“Gem in Honolulu”
Reviewed April 19, 2014

Everything about Hawaii worth doing is outside under the blue skies except this gem of a museum located on the best stretch of Honolulu's shore. The collection of Islamic Art is amazing but even more impressive is the way that Doris Duke incorporated the elements of her passion into her home. Every detail was carefully thought out and planned. The preview of the limited collection at the Honolulu Art Museum is a great introduction. The tickets are limited so you should purchase the tickets in advance of your trip. And if you go, do have lunch at the Honolulu Art Museum and duck into the Museum store.

This place is fantastic for someone that is into an out of the ordinary experience. You start at the Honolulu Academy of Art, there are only a few tours a week. Book early (like weeks early)! You take a shuttle to the estate of Doris Duke. Travel time is provided by the museum and takes about 30 min travel time. Tour is about 2 hours, back to the museum for a fantastic lunch at the museum and on with your day!

“Shangri La”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Loved the Moroccan decor, detail, energy and time invested in interior design of the home. Tobacco money created a beautiful home on the slopes of Diamond that only a lot of money could have created. Enjoyed the history video and items at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. It was a bit stressful to get to the bus on time due to parking and finding the departure point, which is on the side of Academy of Arts. No refunds are made, and reservations are taken weeks in advance. The bus only holds a limited number for each tour. The Playhouse and bedroom were closed during my tour so I'd like to go back to see it again, it's worth it.

“A Glance Into the Life of Doris Duke Cromwell”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Visiting Shangri-La, the home of Doris Duke Cromwell, gives you a glimpse into the life of one of the country's wealthiest women, who also was very private. She fell in love with Hawaii upon visiting here, and decided to settle her, building, over the years, a home that was to become a sort of homage to her love of Middle Eastern art and culture. It is a gorgeous home that has gone through extensive preservation work over the years. I have been here a couple of times and the last two times I was here (last one in 2012), they had not yet finished all of the preservation work so some areas were off limits to the public. I believe those areas are now back open.

Standing on the lawn at the back of the property, looking out to the Pacific Ocean and the gorgeous water, will cause you to take a deep breath and imagine not only what it was like to live in that wealth, but to live in that place, that is other-worldly in many ways.

The tour starts at the Honolulu Museum of Art, and I would go early so as to take more time visiting the gallery that is related to the tour, with Middle Eastern art, as well as a video that is shown. Tour guides/docents are awesome.
