Elegant afternoon tea with Diamond Head and the Pacific Ocean as background. Simply fabulous! My wife and I try to have afternoon tea whenever we travel. We have had some really nice teas, but the tea at the Halekulani is definitely one of the best! Not only is the setting beyond belief, the service is excellent and the food was very good.

Spent our Bday breakfast here and it was great! The environment and atmosphere is unique! This is a place where you take your time to sit down and have a wonderful meal.

Apparently one wants to have Sunday brunch at Orchids when in Honolulu, but they were booked when we were there, so we made do with dinner. This restaurant really impressed my in-laws, who termed it "the very definition of swank." And indeed it is in a resort hotel and feels very upscale, but not snooty. We were there after sunset, but had a very nice table outside, with good drinks and fresh seafood. The coconut cake was excellent. This was a nice end to a lovely vacation.

Of course the Halekulani Hotel is gorgeous and well designed for Christmas. We enjoyed the sights, including the sunset. Orchids, however, is quite pretentious and overrated. We have three children and were prepared to have a semi-elegant meal. We packed their slacks and dress shoes per the dress code, despite needing only very casual clothes while vacationing in Oahu. The waiter obviously saw our boys (10 and under), yet refused to offer the kids' menu that I knew they had. We cook very creative meals at home, so they are use to all types of cuisine, but why would we order $29 pasta for our 5 year old when you have a menu specialized for his age range and appetite. When I was assertive with the waiter, he groaned and reluctantly gave them a kids' menu. Was that so hard? I'll assume the bigger the bill...the bigger the tip. The food was mediocre. Had much better meals elsewhere on the island.
