What a beautiful place! The entrance to this retreat is deceptive in that it is plain and simple. However, once a person enters the foyer, a totally different atmosphere captivates one's attention. Our guide was cordial and well-prepared in informing us of the history of this paradise, the personality of its owner and her treasures. Indeed, a worthwhile attraction to visit for a mature audience.

Shangri La is the former ocean side estate of heiress Doris Duke. Located on 5 acres in the upscale Kahala section of Honolulu, it is a Center for Islamic Art and architecture, displaying Duke's personal collection in a Middle Eastern inspired house. This is our fourth trip to Honolulu and the first time we became aware of this treasure. It can only be visited on guided tours that depart by van from the Honolulu Museum of Art. Tickets are somewhat pricey at $25 for adults ($20 for Hawaii residents). They are available on line and also include admission to the museum itself which is otherwise, $10. Tours last for an hour and a half and are available from Wednesday through Saturday, currently at 9:00 am and 1:30 pm. They seem to sell out ahead of time, so if you think you may want a day of art and culture, plan in advance. If you sign up for the 1:30 tour, and want to combine this with a visit to the museum first, the Honolulu Museum of Art where you board the van to Shangra La also has a restaurant on the premises. (Photos are permitted in the outside areas of the estate, but not indoors).

Well worth a visit to see Islamic and Indian art and architecture and hear about the life of the billionaire heiress. Five acres of Paradise on the Pacific Ocean on the backside of Diamond Head in the exclusive Kahala area of Oahu.

Everything about Hawaii worth doing is outside under the blue skies except this gem of a museum located on the best stretch of Honolulu's shore. The collection of Islamic Art is amazing but even more impressive is the way that Doris Duke incorporated the elements of her passion into her home. Every detail was carefully thought out and planned. The preview of the limited collection at the Honolulu Art Museum is a great introduction. The tickets are limited so you should purchase the tickets in advance of your trip. And if you go, do have lunch at the Honolulu Art Museum and duck into the Museum store.
