Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

“Great views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

You can get some nice photos here and see some whales right off the shore. The only drawback is they have the trail to the lighthouse gated off so you can not go all the way to the lighthouse.

“Easy hike, great view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

Tip: the Light house hike is not the same as the Makapuu lookout point. If you hit the Lookout, you have gone to far, turn around and take the immediate left onto the road for the trailhead. You can climb over the hill to the lighthouse from the lookout point, but the trail is narrowed, unmarked, and probably not entirely legal. I did it by accident and hiked the paved trail back to my car. People have been leaving keepsake locks on the fence at the top of the hike, consider bringing an engraved one to leave with you and your sweetie's names :)

“Go early!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

Parking is limited and it gets HOT later in the day, so go early! The road is paved, if steep, and not very long to get to some of the best views of the Waimanalo end of Windward Oahu. During the winter, watch for humpback whales breaching off shore. At any time of the year, scan the water to see red-footed boobies skimming just above the surface (bright white birds usually flying in pairs or small groups). The lighthouse can easily be seen (and photographed) from the top. Make sure to bring some water and don't wear slippahs!

“Great Scenic view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

Paved walkway with scenic views. Lighthouse closed off so you can only see it in the distance. Go early to avoid the heat of the day since there is really no shade. It's not a long hike but the incline can be challenging for those not in great shape.

“Easy hike with exceptional view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

The trail is all paved and although up hill, its relatively easy. This trail is best for sunrise as its facing the east. There are a lot of photo ops as well. The actual lighthouse is blocked off so you can't actually go to it, which was disappointing for me. But the trail takes you to a scenic point on top which makes up for it.
