“Amazing Beachfront Hideaway”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Doris Duke had the money and good taste to build an elegant home/museum under the view of Diamond Head on Oahu. Tours of this waterfront treasure are given by volunteers--our guide Stacy had superb knowledge of Shangri La--and our time in this peaceful place went all too quickly.

“Amazing Adventure in Paradise!”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

I’m fascinated by homes of the wealthy that have been opened to the public. Doris Duke’s Shangri La amazing and one of the best experiences I had during my trip to Hawaii. The Islamic art and the view are incredible. I was impressed with the design and technology that Doris Duke invented for her hideaway. I could move into this house today and be comfortable, so if they are looking for anyone to housesit, I’m available. The tour I took didn’t include the guest house, the bedrooms, kitchen or bathrooms which I would like to have seen but I still really loved the tour. Without a doubt, Doris Duke was a visionary and her money is still being used to support the arts in her beloved paradise. The tours are small and limited, so book early. Also, bags aren’t allowed on the tour but they can be stored at the Honolulu Art Museum where the tour starts.

A magical house which is part of Honolulu's history and present art scene. Shangri La is a large oasis located on the coast which boasts beautiful Islamic Art unique to certain areas of the world.

“Truly Shangri La”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Loved everything. Worth the money and time. Make reservations well in advance. Beautiful place and decor This is NOT a tour for children - they would not appreciate the beauty or history of the place. Great tour guide that will share Doris Duke's history and lifestyle. Highly recommend.

“Doris Duke Knew How to Live!”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

This is a great tour for those interested in historic homes and/or seeing how the 1% lived! Organized by the Honolulu Academy of the Arts, there is a time commitment since the shuttle departs and returns to the Academy in keeping with their agreement with the neighborhood association. Her collection of Islamic art is beautiful and the setting and environment are serene and, especially for the time, ultra luxurious. A real find for Honolulu visitors.
