We had a simple lunch with pasta and pesto and another pasta with a red meat sauce. Both were tasty and served hot ( the first duty of food is to be served hot). They should give up on the bread - sort of an small Wonderbread thing served with butter - no olive oil in sight. The wine selections were nice, but wayyyy overpriced. The pasta was good, but the bread and wine (sorry to sound so communal about it all) lowered the rating.

Verbano on Kokohead Ave.
A well-respected longtime Italian neighborhood restaurant. On our first evening there they didn’t have it. Neither in service nor in food. The appetizers showed up before we had finished our drinks. Escargot, unidentifiable small pieces of something surrounded by an unidentifiable white sauce with no flavor. All came lukewarm. Calamari frits, looked and tasted like French Fries at McDonalds. Having some premonition they are rushing, I sent word to the kitchen to slow down with the main course. It still arrived shortly but lukewarm. Calamari, 2 decent slices with pasta which was tough. Hardly any taste. Seafood combination, not much seafood, not much flavor, plenty of pasta.

The service, mixed. Our waiter must have come straight from a Chinese restaurant. Take the order, bring the food, bring the check. End of it. No personality, not a single pleasant word, barely a thank you or good-bye. When the perfunctory question came, “Is everything OK?” He didn’t wait for an answer, just walked away. Wasn’t around too much either. The only good thing, besides the Italian beer, was a young bus-girl, Tiffany. Pretty, happy with a smile, always glad to help.

After the main course we left, went to Whole Foods for a good desert and a nice bottle of wine to finish the evening at home.

There must be a bad feng shui in their new place. It’s the third restaurant in that place in about that many years.

This is our favorite italian restaurant, although we hadn't been to this location since they opened the Pearlridge restaurant several years ago. They've moved from their original loaction on Waialae Ave and are now up the hill and around the corner at 1126 Koko Head Avenue. Parking is a little easier now, with the less-crowded municipal lot in the back.
I usually order the Chef's Seafood Piatto (pasta), but had a craving for osso buco, so ordered it instead. Great choice!! It was divine!! Tender, full of flavor, and complimented perfectly by the linguine on the side. My wife ordered the Chicken Olio, which she loved but could not finish.
It was worth the extra drive to get reacquainted with and old friend, and we will have to split our future visits between the two locations.

First, let me say that Verbano has moved from Waielae St ... Two blocks (Diamond Head) to Koko Head St...Turn right..one block up Koko Head..beside the Post Office. Secondly, we are acquainted with Verbano on King Street and have eaten there as well. Both Restaurants are great...the one in Kaimuki on Koko Head Ave we enjoyed on Jan 20. The wait staff and cheff appears to be family and owned by the King St. restaurant family as well. Every one was personable, prompt, and efficient. The bruschetta was a little different than typical...but delicious. The menu was extensive and selections difficult to choose because so many sounded so good. Pasta was featured with/complimented every combo and was hand made and perfectly "al dente". The sauces were freshly made and delicious. The salads were fresh, cool, and crisp. Bread was hot out of the oven...and service was speedy. Our server poured our wine choice throughout the meal wit a cordial smile. I loved my meal, and my family loved their choices...one of which was a delicious Puttanesca that was perfectly seasoned and perfectly prepared. We will eat here next time we visit Hawai'i.
