The darn thing sits right on the water (there were even a couple of boats "parked" right next to our table). We had our burger cooked to order, and none of this 'we only cook hamburgers well done' stuff we kept getting in other places. It was a light eating day for us so we split their double cheeseburger with curly fries. The waitress was superb! She even split the order in two baskets with the corresponding fries in each. The burgers appeared to be charbroiled and very tasty and, best of all, cooked exactly as ordered. There is big mix of people coming to this place which rocks in the late evening/night hours. We wimped out and went in the mid afternoon, and had a relaxing hour or so sipping on beers and mai-tais looking onto the bay right over the railing.

I'm embarassed to admit that I'm a regular to the Shack. It's one of two Sports Bars/Pubs in Hawaii Kai. Lots of locals, lots of regulars; pool tables and lots of flat screens. The food, shall we say, is bar food, mostly fried. The burgers are OK, try the Original Shack Burger - a hamburger with a Louisiana Hot Link on top of it <go figure> or the Swiss and 'Shroom burger. Fries are extra - so if you want fries, order a basket to share. Onion Rings, Poppers, Wings, a few nightly specials. Nothing fancy. The service is decent and the ambiance is very good. Nice waterfront "dining" if you can consider it dining. It's a sports bar and a very good one. But don't go in there anticipating fine dining.

On a trip to the eastern side of the island, we searched around Hawaii Kai for someplace to eat lunch that wasn't a national chain like McDs or Outback Steakhouse. We found "the Shack" in my GPS navigation system, and the menu looked to have a lot of variety, so we decided to try it out. BIG mistake.

Although the restaurant was half empty and by no means busy, the service we received was extremely slow and inattentive. We almost gave up and walked out, and we were discussing where else we should go to eat when the waitress showed up at the last minute to take our orders. Then it took what seemed like an eternity for the food to come. The food was very greasy and not very good, and certainly not worth the amount of time we waited for it. It wasn't the cleanest place either. The tables were sticky and there were bits of trash on the floor. I've been to truckstop restrooms on the mainland that were cleaner than the restrooms here. I don't know if my stomach felt nauseous more from the greasy food or from having to set foot in the disgusting restroom. We won't be going back to this place.

I moved to the Hawaii Kai area from the mainland last year and was pleasantly surprised to find this excellent sports bar/restaurant right in my own backyard. The setting is varied, from your "dive bar" feel in the front, to nice tables on the patio overlooking the marina. There's a game/arcade area with 2 pool tables and dart boards in back. Tons of flat screen TV's are hung throughout the entire place. There is always something to watch between the Satellite and surf DVDS at night. The food is "very good" bar food. Standard burgers, sandwiches, but the fresh fish is truly a hidden gem. The Shack Hawaii Kai has its own charter boat, and the fish you eat likely was caught a day earlier. Prices are great for Hawaii. Recommended food choices: Fresh Fish sandwich, steak and cheese, potato skins, hot wings and the best yet the Breakfast Burrito. The Shack Hawaii Kai opens at 7am during football season and has a great breakfast menu along with $3 bloody mary's and screwdrivers. It gets pretty crowded on Sunday during football season so be warned, also quite loud, which makes it all the more fun. Service is excellent and Brendan the manager/owner really knows what he is doing. Great food, atmosphere and service, plus all the sports you can't find anywhere else in Hawaii...the Shack Hawaii Kai is really one of the best "bars" (more a rest. with a bar) in all the Islands.
