We booked a visit to the Doris Duke estate and it was a highlight of our trip to Honolulu. Exceptional location on the ocean and the Islamic art collection is outstanding. The booking includes full-day entry to the excellent Honolulu Academy of Art, and when you get on the bus in the morning to go to Shangri La the guide will offer to make you a reservation for lunch at the Academy's very popular restaurant.

I had been trying to visit the last couple of times I was in Honolulu, and FINALLY got tickets by calling months in advance and purchasing them. It was well worth the wait and the planning. If you like islamic art and architecture, or just fabulous houses, this small personalized tour is just delightful!

“Shangri-La is aptly named”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

This was a wonderful home designed and built by the heiress, Doris Duke. The tour must be booked well in advance and starts from the Honolulu Academy of the Arts with a short video and then a bus ride to the home itself. The docent was terrific and the house is spectacular and built with many examples of Islamic art, some brought from Middle Eastern countries and others re-created for Ms. Duke by artists from those countries. The gardens and view from the lanai are truly spectacular. Book early and plan to spend some time at the Arts Academy - especially, plan to have lunch in their cafe. It was delightful.

“What money can do!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Unbelievable, this home perched on the edge of the water West of Diamond Head. The glass wall...took the prize for most stunning. There is so much to see, the historical pieces on display are museum quality, and Miss Duke had more moola than any museum.
You must see it for your self. Make reservations early, wear comfortable shoes as there is lots of walking.

“Shhhh! Keep this a secret!”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

Not surprising that this has gone from little known "arty" visit, to now the t4th top attraction in Honolulu. Although it's now been 12 months since our visit, it's a highlight of our Hawaii trip that we often remark on. Okay, so Doris Duke was loaded and her wealth facilitated travel and the purchase of truly remarkable pieces, but Doris had the foresight and creativity to not only pick this wonderful Diamond Head spot, but the building grounds. The house itself is a time snapshot, and the staff are informative and sincere with their information. Islamic art is beautiful and in this idealic setting, and the entry into the Honolulu Academy of the Arts, makes this vit a truly memorable one. Just remember to book very early in advance.
