We are enthusiastic and unwavering fans of Roy's in SW Florida, and felt the need to make the "pilgrimage" to the original Roy's. We were not expecting the shopping center location; we had anticipated a classic beach setting with palm trees, ocean breezes, and big island vistas. Anyhow, plentiful parking is adjacent in mall lot. Restaurant has large windows overlooking ocean, but since Hawaii sunset was 7:16pm , we totally missed the view! Also, dining room and open kitchen are on second floor. The whole setting is pretty urban, so we had to quickly readjust to the downtown ambience. Entrees and desserts were similar to FL menu, but there seemed to be more appetizers to choose from. Our seafood entrees were nicely presented, with more artistry than typical. Abalone appetizer was not good-rubbery, and crumb topping was broiled to point of burnt. Our server was very nice, but the manager did not stop by. Our table, although reserved by resort concierge weeks earller, was not a premium table-we were right on the aisle and adjacent to a post, beneath the a/c controls! We felt slight disappointment at the whole experience. like finding an old friend's personality has changed.
