our guests as the average parking charge in Waikiki is $25 per day and higher. Mahalo for chosing Aston Hotels and Resorts.

We were there Dec 2011...third stay but first with Koko Resorts. When you rent with them, you pay for cleaning, and their on-site office offers freebies (boogie boards, beach towels, beach chairs, port-a-cribs, etc). Each unit is individually furnished by the owners. 801 is a fine basic unit. We love the location!

Room Tip: with Koko Resorts, if you want a recently remodeled apt, choose a deluxe.

Although we appreciate your comments, KoKo Resorts is not part of our Aston Hotels & Resorts program here at the Waikiki Banyan. All units at the Waikiki Banyan are individually owned and outfitted by the inidividual owner. for your information, Aston Hotels and Resorts does offer our guests daily maid service and we do have mantenance personel on site to respond to guests requests right away. We do hope you enjoyed your stay in Hawaii.

We were very pleased with the location and size of our room with kitchenette. The room we had 1114 was as about outdated as they get. Carpet was filthy! We requested to change rooms about the third day and did not hear anything back until half way through our trip. By then my husband and kids did not want to pack everything up and switch rooms, so we stayed. Very little kitchen items to prepare basic meals, we had to call down several times just to get "necessities" like toaster, teaspoons, coffee maker. Beds were clean and comfy. The rooms are cleaned daily and vacuumed every three days, although we were there for 13 nights and only had our romm vacuumed once and then again when I requested. We were out before 9 am and many days came home after 3pm and the maid service was just starting to do our room. The BBQ area is nice as well as the hot tub and pool area. Warning..this is definately a family hotel as there are plenty of kids around. Cliff and Chika were helpful, Jason not so much. We needed late check out and he was less than accommadating! Maybe not Aston next time.

We stayed 9 nights in Waikiki and so wanted to have a kitchen, and Waikiki Banyan was a very affordable option. We arrived late at night and were not happy with our room, so called the desk who said they would make a note for the day staff to move us, and next day the desk knew all about this and we moved to a very nice room overlooking the pool area and we were very happy.
Room spacious, full kitchen, and nice lanai. The service from hotel staff excellent and anything we needed was actioned very quickly.A small convenience store located on ground floor proved very useful.Nice coffee shop with WIFI likewise.
It was a short walk to the beach, and bus stop for The Bus right outside.

The hotel has an ideal location. Just one block away from the beach. We had a deluxe ocean view room which had a very nice view of the ocean and the Diamond head. Some of the interiors need updating. We checked in and within 30 min a letter was slipped under the door saying there was no water the next day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No mention was made of it when we checked in. It did not bother us since we were going to be out the whole next day. The cleaning service was less than satisfactory as at least a couple of days we saw the kitchen island dirty even after the cleaning service.

Room Tip: higher floor

This is going to be a comprehensive review based on several factors.
We paid for three units for a week each thru Interval International. This was only available as a getaway vacation not for timeshare exchange. We were pleased with our ability to get three units in one place in July. After we got there we discovered a few things that we did not know ahead of time.
Let me start with the high points: The staff was very helpful even in areas in which they had no control. They were always very friendly when we spoke with them. The location is only one block from the beach which is great. It is walking distance to the zoo and several local places to eat off the normal tourist area.
Unfortunately there were a few issues that really knocked this resort down. First was the statement we heard over and over again from the staff. That is controlled by the Banyan owners association and we have no control over this and this and that. This would begin with the cost of using the parking garage, paying to use golf clubs for miniature golf, and tennis rackets. Having to actually pay to use the BBQ’s, a new low among resorts we have stayed at over the years. Finally the association decided to shut the water off all day to a large section of the units which just happened to fall on the day of our in-laws 50th wedding celebration and their room. So they could not get ready and even shower we had to plead for another room to be able to move them into. The front desk worked hard and finally found us a room. Our room was very dated and showed obvious signs of damage, water, mold, etc. and had been cheaply repaired. The other two units were in much better shape so roll the dice on what you may end up with.
Bottom line: Remember this is called an Aston resort but Aston does not really control this resort they only manage the rental units, the association runs the resort and they let you know every time you want to do something. I’m not saying don’t go there, just be informed when you do.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Waikiki or if not, try to get a room at the end which has limited ocean views.

Thank you for providing your comments on your recent stay with us. Unfortunately, as you describe, Aston Hotels & Resorts only manage the units that individual owners have commited to Aston. We do not operate the Condominium Association which controls and operates the common areas as well as the infrastructure of the building. Although I understand your frustration with certain circumstances that you experienced, we along with the residents of the building as well as other owners who have their condominium units managed by other management companies all must abide by the rules, regulations and decisions made by the Association. The building was built in 1979 and the infrastructure needs to be upgraded to avoid any major problems and the water and drain lines are in need of replacement. They are doing this on a case by case scenario which really does not afford a lot of pre-planning by those affected by the water shutdowns as directed by the Associaiton and is beyond our control. I believe that people that live in a condominium enviroment can better understand how the Association operates. Our staff does it best, given whatever cirucumstances we encounter and does try to service our guests to the best of their abilities whenever possible. Mahalo!
