Great tour. Took bus #2 from the Hilton to the Honolulu museum of Art, where the tour left from there. Enjoyed the native experience.

The entire Shangri La experience was wonderful. Beautiful gardens, my tour guide, Barbara was knowledgeable and had a sense of humor. We could sit during the tour at several turns, which was a surprise and refreshing. The groups were divided into about 15 people, which made the tour more intimate.

It was, also, enlightening to know what people can do with their assets who had no heirs.

The former home of the interesting and very talented heiress, Doris Duke.

Go see it, if you are a culture " buff"

Fabulous mix of antiques, modern furnishings and Hollywood chic are displayed in this beautiful, ocean and cliff-front home.

A wonderful glimpse into Doris' world.

I visted Doris Duke's estate in Newport, Ri and the tour guide mentioned Shangri La. Since then it has been on my bucket list. Before arriving in Honolulu I booked the tour. The tours to
Shangri La are by small groups (@16 people) transported from the Honolulu Museum. One cannot go to Shangri La alone by car. There is no parking at the estate except for the mini busses from the Museum. I would suggest booking at least a week or more a head of time as spaces fill up. There isn't any air conditioning at Shangri La so a morning visit would be best. There are many stairs and different levals so this would not be a good tour for anybody with walking or mobility issues. The style and art at Shangri La is Islamic. The tour guides at the Shangri La were warm, inviting and very knowledgable. We had a great time!

A friend had mentioned that she enjoyed this tour and I trust her taste, so I booked tickets before we left on our trip. We enjoyed the Hawaii Art Museum and the special exhibit on Hawaiian Art Deco advertisements very much before the tour and even had a very nice lunch in the courtyard of the museum. The tour of Shangri-La was a treat. It was beautiful and full of historic artifacts. I would highly recommend the tour.
The only complaint was that it was not long enough. I would have enjoyed wondering around the grounds, but for obvious reasons that wasn't possible.

The art and the architecture make Shangri La a hidden gem and a lovely thing to do in Honolulu. You don't have to have a understanding of Islamic Art to appreciate the beauty and diversity of this collection. The home itself is perched right on the ocean. Make sure to make a reservation and plan to have lunch afterwards at the lovely café at the museum. A perfect alternative to a beach day!
