For years, when traveling to Honolulu, I have stayed at the Pagoda Hotel. It is inexpensive, compared to other properties, well run and nice. It is a favorite of local families, traveling on a budget.
At last, the opportunity to stay at the Ala Moana Hotel. There is the main tower of the hotel, presumably more desirable, and then the back tower, accessed around the back side of the main lobby. That was where my nearly $200/night landed me. Unlike the review by Ksmui, I did not receive an upgrade. The room was small, and not recently updated at all. The lanai/patio was literally non-existent; only a railing with a sign reading, "do not hang towels from railing". The railing separated the room from the rooftop and the view was overlooking the Ala Moana Shopping Center parking lot. Granted, I could see the ocean, not easily but it was possible. The staff was quite competent and we received especially good service at the front desk. Readers may note that this is my first, "less than stellar" review. I had high hopes of the Ala Moana and they were not met. However, I am willing to try again, focusing on a room in the main tower. Aloha.More
