Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

“Whales!”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

This was an awesome hike! Not too challenging, WAY less crowded than Diamond Head, and it has spectacular whale watching from the trail. We must have seen dozens of whales. There are really beautiful views from most all points of the trail.

“Lighthouse hike”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

This is an easy hike on asphalt. Feb and March are best times of year as you see whales like crazy! If someone in the party can't walk all that far - around the first bend are some stone pillars where they can stop and wait for you.

“Fairly easy hike”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

I visited a friend in February 2013 and we did this relatively easy hike to the top of this trail. Parking is easy and there is no charge for anything. At the top you are looking down at the lighthouse and do not actually go right to the lighthouse.

“Good views from the top”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

The walk was short, elevated along the coast, though veering inland about half the time; it was a slow climb and would be very hot during the middle of the day.

“Beautiful views...”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We loved our "light hike" in March - got to see lots of whales... not much wind on our day, which meant lots of biting insects. They looked like gray ladybugs.
