Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

We has a great time climbing up for the view at Makapuu. The view was great but it was a little windy. Get a map of the island so you do not miss this.

“easy walk with a nice view”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

Very easy paved "trail" which ends at a nice lookout, trail to the lighthouse itself was closed though. Overall the "trail" was very crowded, parking lot was full as well. It is a really short "hike" so it can be easily done when passing by.

Other reviews have mentioned whale watching, we went there in prime whale watching season and I did bring decent binoculars but the only whales to be seen where of the human kind, slowly moving up and down the "trail".

“Wow! A must do!”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Not sure how I missed this one after 5 visits to Oahu. Can be very windy. But great paved trail. Not particularly strenuous. And you can do it in flip flops pushing a stroller. Spectacular ocean and valley view. At some points you can see ocean in 3 diff directions. I would not bring small children unless in stroller.

“Beautiful!!! Bring water”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Got there a little late, around 10 a.m. Had a hard time finding parking so get there early! This is about 1 1/2 miles each way, I think, and it is a workout! Pretty steep in places but there are places to rest along the way. It takes you up the mountain along the water so the view while you are climbing is spectacular. Make sure you have comfortable shoes on and bring water with you. Also, make sure you use a restroom before you get there because there's no place to stop once you are there. The view from the top is amazing. They say you can see whales from there but we weren't lucky enough to. Maybe next time!

“Short Rewarding Hike”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

We arrived in the morning (10 a.m. 2/14) and found half of the parking places available. Perfect Hawaiian morning, cooler temperatures and not many folks going up and standing around at the viewing areas. Large organized tours do not stop here (yea!) Warmer on the leeward side of the trail. Skies clear and across the channel we took photos of Molokai, Lanai and Maui in the distance. Sorry, didn't stand around looking in the distance for breaching whales. This is a short moderate uphill hike on paved path - watch your step as some of the path has deteriorated from lack of maintenance. Beautiful views of Makapu'u Beach Park, Waimanalo, Kailua and Koko Head crater, Saw many mothers with kid strollers and small families going up. Side trail to lighthouse CLOSED due to vandalism prevention and safety of navigation. Up/down side trail to tide pools tough, but walking around to parking lot longer. Bring water, no toilet facilities (available down the hill at Makapu'u beach or Sandy beach parks), Please take your trash with you.
