I enjoyed the tour of Shangri La. It is definately an adult tour of an amazing house. The location is on the water with beautiful views. The interior is very relaxing, peaceful and balanced. Every room has a matching doorway, tiles on each side. It is worth going to especially if you are interested in decorating, desing and architecture. Pay close attention to the glass wall that can be lowered into the basement. This is a piece of technology from the 1920's... amazing. I hope that if the read goes to Shangri La that you receive a similiar peaceful experience.

The visit to Doris Duke's private estate near Diamond Head is interesting and definitely worth the time. Groups are limited and
reservations have to be made in advance, so it's absolutely necessary to take care of this at the Honolulu Art Museum in advance. If you are a resident or a member of the museum there is a slight discount. The tour begins at the museum from which you are picked up and driven to ShangriLa where you are greeted by your guide and escorted through the building and parts of the gardens. Sections of the site and rooms in the house are closed to the public which is rather unfortunate, but there is enough available for viewing to make the trip rewarding.

It's kind of weird to build a house on Hawaii and fill it entirely with Islamic Art. But Doris Duke certainly had a feeling for art and decoration. The house is small for her standards, but the high ceilings and the beautiful decoration make it very luxury. Outside you can retreat in the quiet gardens or watch the powerful waves pounding on the shore, all with a view on Diamond Head from the side opposite of Waikiki. Our guide Carol knew a lot about the property, Islamic Art and the life of the wealthy lady who made her island retreat into a museum and opened it for visitors after she passed away without heir. Reservations pass through the Honolulu Museum of Art which is also the starting point for the tour.

Doris Duke had the money and good taste to build an elegant home/museum under the view of Diamond Head on Oahu. Tours of this waterfront treasure are given by volunteers--our guide Stacy had superb knowledge of Shangri La--and our time in this peaceful place went all too quickly.

A magical house which is part of Honolulu's history and present art scene. Shangri La is a large oasis located on the coast which boasts beautiful Islamic Art unique to certain areas of the world.
