Description: For the past 29 years, Island residents and tourists alike have flocked to the Shore Bird, making it one of Waikiki's most venerated institutions. It's the thrill of the grill that has captured guests imaginations and appetites for more than two decades. Shore Bird is not just a place to eat. Shore Bird is an experience where all guests have a lot of fun! Servers interact with our guests and not just serve them. The over all concept is "Aloha". Guests are responsible for for grilling their own dinner entrees but they don't have to be master barbecurers. An experienced grill hand and a large clock help make the process easy. Here's how it works: Steaks and seafood come to the table fresh on a platter with instructions. Guest are able to season and then prepare their entree exactly to their liking . All entrees include the salad bar, which showcases more than 25 items, such as fresh greens, garnishes, fruits, tako poke, rice, bread and pasta.

The place is loud with all the cooking activities. And it was very dark and I see other people taking out their cell phones to light up so they can see the menu. Then I had to cook my own meal which took longer than it required. Also, I was a bit uncomfortable to be standing next to a hot grill with 20 others trying to cook.

Luckily the chef helped me so I can finally eat my fish. The quality of meats and fish is good, very good. I just was not comfortable with standing around a hot grill, cooking. I found the environment to be not relaxing at all.

Our server is very nice and would do anything to help. If you like meats and don;t mind cooking it yourself, this is a place for you.

After a day on Waikiki Beach we decided to dine someplace close to our hotel, and this restaurant was right inside. We went dress casual because we were unaware we would be preparing our own food over a hot grill.

Our server (Jamie H) was excellent. She explained everything to us, since we were obviously confused. She made recommendations that we order our main course and help ourselves to the salad bar. She said she would check back with us or we could give her a wave when we were ready for her to bring our selections out. The salad bar was loaded with not your usual fare. Many local salads, tora root (which poi is made from, but sooooo much better served in root form), and a pasta dish of the day. We enjoyed our salads and Jamie was around and chatted with us several times, while she was obviously busy. This was so appreciated.

Then came time for us to grill our steak. She gave us recommendations as to how the heat is distributed on their grill, when to turn depending upon the desired rare, medium or well done. She also mentioned there were seasonings by the grill if we liked and suggested we grab some fresh pineapple and bread from the salad bar to grill while waiting for our steak to cook. This was an excellent suggestion! The grilled pineapple and bread were amazing. The steaks were also good. The only negative is we were unaware we would be cooking our own meals, if we had known, we would not have worn our better clothes which smelled of smoke afterwards. You also need to be prepared that some cultures are just rude and don't mind cutting you off, taking things away from you, or blocking your way. There were cooks at the grill to try to help prevent a lot of various things from happening and give you a fresh plate to put your grilled food on, but they do not do the cooking for you. We were hot and sweaty afterwards. We also skipped dessert because there was no room left!

We would return here again, but would dress relaxed and be prepared to grill. It is a fun thought and we made the best of being unprepared which is mostly our own fault. When you read "Where you are the chef" they mean it literally.

This location is directly on Waikiki Beach and can get pretty crowded at sunset. Enjoy!

You must go for the breakfast buffet at least once while you're in Waikiki. You can find a buy 1/get one 50% off coupon on their website. It is a little pricey, but worth it. It has just about anything you could want for breakfast and the ocean view is wonderful!

We were wandering down Waikiki Beach and decided to duck in here for a couple of drinks. We sat at the bar and was amazed at how quickly the bartenders could make mai tais from scratch. The crowd here was animated and very beachy. It was kind of noisy, but a fun noisy.

We visited here a couple of days later for breakfast as part of a timeshare presentation. (not for this hotel) The breakfast buffet was great with lots of fresh selections and very tastefully presented.

Since we were staying in the hotel, we ate two breakfasts and two dinners there - mainly because they were good value and very tasty. Breakfast offers a buffet with excellent muesli and fruit, scrambled eggs and bacon with carved ham and turkey - the coffee is fine and the juices very good. Keep your receipt as it includes a reduction on your next meal there. We ate the Sunset Special which is $19 for a large steak, a salad buffet and happy hour $3.50 margaritas - what a gem! You cook the steak yourself which is fun - they give you directions and a chef is there to help you - the salad bar is good with delicious potato salad, coleslaw, bean salad, hot chilli con carne and a variety of other salads - I think it is excellent value - not fine dine but really good tucker at a good price. There are fancier places with Michellin stars but this gets my star for value, view and variety.
