“Good location and inexpensive”
Reviewed January 22, 2010

My friend and I needed a good but cheap place to stay for one night on each end of our trip to other islands in Hawaii. I found a good deal on the internet and tried this place. We had good service. The rooms are an adequate size, comfortable, clean, secure. I'm curious about some of the negative reviews here - not sure what the writers expected. It's not a beach front 4 or 5 star but I wasn't looking for that. Unless you like street noise get a room on the back side of the hotel (great views of the inland mountains from the 11th floor).

We stayed Dec 21-29 2009.

Location: Our exchange rate at time of booking meant a hotel on/very close to the beach was a little out of budget. Originally thought we might have a bit of a hike to the beach from the Aqua Aloha but were very pleasantly surprised! A few minutes pleasant easy walk with all the beach gear and a 6 year old (who generally didn't like walking far at all in the heat!)
Right next door to the Food Pantry supermarket, and our favourite inexpensive eating spot "Perrys Smorgy" was on the same block. Very close to bus stop. For our purposes we couldn't have got a better location.

Hotel amenities/services: Loved the lobby with the surf videos playing behind the desk. The free breakfast was much appreciated, yes it does finish at 8.30 so we needed to be organised but were happy with that. Pancakes, donuts, toast, fruit. Can't quite remember if there was cereal as well (getting mixed up with other hotel breakfasts!) You do need to show your room key to enter the breakfast room, we saw a couple of guests argue about this but I think it is a fair enough rule. Only possible downside to breakfast was that at the time we stayed it got very busy, by 8.15AM both the breakfast room and lobby seating got quite full but you weren't able to take food away to your room.
Didn't use the pool but it looked fine.
Weekly Managers reception with free drinks was a nice touch.
No problems with room keys, elevators etc.
We loved how this hotel was smaller than a lot of others and seemed quite peaceful compared to the full on activity in the lobbies of the larger hotels.

Room: We had a triple all-in-one room on 12th floor and were thrilled with it, couch plus table, kitchenette and enough play space to keep my daughter happy. Room was clean and well maintained, saw one cockroach on first night but he didn't return and I know a few bugs are to be expected in a tropical climate (according to the guest book the hotel will attend to them if reported). No noise issues at all (apart from a few sirens going past which is par for the course in a city).

Staff: All of the staff whom we came in contact with from housekeeping to maintenance to reception were friendly, approachable and helpful. We had a lovely chat to Mark the maintenance man who came in to change over the lightbulbs (he should have an official guest relations job!). Our housekeeping lady was lovely and always arranged my daughters toys nicely on the bed (daughter really appreciated this!) The desk staff were very helpful with sightseeing/attraction information. The lady on the desk ordered a taxi for us to get to the airport and she ran through our schedule with us to make sure we would be there with time to spare (this was a few days after the security breach which led to extra checks and longer lines at airports). On a prior trip to Hawaii we had stayed at a hotel (since demolished to make way for a new shopping complex) whose desk staff were quite indifferent towards us so we were really appreciative of the Aqua Aloha's employees.

We would definately stay at this hotel again, even though the exchange rate has picked up considerably!

I found a package on Orbitz for the Aqua Aloha Surf Hotel and came here for a long weekend with my boyfriend.

Compared to all the other hotels in the area, it's soooo cheap! It's only a 5 minute walk from the Waikiki beach and serves a fairly decent free breakfast. (Pancakes, toast, muffins, fruit.) Unfortunately the price and the breakfast are pretty much the only saving graces, because the hotel is horrendously run down.

We booked the the cheapest room in the hotel and it was advertised as having a queen bed. After checking in we walked into a tiny room with a tiny full bed and a crappy, dingy stand-up shower. The room was on the 3rd floor and we were woken up at 6am by next door construction and traffic noises from a nearby busy road.

This wasn't going to fly, so for 20 bucks/night we upgraded to the deluxe suite on the 14 floor. This room was considerably quieter, had a normal queen bed and a balcony. It also had a very stained couch, very stained drapes, a dingy bathroom, and a toilet that wouldn't stop running. Since this was one of their nicer rooms, I'm assuming all of other rooms in the hotel are in a similar state.

So if you are broke and just wan't to go Hawaii, this place is for you. However if you care about things like mysterious stains, noise, and running toilets, then I suggest looking elsewhere.

Cons:

My husband and I stayed here for our 5 year anniversary. It was less than to be expected. It seemd that there were good reviews on trip advisor but the rooms were quite small & looked like they were poorly re-done. (baseboards chipped, missing. tiles chipped, etc.) We had a view of the roof and only about 300 square feet of room counting this bathroom. Food is very expensive in Honolulu as well (but we knew that ahead of time) The fitness area is 3 pieces of equipment hid behind a screen in the lobby. Pool was tiny as well. We purchased our trip on nwa.com so I suppose since we had already paid they stuck us with the crumby rooms

Pros: great free breakfast (but it ended at 8:30 so you better be an early riser & you can't take food to your room) The location was relatively nice, only a couple of blocks to the beach but there were so many sirens I felt like I was staying in New York City.

Overall I would spend a couple hundred more and stay at a nicer place.

Briefly reading some of the reviews i was curious as to what people really expected when staying here for $60/nite? My girlfriend and i traveled here on a shoestring budget and didnt expect anything... we were highly impressed.
The location was a short 5 min walk to Waikiki beach, the hotel was a small, but had everything we were looking for. Who comes to Hawaii to stay in a hotel room?? We had clean sheets, hot water, a NICE breakfast every morning and great service.

We are in our mid 20's and the last thing we are looking for is a high end hotel... we would much rather spend our time outside enjoying Hawaii, the beach, the food, the people...............................

As long as all you just need in waikiki is a clean room and a bed to sleep on, the aloha surf is perfect. Centrally located in Waikiki, you can't beat the price in the area. I would recommend this as a budget option if you want a quiet alternate to the hostels in the downtown area. Cleaning ladies also very friendly!!
