Owner description: Doris Duke's home, built in 1930, is an architecturally significant home which includes a collection of Islamic artwork.

Doris Duke built this estate at the foot of Diamond Head. The front of the estate is very unassuming and plain. However, once the door is open you walk into another world of exquisite Islamic art, beautiful gardens and unbelievable ocean views.

Doris Duke's Shangri La home/grounds tour was superbly presented by their staff. Our guide was very knowledgeable and willing to answer extra questions. The foundation has done a wonderful job of preserving this old home from deterioration while allowing visitors to view many parts of this home. Restoration efforts continue with future additions of the Damascus Room and Ms. Duke's private bredroom coming in the next year(s). The view of the ocean and surrounding beach is fantastic, but there is little opportunity to wander on your own, since there are so many visitors who wish to see this magnificent place. Visitors must check in at the Hawaii Museum of Art and are shuttled to the home. Coordination between the Museum and Shangri La is excellent and the Museum should not be missed. There are lovely asian, pacific and contemporary pieces to view and a lovely but pricey restaurant upon your return from viewing Shangri La. Call in advance to get tickets/reservations--it is very busy and popular.

What an amazing time we had here at Shangri La! I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves history, art, or architect. Here are few tips:
1.) Book your tour with the Museum a few months before you go. Thus, you can get to choose a better time for yourself. They are really pleasant at the Museum. Very helpful.. Oh, you meet at the Museum, then, they trasnport you to the actually home. A quick 10 to 12 minute ride on a small bus to the place.
2.) Go to an early tour. It gets very hot in Oahu in the afternoon and even the guide mentioned how hot the tours get in the afternoon. The place doesn't have A/C. No Bathrooms either. Go at the Museum before you get on the bus.
3.) If you are disabled, call the Museum for the tour does an amazing job assisting individuals with limited disabilities. My husband and I were pleased with the care and attention they provided to this individual that needed assistance. Well done!
4.) When on this two hour tour, don't hesitate to ask questions. The guides welcome them and encourages it, too.
5.) The tour does have a cost to it, however, well worth it. Your tour also includes admission into the museum.
6.) I don't feel the tour is suitable for children.
7.) Go to the Cafe they have for lunch either after or before your tour. Excellent food and wonderful service. Highly recommend.
We could not have been more pleased with the tour. Again, I would highly recommend this tour.

Some friends had recommended this tour to me, and I'm glad I finally decided to check this out. The tours are in small groups, giving them a very personal and intimate quality. The guides are extremely informative, providing the history of the estate and details about the wonderful architecture. The grounds are breathtaking as well. Definitely worth a visit.
