“Interesting history and architecture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Our tour guide, a doctor who grew up in the local area, was just as interesting as this Doris Duke heritage. The art museum where the tour buses start from is also very worth while to devote a couple of hours.

“You do not have to be an art lover to appreciate this tour.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Wow! So organized and together, this tour is worth the 25$ to go. This includes the art museum, the van ride to Shangrila, a very informative docent and views of the pacific you have probably never seen. The architecture is amazing, from the front door, a story in itself, to the main foyer with the indirect lighting and then it goes on and on, each room a gem. Reserve in advance.
Back at the museum itself there is a gift shop and reasonably priced cafe with an excellent menu.

“Lifestyles of the rich and famous in a stunning home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

Having been to Hawaii 6 times I decided to try new things this trip and this was a really interesting afternoon. Not an art lover (drawing stick figures makes me nervous!) this house still has plenty to offer in great architecture, fascinating stories, a stunning seaside location and a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary woman. Our guide was a great storyteller. Only complaint was that the tour leaders appear to assume you're American and so many cultural references were lost on us until I spoke up. Price seems steep but we agreed it was a great afternoon and good value.

“Lovely location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Know mostly for the collection of Islamic artwork, Doris Duke's home is a true hidden gem. Tours must be booked through the Art Museum and this is also the starting point, where their bus will bring guests to the site for the tour. The house, location, and art are interesting, and this is an out of the ordinary tour worth taking.
