Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

Great walk with a rewarding view at the end. I recommend you do this in the morning before crowds and heat of the day. Also, make sure you bring some water with you or hydrate real well before.

OK getting up at O dark thirty before the sun goes high, is not my idea of fun, but this hike is so much fun. Looking for whales when in season, chatting with others about the spiders they spied while really really looking, not sure why someone would unless you see them for yourself. They are pretty cool looking albeit not intrusive during your hike. We went outside the lines at the top and it was crazy fun being so high and having such an amazing view. Wish I could do this every weekend. Beautiful, fun and a good exercise.

If you want to see some amazing views this is a must do hike. It's a 2 mile round trip hike, of course it's a winding uphill climb to the top and the path is all paved. Someone wrote that they climbed the path in flip flops, personally I wouldn't advise it unless you are the type that is used to climbing uphill for a mile in them.
You can't go into the lighthouse (disappointed about that) and it is below the actually top of the hill, but you can still get some great photos of the lighthouse looking down at it and also stop to take some photos of it on your way up. Once on top you can see forever especially on a clear day.
I would advise doing this in the morning early, we started the hike at 9:30 and by the time we reached the top it was very hot.
My granddaughter is 4 years old and she made it fine half way up walking but then wanted in the stroller, slower going after that with pushing her in the stroller.

Nice view and easy, but constantly uphill paved path. Easy to do with or without a car (it's about a fifteen minute walk from the Sea Life Park bus stop, but the walk is also with a nice view of the beach and body surfers below). Saw many tourists in bikinis and flip flops doing this. Wouldn't suggest it, but you don't need hiking shoes for it either. The only difficult thing about it is the heat since there is absolutely no shade on the way up. Might want a guide or local to show you how to get down to the water below, since i heard this is the dangerous part where tourists step on the wrong stones and are pulled away with the water; but we didn't leave the path and just went to the lookout.
Also saw a woman in a wheelchair being pushed by her family, so that would be possible too.

Fully paved trail up pasy Makapuu Lighthouse. Little dissapointed that you can't actually get to the lighthouse like I am used too. But it was a nice little hike.
