When finding ourselves in the Ala Moana area, my husband and I quickly referred to our Frommer's Hawaii guidebook for an inexpensive lunch option. We were enticed by the description of Kaka'ako Kitchen's gourmet plate lunches and were not disappointed. The menu has a wide range of options including tempura catfish, five-spice shoyu chicken, beef stew, kalua pork sandwich, loco moco, etc. all for around $10-12 a plate. After placing our order, we enjoyed the outdoor seating area while waiting for our food that was served on styrofoam plates. We ended up eating here twice on our trip due to the great value and variety of the menu. Everything we ordered was delicious!

While I often shudder at $8.00 for a breakfast, my local breakfast: two eggs, portuguese sausage, and two scoops brown rice (Ok, I know, right...but it should balance the cholesterol), and a large cup of ground on demand coffee (one refill free) was a pretty good deal for Honolulu. To top it all off, they were open at 8AM on a Sunday, which for their location was a treat. Not to mention the staff, very happy to serve us and relatively quick. With the breeze, sitting outside was much better choice than sitting inside with the heat of the kitchen. A nice way to start the day.

Talk about large portions, one plate lunch is enough for two...but then you wouldn't get to try all the delicious flavors! We had ribs, pork, chicken and beef stew, which were all very tasty. This was a great lunch, but each meal is enough for two.

Tofu Burger with soft moist taro bun and Ahi fish with wasabi sauce mixed plate. Comes with fries, white or brown rice, and traditional macaroni salad. So good!
