“Beauty on the Beach”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This beautiful place was once the home of Doris Duke, millionaire. She loved to collect artifacts, furniture, and art work from Islamic countries.
What I enjoyed most about this piece of history was hearing the stories of this extraordinary woman and her adventures, how she impacted the history of Hawaii, and how Shangri La place came to be.

“A Masterpiece”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Doris Duke mansion and grounds cannot be missed. Make sure to secure tickets as far in advance as possible on the Honolulu Museum of Art website. The tour will take your breath away. Truly an enchanting place.

“Doris Duke's amazing house”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

I love to get inside of Doris Duke's house whenever I can. She had amazing taste and the money to buy whatever she wanted. It shows. Worth the tour price. Fun and educational.

“Beautiful Palace”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Gorgeous collection of artifacts from around the world. A must see. You need to make advanced reservations though through the Honolulu Academy of Arts and they will take you to the Palace by bus.

“Ranked #3....REALLY?!”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

Travel books and the TA reviews (and ranking) really make this out to be something quite special. So this leads to high expectations. There are so many great activities and sights in Honolulu and the Waikiki area, but I would say this is not one of the highlights.

On top of this, I found customer service to be poor. There was a bit of a snooty, unapproachable attitude with some staff, including at the art museum where you begin (female guide responsible for directing Shangri La customers), and at the Shangri La location with the male tour guide. We were there on Saturday, June 22nd.

Also, I found it a bit ridiculous that you had start and end at the art museum. They should allow you to leave from the tour site, which is close to Diamond Head. This would permit us to have a nice walk to Diamond Head for a hike, or a nice walk to the Waikiki area. Instead, you are bused back to the museum area which is far from any interesting sites.

Yes, Shangri La is nice. I found the outdoor areas to be the most impressive, which is the only time you can take pictures. Inside it is dark, and hot, with stagnant air. Although they do give you free hand-fans to help cool off. The narrative during the tour got a bit boring, like attending a lecture delivered by someone who seems indifferent.
