“Ono kine Izakaya”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

Yeah I like Izakaya style Japanese food and this is top 2 or 3 in Honolulu. Did not want to write this because it is already hard to get a reservation and the locals like to have a place they can go that has amazing atmosphere and is not filled with Japanese tourists or people who read things like Trip Advisor reviews and then I will not be able to go there without reservation. The food is great.. atmosphere is created by indirect lighting through bamboo creating an elegant zen space. Service is bilingual, the shabushabu is clean and no MSG in the broth, I love ordering a bunch of stuff Izakaya style, the beer is cold. The communal table is beautiful and this a great space mama-san has created... a favorite of local celebrities and tourists in the know.

“Fresh fish, delicious chankonabe”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

This small restaurant on King Street behind the University is a real treat. Two orders of chankonabe were enough to feed six hungry people. There was plenty of seafood in this stew dish, including shrimp, crab, mushrooms, abalone, napa cabbage, salmon, pork balls, beef and a flavorful broth. It comes with either a rice porridge or udon noodles. The chanko nabe is cooked on a small burner at your table. The charming waitress layered the ingredients skillfully into the boiling broth and no other labor was necessary as the items cooked slowly, blending into the broth for a delicious stew. Two of our group ordered salmon chazuke, also delicious. We also ordered a sashimi platter filled with the freshest ahi, sake (salmon), hamachi, and saba. The seafood dynamite (cooked shellfish in a mayonnaise sauce) was also very satisfying! Try the flounder (hirame) thinly sliced. . . Reservations are required; parking very difficult--we parked in a lot across the way at the corner of King and University (payment required, no validation). For the quality and quantity of food, a very excellent value! The chanko nabe was $20 per order with one order more than enough to feed two people.
