Owner description: Doris Duke's home, built in 1930, is an architecturally significant home which includes a collection of Islamic artwork.

we had booked a 9am visit on Dec 14th online. as instructed parked our car and waited at the Honolulu art museum watching a short intro movie about Doris Duke the richest girl in the world who had built this holiday home after her honeymoon. a shuttle took us to the seaside home and our docent took us on the tour of the gardens and select rooms in the house --explaining about the islamic architecture in use. though the house is modelled on palace rooms in the islamic world, it has not really achieved the wow factor. it was a pleasant visit though... we were given a free entry to the honolulu art museum after we were dropped off there... that turned out to be a real bonus as we loved the galleries and the courtyards and stayed on for more than 4 hours enjoying all the exhibits

The house was amazing and our guide very knowledgeable and personable. Have read a lot about Doris duke and the house so it was great to see in person. Wish more of the house was open and wish you could take pictures inside. The tour book for $55 was not fantastic, and would like to have had more pictures of the rooms. The bedroom is supposed to open in 2014. Not sure if the playhouse will open in the future. Is costly at $25 for the amount you get to see. Apparently Elton john got to see the playhouse when he went on a private tour...from what our tourguide said. Guess he paid more than $25 lol.

Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, not sure why you can't take pictures in the house with the flash off.

Well worth the reservations and tour from the Honolulu Museum of Art. Doris Duke was a fascinating woman and her home is unique with furnishings and architecture from the Middle East.

It's a very interesting home - available only via guided tour, but the website has a virtual tour that's most helpful in preparing for what there is to see. Different rooms are open depending on what's being conserved. Ocean-side setting is very attractive.
