The waitress warned us that the service would be slow, but we waited 90 minutes for 2 orders of pasta. No pasta is worth 90 minutes. The entire restaurant experience was so infuriating, so vexing. There is no logical reason for anyone to endure this restaurant. Remember, you've been warned!

I'll make this brief: if you want to enjoy the best Italian food in Honolulu, this restaurant has to be ranked number one. But be prepared to wait for your food for longer than it takes to eat it. That's because the chef appears to be a one-man-band in the kitchen and his lovely partner takes care of the service. Superb food, worth the wait for us, but I suspect most diners would begin to blow a gasket after the lengthy waits between courses. If they ever get some help in the kitchen: it will be a five star experience.

By far, excellent food. No question. As many reviews say, the service is SO SLOW. It's because they have only one server for the entire restaurant. If you are enjoying a bottle or two of wine with friends, the time will go by faster. I had the cioppino. Delicious. A touch of spice, but not overly so as in other restaurants. The salads and appetizers were delicious too. The server is very polite, and doing the best that she can given the situation. If you are in a hurry, eat somewhere else. Assagio's? They manage only 1 seating a night per table, as all of us were in by 6 and most groups were leaving from 8 to 8:30 at night. Don't even try coming without reservations.

I can enthusiastically add this resto to the shortlist of best Italian in Honolulu. La Cucina Ristorante joins Taormina as my personal favorites in a town abundant in Italian eateries.
I read the TA reviews, the last ones were not kind and, more or less, of the pet peeve category. There are two people who run the show: Chef Don who does magic in the back and his lovely wife Dara who deftly manages the front. Despite the extra hoops to snag a reservation, Chef Don answers his email requests promptly and even adds parking instructions (parking is free in the building with validation).
By 6:30 on a weekday night the place was full. We saw about 7 tables and 5 seats at the counter--it is very tiny but oozes a subtle elegance. Good luck to the walk-ins. We surmised that this is definitely a "reservations only" (for now) kind of resto.
As discussed, the quality, quantity, and flavors standout. I found the service, given that we were entertained by our fellow guests, to be about right. Dara clearly knew what is going on. We were comped with a huge bowl of luxe salad. Everything was done right. The prices are so reasonable too. The short wine list is very Euro-centric and allows for "by the glass."
We asked Chef Don to come out of the kitchen for a minute or so. He is a good-looking, young, and engaging man who is comfortable doing his thing and doing it well.
