“Our Pilgrimage to the Original Roy's”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

We are enthusiastic and unwavering fans of Roy's in SW Florida, and felt the need to make the "pilgrimage" to the original Roy's. We were not expecting the shopping center location; we had anticipated a classic beach setting with palm trees, ocean breezes, and big island vistas. Anyhow, plentiful parking is adjacent in mall lot. Restaurant has large windows overlooking ocean, but since Hawaii sunset was 7:16pm , we totally missed the view! Also, dining room and open kitchen are on second floor. The whole setting is pretty urban, so we had to quickly readjust to the downtown ambience. Entrees and desserts were similar to FL menu, but there seemed to be more appetizers to choose from. Our seafood entrees were nicely presented, with more artistry than typical. Abalone appetizer was not good-rubbery, and crumb topping was broiled to point of burnt. Our server was very nice, but the manager did not stop by. Our table, although reserved by resort concierge weeks earller, was not a premium table-we were right on the aisle and adjacent to a post, beneath the a/c controls! We felt slight disappointment at the whole experience. like finding an old friend's personality has changed.

“Finest restaurant food, location, service and value”
Reviewed June 18, 2013 via mobile

We went here for our wedding meal. Could write reams of good things but will keep it short.

Made to feel like VIPs by all staff from booking to leaving after our meal. We had a 2 year old with us who within 5 minutes drew on the table cloth with crayons they supplied and threw water over the floor. This didn't phase the staff at all, I have never been somewhere so posh that is so welcoming to young families.

Every meal was perfect and each element tasted fantastic.

Our kids had the child menu and enjoyed every morsel.

I cannot recommend this place high enough and if we are ever lucky enough to get to Oahu again, we will be sure to book a table here again.

“Splendid Celebration”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

We arrived at Roy's mid-afternoon and made a reservation to return at 7:00 pm that evening to celebrate two birthdays and an Anniversary with twelve guests from the Mainland. Even at the late hour, the manager was very accomodating and assured us everything would be ready as planned. The table was ready and delicious cocktails were available upon our early arrival. The group was welcomed and escorted into the main dining area. A prix fix menu had been made available and everyone chose a delicious appetizer, salad and entree. The drinks flowed and our celebration extended into the dining area. The food was creative, fresh and plentiful Hawaiian fusion/comfort food for the soul. Following a lovely dinner and celebration, the manager, personally provided distinctive desserts to seal the three celebrations. It was VIP treatment and a great time by us all while at Roy's.

“Wonderful dinner, beautiful view!”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary here. We were treated very well, the staff acknowledged our anniversary and we felt very special. The food was delicious. Though the price is high it is certainly a restaurant that provides delicious food, ambience and memories which are priceless.

“first bad meal at Roys Hawaii Kai”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Unfortunately, I had my first bad experience with dining at Roys. After we were seated, the table next to us was rearranged to accommodate a party of 12. There was no space for this size party. The wait staff had to serve food and drinks squeezed between chairs and holding the food and drink over head. Since waiters had to squeeze between chairs and tables, they were sometimes backed up trying to get service to tables. This kind of crowding is not expected in a fine dining restaurant. Even the Cheesecake factory has more space than was allocated with this rearrangement of the tables. We would never had sat at that table if we knew that would happen. It totally ruined the entire dining experience. We don't expect to spend $200 on dinner and feel like we are in a fast food chain.

Also for the first time, the food was terrible. The sushi was not a good as a cheap takeout sushi. The escargot was inedible. I tried the new seafood combo and was not able to eat it either. The shrimp was hard and over cooked. The crab cake was all filler and no crab meat. The scallops were undercooked. The iceberg wedge was very good and the homemade blue cheese dressing was great. I had to send back the seafood combo and got the three fish combo and two of the three fish (tuna and salmon) were excellent. The third fish was okay but nothing special. Even the dinner roll was not up to the previous standard of Roys.
