One of the big pluses of living downtown or in suburbs of Honolulu is Ala Moana Park and Magic Island peninsula. Watching canoes, fishermen, Diamond Head and the Waikiki skyline are on the East side; Waves, sunbathers, sunsets to die for on the West Side. Protected swimming cove and a jogging/walking path surround it and are frequented by all types of people walking, jogging, biking and gazing at the changing seascapes. Endless sunsets are the show of the day, and the surf crashing onto the tip of the island makes it alive. The pathways and grassy areas are badly! in need of upkeep and care, however, due to heavy use. Signs that say NO DOGS should be obeyed but are not; after all the grass is used to sit and eat meals upon! Magic Island will not be magical for long unless these needs are met.

I like that it is a perfect place to walk, watch people fishing and the cove is awesome. The ocean is spectacular!

Magic Island is an amazing beach. I just returned from my trip to Oahu. We stayed at a friend's condo two blocks away from this beach, and it totally made the trip for me. I love to swim and run; every morning, I would go for a run on this beach and swim afterwards. There is a trail that runners can follow around Magic Island, and you will see plenty of runners going on their morning runs, as I did so every day of my trip. The sands are white, and the waters are clear blue, and best of all, it is away from tourists (the ones that flood Waikiki Beach and turn in it into an over crowded beach). I also took paddle boarding lessons from two guys who were awesome teachers, by the name Matt and Paul. This beach is also located next to a huge shopping mall (3-4 floors) with tons of shops and restaurants. Also next to the beach is a theater, D&B, and an awesome diner that has macadamian nut pancakes. If you want a relaxing time with no crowds, come to Magic Island. The waters are also very calm and clear, so it's a great place to swim, and paddle board, not so much surfing.

It's heavily used by locals, so expect crowds over the weekends. It's a great spot for BBQ and get togethers. There is also a beach that is protected from the waves, so it's a great place to get away from the crowds of waikiki with the family.

Sunseets are a sure thing. Best on Oahu. Great photo spot for Diamond Head in the opposite direction of the sunset.
