Best Western The Plaza Hotel
Ranked #55 of 84 Hotels in Honolulu
Reviewed March 21, 2010

We spent two nights in the hotel. First night was upon arrival into Honolulu and the second was after a short sightseeing trip in Honolulu before flying out onto one of the other islands.

The hotel is fine. It first does not have 20 floors as another reviewer stated. It has 12 floors and we stayed in room 1120 on the 11th floor. This room overlooks the airport from one window and the bay behind the airport and Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach on the other side since its a corner unit. Its not overly quiet, but it was fine. The room is furnished ok, nothing spectacular but it serves the purpose. Good bed to sleep on.

The A/C cannot be turned off unless you put the temp to 90 degrees but it was just fine for us at 65 degrees throught the night,

The staff was very friendly overall and again I do not get what the people are complaining about the staff. Perhaps they need to be nice to them and the staff will be nice to you as well since they helped us out as much as possible and absolutely no issues here with any of the people we came across..

The restaurant though we did not try it had decent food (we got some muffins for breakfast) however the price I think was a bit high for the muffins,

My partner and I booked to stay in this hotel due to its close proximitey to HNL international airport so that we could get as much rest as possible before our long journey back to the UK - big mistake!
On arrival we were greeted with anything but the warm ahola welcome we had come accustomed to on Oahu. The receptionist simply grunted at us and gave us our room key. Up on the 20th floor the rooms are nicely decorated and on first impressions we thought we'd chosen a decent enough room to get us through the night. However, as the temperature of the room could only be described as freezing I tried to turn the air-con off but found that I couldn't! Not only was it freezing but it was also very loud for a bedroom system. We called for maintenance to come and investigate it but were told on their arrival that because the hotel has one large system it can not be turned off. Instead he opened the vents wider (to stop the rattling noise) which only made the temperature colder. We then requested that we had a different room, where the air-con was quiter, only be moved to another one with the same problem. We were then told that they had no other rooms available before we were eventually told that we could move again to another room situated in an annex near the pool which had a separate air-con system which could be turned off. To my relief this was indeed the case. However, the room which clearly was an ex-smoking room and was rather tired and quite dirty was situated right under the Nimitz Highway which links the main H1 highway across the island and so the noise was even worse than in the main building! By this point we kind of gave up as we only had 5 hours before we had to get up and so decided to use the hotels free computer at reception to pre-check-in for our flights. Unfortunately the computer wasn't working either and so we had to get up even earlier to manually check-in at the airport. I'm not normally one to complain and may have just put up with the first room had the staff not been so unfriendly and unhelpful with us. We had even paid for a 'deluxe' room in order to finish what was a fantastic trip to Hawaii on a high, however, we both feel completely ripped-off and disappointed with this Best Western hotel and will never stay at one of there branded changes again, due to fear that we will have another expensive horrible night awake! My advise to fellow travellers who like their sleep is to avoid this hotel at all costs. A stay in Waikiki with a short taxi ride in the morning would be a much pleasanter idea!

Because of airline cancellations and delays, we did not get into Oahu until late at night the day before we had to leave for Kauai in the early morning. We wanted something clean and close to the airport at the last minute. The Best Western Plaza offered that and more. A free shuttle came and picked us up within minutes of arrival at the airport and was ready to drop us off in the morning! The staff was friendly and competent. We did not use any of the additional facilities that the hotel offered (pool, restaurant, etc.) because we were only there for a quick overnight.
This hotel is an excellent bargain for travelers who need a nice clean place to stay close to the airport with a free airport shuttle. Our base rate for the room was $99.00 - very reasonable for Oahu. I would not stay there if my main intention was to go to the beach, but it is perfectly fine for those overnight stays near the airport.

On a delayed flight, we were put up here by the airline :( Big lineup at front desk, ended up in a room 50 feet from 3 level freeway - had to wait in line again to ask for another room - big line up of people at the only 1 computer stand up kiosk in the lobbty reorganizing their lives with the flight cancelled - telephone was blocked - store was closed so had to go to gas station down the street past some dubious characters - breakfast in restaurant was average food after 30 minute wait - one waitress - computer died in the morning and no one was able to get it going again before our flight- very frustrating layover in this place.

My husband and I had an unfortunate 16 hr layover in honolulu so we decided to stay at a hotel for a few hrs, wash up and return to the airport. We first tried a hostel that the airport recommended (which was the grossest place i've ever set foot) and upon returning to the airport decided to spend $100 to stay at the best western (also recommended). We were only there to take a shower and a short nap, but we found pubic hairs in the bed and shower. We made sure to nap on top of the covers. When we brought attention to the owner about the hairs he apologized and said he'd send someone up right away to change the sheets....but no one ever came. We also asked for some shampoo and was promised someone would bring it up....but again...no one. I don't have as much problem with the bad service, but spending $100 (their half-day rate) and getting pubic hairs in your bed and shower???? DONT STAY HERE!

Flew into HNL at night from the east coast with a flight to Kauai the next day and needed an airport hotel. Read the reviews online but selected the BW anyways. I wasn't expecting a lot, but the BW Plaza hotel was perfectly fine, actually I was pleasantly surprised. Had a room on a higher level and didn't really hear much freeway or airplane noise. The renovated room was quite large and the bed was surprisingly very comfortable. I've stayed in a lot of hotels and this wasn't a Starwood 'heavenly' bed but it was pretty good. And there was no hair, blood, scuff marks or anything that other people have apparently found. Same for the floor and bathroom. And I don't know where some people live but the neighborhood is not scary at all- a few fast food, sushi, liquor store and Starbucks are within a 3 min walk. Would definitely stay here again if needed. Note: at HNL you need to be sure to call the hotel to have the van circle around and the rooms don't have wireless (just in the lobby) but supply an ethernet cord for access.

On check in I asked if we would receive Best Western points and was told yes. Our family had two rooms and stayed for almost 2 months. Waited a couple of weeks after checkout to see if points showed up on our account-they didn't. Submitted an online request-again denied points. Spoke with the "military liaison" at the hotel-still no points. Wrote a letter to Best Western-still no points and a form letter saying we weren't eligible for points because of it was a government rate (which cost the government about $25 more per day/per room than if we had reserved online). Gave up the fight and decided to post a review to let others know.
