We stayed here for two weeks and everything was perfect. The food in the restaurant is excellent, we ate most of our meals here. The service is good and the employees are friendly. Our room had an nice view of the ocean, everything worked the way it should and the bed was comfortable. The location of the hotel is far enough from Waikiki Beach that you can escape the crowds, but when you want to party, play and shop you can walk to downtown Honolulu. This is a great boutique hotel, we will stay here everytime we return to Hawaii.

Stayed here for business on April 26-28th, middle of the week. The hotel was not full. My 6th floor room was tiny and dumpy. Seriously, it looked like a Motel 6 room and had a small balcony which overlooked a parking lot. The bed was full size, not queen and the bedding was old and worn, like the rest of the room. The sink, single, made a horrible noise when you turned the water on and the air conditioner also made a racket. I called down and asked for a more newly renovated room, something 1980's circa, at least. They offered to move me, for an additional $80. So, I tried to stick it out but the first night, the air conditioner was so loud that it woke me often and I finally went down to the desk to complain at around 4:30 a.m. The guy said they didn't have another room in my category, his words, but offered to move me, for an additional $140. Seriously? The customer service was absolutely horrible. The front desk folks seemed to care less whether you enjoyed your stay or were comfortable. The real kicker was, I had asked a local colleague to stay at this hotel, as well, so that we could work. She's a local and got a rate that was $60 less than mine and her room was completely renovated. Unbelievable. Everywhere in their lobby you see the trip advisor sign and logo, so they're very proud of their reviews. On another note, the bar and restaurant were great and the guy selling the shell necklaces in the lobby was very kind.

The New Otani Kaimana was a letdown; we have stayed at their property in Beijing, which was fantastic. However, the Kaimana located at the end of the beach disappointed at almost every turn. From the check in where the desk was unable or unwilling to provide information on the local bus routes, to the Parkview room with dead bugs in the bathroom. One of the biggest disappointments was the lack of beach front sitting, except for the restaurant, which was beautiful but only open at meal times, no pool or lanai...nothing! The hotel is quiet, but there are other, nicer properties in the same area.

On earlier visits to O'ahu, I've stayed at the enormous 'chain' hotels; all usually quite good but massive and impersonal and with a jaded staff. The New Otani is very highly to be recommended:
- the location is wonderfully restful at the eastern end of Kapiolani Park, as it were exactly 'under' Diamond Head Crater. Thus it's far from the noise and traffic of the main drags of Waikiki. It's right on the beach and has perhaps the best one of Waikiki. Indeed, it's about 20 minutes walk from the nightly high life of Waikiki... but if you're not into that kind of thing...
- the service is absolutely impeccable and more: it's downright friendly, efficient and helpful. The hotel is quite moderately sized compared to the Chain Palaces, and the staff quickly know you by name and inclination.
- my room - a single - was kept spic-and-span. Though the furniture was a bit 'dated' and 'tired', everything functioned very well. Though a 'cheap' deal, my room's pleasant balcony even had some sea-view. Excellent light-occluding curtains; and all electronics one might wish.
- the in-house restaurant Hau Tree Lanai serves amazingly delicious breakfasts; and as far as I can judge the 'up-scale' Miyako Japanese Restaurant has got to be one of the very best in town. My dinner was absolutely superb.
Highly recommended for service, location, and in-house services!

Stayed here for the second time (first was more than 15 years ago!) Location near Diamond Head is very nice if you want the quiet end of the beach, as we did. A little hard to find through Waikiki's one-way traffic grid if you arrive after dark! We reserved the basic room but were upgraded to an efficiency room in the annex, which had the advantage of cooking facilities (minimal) and a partial ocean view but the disadvantage of stairs. On balance, it was very good. The annex rooms were comfortable & everything worked, but could use a little updating. I'd recommend this for a short to medium stay on Oahu, but if you're planning a long visit you're probably better off renting a condo. I'd return again on a short-stay basis. Oh, and the Hau Tree restaurant is really good, especially for breakfast. Try the seafood omelet.

Stayed at this wonderful hotel the end of December and beginning of January for 12 nights. We had our 16 yr. old grandson in the room next to us. The staff are so special to us and our family. Wonderful, helpful and so accomodating. My husband and I are returning again this June w.o. grandchildren to try one of the renovated rooms. Seems like the New Otani is the only place we go anymore. We always know we will be well taken care of and greeted with that special "Aloha" spirit. Thanks New Otani, keep up the great work. Also, a special thank you to all of you at the Hau Tree Lani. Can't wait for my french toast with macadamia nuts breakfast every morning.

I have been going here since my first trip to Hawaii in 1995 and never looked at another hotel. Although amenities have reduced and, for some reason, the New Otani Club management back in Japan have decided it's better business to charge club members more than the occasional stayer, there is no doubt that this remains a gem on the periphery of the craziness of Waikiki. Local management has been stable, promotions are made from within existing staff and everyone is treated like family. Indeed, the words I hear each time I ull up in the cab for another visit, I hear "Welcome home"" Ah, yes.................

Room Tip: Book online.
