Review of Wai'oli Tea Rooms

Wai'oli Tea Rooms
Reviewed January 18, 2014

A very enjoyable experience. The food was delicious, the tea refreshing, and the atmosphere was so pleasurable. The Salvation Army runs the place - so you are also doing good for the community by eating here. You may want to bring a sweater with you, because there is a slight breeze, while you are looking at plush greenery, and shaded by covered lanai. I will be returning.

Wai’oli Tea House – Monoa Rd, Monoa, Honolulu.

Set in the hills up behind Waikiki (about 20 minute drive) is Wai’oli Tea House. A historic building and important part of Honolulu’s history. It was built in 1909 by the salvation Army as a children’s home. By the 20’s it was a home for unwed mothers who needed vocational education so a tea room was set up.
Now the tea rooms are leased out as a private business.

The building is an amazing old stone cottage set among the most magnificent jungle / forest / bushland. Worth the trip just for the trees. It’s a great step back in time and an escape from the tourist hustle of Waikiki.

The food was great and very well priced. The tea was amazing. Fine bone china, a huge trolley full of teas to select from.

I am sad that I didn’t know about the ‘High Tea’. You need to book in 24 hrs ahead for an amazing tea. Cakes and pastries made to order. $19 a head for a huge spread.

There is also the wishing well made famous by Elvis in the movie ‘Blue Hawaii”.

This is my MUST DO ACTIVITY FOR HONOLULU. Do yourself a favour – make the effort and get there.

NOTE – Don’t listen to the rumours that it is closing own. There will be a short closure in October 2012 but will then be open for business again.
