“Intimate and interesting tour”
Reviewed May 26, 2012

Some friends had recommended this tour to me, and I'm glad I finally decided to check this out. The tours are in small groups, giving them a very personal and intimate quality. The guides are extremely informative, providing the history of the estate and details about the wonderful architecture. The grounds are breathtaking as well. Definitely worth a visit.

I wasn't sure if I would like the tour but it was worth the visit. It is amazing how she incorporated all that art into her home. Even the walls are art pieces. The tour is very relaxing and informative. It is simply amazing the features that were included when the house was built. We also spend time before the tour going through the Honolulu Academy of Art, since it was included in the ticket price. If you have the time it is worth the visit.

“Extraordinary and Amazing”
Reviewed May 15, 2012

This gem of a home is a must-see if you have the time and can plan ahead a bit. The house is incredibly beautiful and the views are spectacular. The home is affiliated with the Honolulu Museum of Art (also a great place to visit- I had never been therefore before).

Your tour starts downtown at the Honolulu Museum of Art. After a short video and the chance to look at some objects at the museum from Doris Duke's home, you board a small bus for the 20 minute drive to Shangri-La. The group is split into two and wonderful docents then lead you on a guided tour of the home and grounds. Rooms in the house are still being renovated and opened to the public so if you haven't been in years it may also be time to go again.

I went with my partner and my mom (who is from Hawaii and had never been). We all agreed that it was one of the highlights of our visit.

After the tour, we went to the cafe at the museum and the food was wonderful! Definitely take them up on reservations for the cafe before leaving in the a.m. for the house!

“An Amazing Place!”

Shangri La is an absolute jewel. I recommend visitors to Honolulu skip all the touristy stuff, visit the Museum of Fine Arts and take this tour. Not only is the house fascinating, the garden with its fantastic view is wonderful. We booked the tour over the phone in advance of our visit. It was the definite highlight of Honolulu.
