“Great dinner!!”
Reviewed November 15, 2013 via mobile

It was our last night in Waikiki and headed to Roy's.

Service - the service by the staff was great. Food was served without delay. Didn't felt rush.

Food - Took advantage of the prix fix menu. Appetizers was sooo good! The tuna and the spring rolls..yummy! The spare rib was a bit salty. We had the macadamia crusted opaha and the short rib as the main entrees. Portions are like 7oz and was very filling. The opaha was soo good!! Short rib was just okay. For dessert, we had the chocolate soufflé. Soo rich and delicious!

“Excellent dishes and good service but exceptionally noisy”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

On our experience, Roy's deserves its reputation for its food. We made a reservation as it is always extremely busy. In terms of the restaurant itself, there is very little to be said other than the fact that it is quite unexceptional. The kitchen is behind a glassed screen/area and then the restaurant itself whilst nicely laid is something you can find anywhere. A particular feature of the restaurant is the number of covers which is extremely high. On our experience, large and very large parties of diners are accommodated at long tables with tables of two and four and six interspersed around them. Accordingly, the noise levels are extraordinarily high and if you find that a problem, this is not the place to you. It was only towards the end of our dinner that the larger parties began to drift away and in consequence the noise level dropped slightly. Other contributors to Trip Advisor have commented on the noise levels and our experience was exactly the same. The tables are very hugger mugger and whilst that can add to the experience can also detract. In our case, it detracted.

Turning to the food, it really was excellent. In what is quite a large menu, we would advise that it is best to choose from the collection of Roy's most popular dishes. It really was very successful and although all the dishes were good we would particularly recommend the Classic Trio which includes three fish dishes which were really excellent including butterfish. The Szechuan ribs were also very good. The service was friendly, polite and efficient although the was a slight slip in the dishes at one stage, but that can happen anywhere and the error was immediately accepted and corrected.

The wine list is gargantuan and unnecessarily so as most diners seem to opt for water or beer. It simply does not need to have a wine list of that size unless of course you are going to be assisted by a sommelier. We were not assisted in our choice of wines and it is a bit of a chore to have to work one's way through pages and pages to look for something decent and reasonably priced. They are there in the list, but it needs a careful search.

All in all, we enjoyed this restaurant which is high on food quality but its atmosphere is nothing special.

(1)If you are hard of hearing or do not enjoy dining in noisy conditions, this is not the restaurant for you.

(2)It is essential to make a reservation.

“A Great Meal Experience”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

During our latest vacation we had the chance to eat at Roy's. One of our tour guides said it was a good place to eat, so we made a reservation. Since this was our first time at this restaurant, the people who waited on us were very helpful. Our waitress answered all of our menu questions with knowledge and insight. My wife had a local fish dish which was very good. I had braised short ribs. They were wonderful. They could be cut with a fork they were so tender. For dessert I had the chocolate soufflé. If you like chocolate, this is a must. Overall, it was a great dining experience which was well worth the money. We were there the first week of November.

“I don't recommend it, unless...”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

you want to have a tiny little bit of food for a very high price! The ambiance was nice (until the pre-wedding dinner party showed up and were seated right next to us); the wait staff was pleasant. But honestly, I had a really hard time finding anything on the menu (http://royshawaii.com/locations/roys-waikiki/menu/) that appealed to me, for anywhere close to a reasonable price. The food, what there was of it, did taste good. One of my friends had recommended the butterfish -- $20+ for the "small" portion netted about 2 bites of the fish (that's really all that was on the plate); it came with about a tablespoon of "black rice" that looked like fish eggs or something. You get the point.

I love Hawaii and will be going there as often as possible. I will not be returning to Roy's Waikiki Beach (or any other location).

“roys rip off”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

what hipe about this restaurant, and what a disappointment it was , noisey, terrible service , as I was choking on the raw pea pods , was I told to shell them and only eat the peas no, the dumb giggling waitress was explaining the up your nose menu to my husband , who had to stop her and suggest she get me some water , I ordered a steak that was bland and barely six mouthfuls ,I couldn't wait to leave , it was overpriced, noisey, no atmosphere , and full of would be if they could be people , what a disappointment and I was still hungry after leaving behind over $250us for a medium priced bottle of wine , 2appetisers and 2 mains that I didn't enjoy, wine was ok, no way roy il suggest to reviewers not to waste their time and money, plenty of good other choices, like hula grill ,dukes, california pizza , all value for money.
